Take Action to Stop the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement!

*PLEASE POST AND FORWARD WIDELY*

New: Send a Message to Mark Latham to say "Stop the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement"

The Australian Government has signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the USA that undermines fundamental social, cultural, environmental and democratic protections which we all enjoy.

It gives US corporations new rights to challenge our laws, and unprecedented influence on everything from how much we pay for medicines to our quarantine regulations.

But YOU can take action to help stop this agreement coming into force. Ask the Labor Party (ALP) to block legislation which is needed to bring the FTA into effect. If the ALP joins the minor parties in opposing this legislation in the Senate, the agreement will fail. Send a message to the ALP Leader Mark Latham NOW at http://www.nofta.org

How will the US-Australia FTA affect Australians? An FTA would be:

* Bad for the Cost of Medicines - The FTA will increase the cost of Australian medicines by up to $1.5 billion. Prof. David Henry, former Chair of the Government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee says "Every single provision in the text of the agreement as it applies to drugs is to favour the US companies, to increase the prices, to ultimately reduce access to cheap, affordable drugs in Australia. There's no question about it."

* Bad for Australian Farmers - The FTA will not fix the biggest problem for Australian farmers - low commodity prices - while at the same time flooding Australia with new imported US foods. Changes to Australian quarantine rules which aim to reduce important quarantine barriers also threaten farmers' livelihoods.

* Bad for Australian Workers - The FTA threatens tens of thousands of Australian manufacturing jobs. The US government brags that the FTA will increase Australian imports of US manufactures by US$2 billion.

* Bad for Australia's Environment - The FTA will undermine Australia's existing environmental laws and fetter Australian governments seeking to legislate to protect the environment. The government has never even bothered to formally assess the FTA's impact on Australia's environment.

* Bad for Australian Culture and Creative Industries - Under the FTA, the government has surrendered the right to ensure Australian content in all new media. Future Australian governments will never be able to increase the amount of Australian content on existing media. As well, the government has agreed to changes in Australia's intellectual property laws which will stifle creativity in areas from software development to music.

* Bad for Public Services - The FTA gives US companies a right to "market access" to bid for many public services currently supplied by the government. It will also make it difficult for the government to regulate the operation of some corporations and will make it almost impossible for any future Australian government to run public services currently supplied by private companies.

* Bad for Australia's Economy - While the government has used highly debatable models to predict an economic windfall from the FTA, a number of studies have found that the FTA will have a negative economic impact on Australia. Modelling by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows that a FTA with America would actually shrink the Australian economy by 0.03% per year.

Support a fair trading system which serves social, cultural and environmental objectives, not one which sacrifices them for highly questionable economic gains. Ask the ALP to block FTA legislation in the Senate.

Channel Nine Judge finds Saleh Jamal Guilty?

Why would a man carry out a shooting attack on a police station in Sydney's south-western suburbs? Because police wouldn't give him a licence? Because police owed him money?

Such an important question could easily be overlooked especially if he escaped to Lebanon before a public inquiry in NSW.

Now the man is allegedly linked as reported by Ch/9s new Judge, 'Who's Who', to international terrorism, [in other words another scapegoat for the Coalition of the Killing's resource war's in the Middle East], and the politics of fear-mongering.

Perhaps we won't get to the bottom of the NSW allegations of Shooting at a Police Station.

Perhaps the most important question for the citizens who reside in this state could be overlooked by Bob Carr and Police Minister John Watkins, now the alleged offender has escaped from his bail obligations.

Perhaps our honest police could be more forthcoming giving us a reasonable explanation for the alleged shooting?

CH/Nine: Two Australians are reportedly due to face a military court [?] in Lebanon charged with, [alleged], offences which include raising money in Australia for, [alleged], terrorism in the Middle East.

Channel Nine reported that Saleh Jamal has confessed to funding terrorist acts in the Middle East using finances recruited in Australia. So who's who at Nine? When did the Nine networks take over national and international public prosecutions? Or is this what a military Judge told them?

So if I said shit was blue then Ch/Nine would also report that shit was blue if of course it suited them to report the same.

The question is do they have an interest to report the politics of fear for the Howard Government? And sadly the answer to that question is yes!

Allegedly, Jamal left Australia on a false passport while on bail for charges relating to a shooting attack on a police station in Sydney's south-western suburbs.

Shooting attack for what? Did the police owe money for drugs? Or was he disgruntled about the service?

The report says Jamal has also named members of a Lebanese-based Al Qaeda group, [? a fictional USA demon], travelled between known terror units, [? keywords: terror units, cells, plots, links, jihad, training camps etc...], and has, [allegedly], confessed to assisting in a recent bombing in Syria. [?] Says Channel Nine's newly appointed Judge, 'Who's Who?'

A second Australian man, 28-year-old Haytham Milhem, is also said, [? alleged], to be facing the military court. [a what? A military court? What's that?.]

Judge 'Who's Who' failed to get Haytham to give himself up but the two men can be held in custody for up to six months and that should be enough to get Mr Milhem talking.

Meanwhile, New South Wales Premier Bob Carr says the Federal Government is entirely to blame for Jamal fleeing Australia while on bail. Carr has faced questions in Parliament about how the man got bail.

Jamal was granted bail by a Sydney court back in 2001 despite the judge stating that the firearms charges he faced amounted to "urban terrorism". Key word: "Terrorism". Politically correct in the politics of fear perpetrated by our man, [war criminal], Phillip Ruddock.

But what about urban police corruption? Shooting attack for what? Did the police owe money for drugs? Or was he disgruntled about the service?

Why would a person launch a shooting attack on a police station in Sydney's south-western suburbs? Perhaps police didn't pay him his drug money? More interesting than the alleged terrorism charges in Lebanon wouldn't you think?

More than likely it was in the police best interests to help him get away and therefore no reasonable inquiry into the shooting would follow.

Or perhaps with or without this man being in custody in Australia we can still make those inquiries to find out why this man decided to shoot at the police station? Do the police have any ideas they would like to share with the community? Not likely!

The judge said it would take years for the case to go to trial because of legal complications and he should be granted bail with strict conditions.

But facing questions about the fact Jamal got bail, Bob Carr said the only reason the man fled the country was because of a lapse in border protection. [Just plain rubbish and propaganda.]

Carr: "You don't try to make a political issue out of this when the Federal Government is entirely to blame for him leaving Australia," he said.

A political issue it is both for Ch/Nine and the Federal Government who want to win an election. Bob you could have seen it coming. Any alleged terrorist is a gold mine for Howard and he will promote this as he has done time and time again using corporate media propaganda cells like Ch/9.

Rest assured Ruddock will have a direct line to CH 9's Judge 'Who's Who' and the other judge in the Military Court, [?] in Lebanon to insure the propaganda suits the current climate here in Australia.

The trial in Lebanon of a Sydney man facing terrorism charges in a military court has been adjourned. Saleh Jamal appeared in a military court in Beirut and requested a lawyer to represent him, prompting the 48 hour postponement.

Australian consular officials are assisting him and another Australian being held as terror suspects. [Scapegoats for the Coalition of the Killing's resource war's in the Middle East.]

[War criminal], attorney General Philip Ruddock will not comment on claims Saleh Jamal and Haytham Milhem have been charged with offences which include, [allegedly], raising money in Australia for Middle East terrorism, because Ch/9 and Judge Who's Who can adequately do that for him. Ruddock has told ABC program Lateline there is little he can say about the case. [but promote it?]

Ruddock: "We are aware they have been detained, we are aware that there were claims they were both Australians," he said. "We've undertaken consular examinations with them to obtain details of their documentation and our obligations in relation to them." Ruddock wants New South Wales to change its bail laws after one of the men used a false passport to flee Australia.

Good excuse anyway changing the bail laws again, not that it will affect the rest of the citizens who happen to reside in NSW? All this because of an alleged failure by the Federal Government or the NSW police service? Ruddock told the ABC that law changes might have stopped Jamal getting bail in the first place. [As well as everyone else?]

"The law in New South Wales has a presumption that people ought to be released on bail," he said.

[a presumption of innocence?]

"Where serious criminal offences are involved and where security, "terrorism" issues are involved, it seems to me the presumption ought to be in the reverse. [guilty]

"I understand New South Wales is looking at that."

[As I understand it, if Saleh Jamal was shooting at a police station in Lakemba then the police should come clean about the reasons why? Was it because the police owed him money? Was it because he was disgruntled about the police service? Did he have the green light to sell drugs for police? Did that go wrong? Did Jamal carry on as if he was above the law? What gave him that notion? Did police let him escape, because it was in their interests to let him go?]

The Bracks Government is expected to announce new powers of investigation for the Victorian Ombudsman today. So what are they trying to say? The dog never had the power?

Bulldogs simply not the best!
SIMPLY NOT THE BEST AND DEFINITELY NOT BETTER THAN ANYONE, ANYONE I'VE MET.

Why the Bulldogs rape case failed?
AFTER two months of turmoil, the rape case against six Bulldogs rugby league players has collapsed, with police saying there was insufficient evidence to press charges. IT is the moment any investigator dreads. [Just plain rubbish and a cover-up.]

NSW Police seizing assets to bolster budgets?
Seized assets to bolster police budgets is going to place crime solving into the corporate arena. Why should they go after a common criminal who is poor? Instead they'll be searching for assets and then solving crime. After all, police budgets will depend on it.

Court accuses police of planting evidence

NSW ex-Inspector Gadget claims credibility again
Just how credible is this former cop? Small's claim on Four Corners [Walls, a government propaganda machine], tonight, [that], the Government warned about Redfern problems before the riot. Man wrongly imprisoned awarded $1m
A Sydney man who was acquitted of murder has won more than $1 million in damages for wrongful arrest and imprisonment. The New South Wales Supreme Court has agreed with Garry Raymond Nye's said that the charge was maliciously laid. Acting on a tip-off, [?], police arrested and charged the 51-year-old with the shooting murder of Roy Thurgar at Randwick in Sydney's east in 1991. He spent 16 months in custody before he was acquitted by a jury.

Jailed man's conviction to be reviewed
The New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal will today review the conviction of a man, after claims in the Police Integrity Commission (PIC) last year that police planted weapons and faked suspects' confessions.

Who is bad?
Super Rat? M5? M11? K8? N2? So I trust that some people who, with the photos and guns guessed that a jury would quickly establish a case against a profiled person whom, you just had a picture and a history of. Common knowledge? The government knew their victims would take the blame. Not just chess in court, 'moving around the pieces', but 'putting false evidence, or not enough evidence before the jury."

2,500, crooked detectives? Or a corrupt Government?
The Wood Royal Commission into police corruption. Where did the police learn their trade skills? Led by example perhaps?

How to become corruption resistant in NSW
Don't trust those who cannot prove themselves with the little amounts of trust you give them. Just because they have a letter of perceived trust doesn't mean they can be trusted.

This is not how you eat 'antisocial behaviour'
Process corruption, perjury, planting of evidence, verbals, fabricated confessions, denial of suspects rights, a solicitor to induce confessions, tampering with electronic recording equipment, framing. Generally green lighting crime, and I say Murder, including the kids who overdosed on heroin. No doubt.

Black Knight - Long way to go home
In line with the current climate of police corruption and the demise of the reform unit set up by Wood, these facts ought to have been a good reason to leave Moroney out of the package as Commissioner.

Bob down and sniff my arse
These are serious invasions of privacy and draconian laws? Where are our democratic soldiers, the lawyers and the barristers who need to take on the government in the courts? Are they plastic? Or to busy feathering their nests? Or have they been cleverly purchased by this black government. Drug test police and politicians, and have the tests independently accessed.

Come in spinner? Or Come in sinner?
"You don't have, in my view very vigilant processes. I suppose it's akin to the problem of corruption within the police," he told the ABC radio. " People say there's corruption with the police (but) do you get the police to investigate problems within their own ranks?

Deeds
I am disturbed by Governments 'actions' in relation to shuffling the police service. Clive Small seconded into Parliament like a cocky in a perch. A breach of the fundamental Separation of Powers Doctrine does not in my view allow the thought of intervening, planning, or shuffling to stack the deck of our police service. The one that suppose to be autonomous according to Lord Denning. Where the Parliamentary Secretary can ask the commissioner of police to 'report' then sack him if he is not satisfied with such report.

Truth
Who is telling the truth? Well I guess Dr. Ed. Chadbourne or Mr. Peter Ryan may have the answer to that. Dr. Chadbourne sacked by Peter Ryan and more specifically in my view because he elected deputy commissioners Dave Madden and Andrew Scipione as the best men in the service in relation to his qualifications to make a recommendation in his capacity as human resources. That is if you believe that a Dr. can be corrupted.

Honesty
What is happening between the Police Service and politics is quite extraordinary at the moment. If stand over tactics don't work tell half the truth honestly and follow the example of sheep. Another word for it is sleaze, yeah. Another word for it is workplace harassment. Another word for it is bribing a Police Officer. Another word for it is misleading Parliament.

Tele Tales
Most people I know don't buy the Daily Telegraph. Why? Because of the lies and propaganda purported by them.

Lord Denning
Interesting how a member of the Police Board Mr. Tim Priest would hold grave fears for his safety from dangerous senior police but fails to name them or have them sacked. Rather Priest resigns as if he had no powers. Could that mean what he was saying is that the Governments are also corrupt?

Corrosive
Clive Small is Bob Carr's choice for the new Police Commissioner. It could only be the case considering his, Small's special appointment into Parliament House. Small who suffers from the little person syndrome is the ideal bend over boy who gets shuffled through his corrupt actions. Rolling the legal system for him after the fact, just like his predecessor Roger the dodger Rogerson.

Black Nexus
The Separation of Powers Doctrine is nowcontaminated witharangeofcolours, now leaving us with a black shirt on a once blue bridge that crossed that thin blue line. The 'Amery and Woodham show'.

Same boat
The Premier, Bob Carr, relies on a militia. A gang of bikies and our Police Service, to show all of us he is no murderer. He should be taken to the task along with his partners in crime like Clive Small to account for those people who like my self have been maliciously assaulted and who have complained, without any service and those who cannot speak for themselves who were murdered, like Terry Falconer. Terry murdered in custody.

Good Cop
Why have our democratic institutions broken down? It's not just the criminal justice system. The Anti-Corruption Network webmaster@anti-corruption-network.org exposes the same issues. A group of white-collar workers who say they have suffered as follows:

Dangerous
I refer to the Daily Telegraph article 22 March 2002 under the heading Priest quits advisory job.

Partners in crime - history!
Roger Rogerson, the old hero, who never faced a result in the Lanfranchi, or Huckstepp murders, was let off in my opinion when the New South Wales Government rolled the legal system (deciding what evidence to give the police prosecutor) to have the jury believe the illusion they (the Government wanted to create).Similarly, Peter Ryan facing the Police Integrity Commission for questions about his involvement in the demise of the dysfunctional reform unit. Chess in the court (rolling the legal system).

I was misled on abuse: Howard?

[War criminal], Prime Minister John Howard says he did not mislead the public about when Australian officials became aware of allegations about the serious abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

The Defence, [War], Department has revealed that its officials first learnt of the allegations last October.

Last Friday, the department said that none of the 300 soldiers, [militants], and civilians who may have had contact with prisoners knew about claims of serious mistreatment until the issue became public in April.

But defence, [war], secretary Ric Smith on Tuesday told a Senate committee that he was wrong.

He says the department has now learnt of Red Cross working papers that were in the possession of Major George O'Kane and a defence official in Canberra earlier.

"We do acknowledge that the allegations they describe were allegations of mistreatment, serious by any standard," Mr Smith said.

The head of the Defence Department and the chief of the Australian Defence Force have apologised to the Government for any embarrassment caused by the revelations the defence officials first learnt of the allegations last October.

Howard says he has not mislead the Australian public and says he is very unhappy that he was given the wrong advice.

"I am very unhappy that I was misinformed by the Defence Department; so is the Defence Minister," he said.

"We're dealing here with what was clearly an inadequate briefing, not only of me.

"But bear in mind that the chief of the Defence, [War], Force and the secretary of the Defence, [War], Department were equally poorly served by the advice they received by the department."

Howard says he did not know about the abuse claims until April.

"I would have done the right thing," he said. "If I'd known about it I would've expressed my concern, of course I would."

Howard says all his statements have been based on advice from the Department of Defence, [War.]

He says he has asked, [war criminal], Defence, [War], Minister Robert Hill to give the Senate a full briefing on the matter.

USA: On Solitary Confinement

There has been much written about solitary confinement by some of the world's leading psychiatrists, but very little written by victims of solitary themselves. I believe that the 32 years I have spent in solitary qualifies me for the task.

On April 17th, 1972, Brent Miller, a security guard here at Angola was murdered. His death had a radical impact on every prisoner at Angola, regardless of their housing assignment.

Men all over the prison, who held any form [of] 'militant' view were all placed in administrative segregation. Albert Woodfox and I were part of the 'round-up' on April 17th, 1972 and shortly thereafter were joined by Robert Hillary King (aka Robert Wilkerson).

We were placed in the cells called Closed Cell Restriction (CCR) pending investigation. These were the same cells occupied by death row inmates. We were held in the same conditions, but under a different status.

Administrative segregation is a room, cell or cage set off from the rest of the prison population. In most prisons, as here in Angola, it is the dungeon. Men who have been cited for rule violations are sent to the dungeon.

Those who have been sentenced to the dungeon are not allowed to have dessert on their food trays. However, men who occupy these same cells pending investigation while waiting to go to disciplinary court, these men are given dessert and as foolish as it sounds, it surreptitiously changes the status of one prisoner from that of the other as they live in cells adjoining each other.

In November 1972 a "Cell Block Review Board" was created to review the status of prisoners so that they could either be released or maintained in Administrative Segregation. Men like Albert, Robert and myself -- because of our political views -- have been maintained in Administrative Segregation. Because of the duration of our stay, the name of our status was changed from Administrative Segregation to Administrative Lockdown.

These different names have been created in order to disguise the fact we are in what amounts to solitary confinement and to gloss over all the ills that spring from this practice.

I have been asked on many occasions how I've managed to maintain my sanity throughout these 32 years of torture, when so many others in solitary bring harm to themselves or others.

In 1971 I dedicated my life to the struggle for the liberation of my people. I'm guided by the principles and ideology of the Black Panther Party. Along with my two comrades, I understood what the system was doing to black men and women around the country as J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI launched his 'counter intelligence program,' COINTELPRO, to imprison or kill black militants. To us, it has been a struggle every step of the way.

There have been several attempts on our lives by prison officials. One of those attempts was documented by prison officers in detailed form, but learning of it only strengthened our passion to survive. We relied upon each other in confidence and trust. When one was down the other two gave him strength to pull through.

We understand the prison authorities' objective to mentally destroy us as much as physically destroy us, but we discovered freedom in our will to resist. When a prisoner yields his or her will to his captors, there is an eventual conflict with what is necessary for the prisoner's life and the interests of the prison officials.

Prison rules are often changing and the prisoner is expected to accept these rule changes and roll with them. This robs the prisoner of any sense of control and poses a dangerous mental conflict that often times drives the prisoner into psychological deterioration.

Dr. Stuart Gassian, Harvard psychologist, world renowned for his life-long work on solitary confinement, visited Albert and I in 2003. He focuses his attention on the hyper-responsiveness of prisoners confined in solitary. He uses examples of prisoners who describe their experience as being sensitive to noise, like dripping water, the sound of footsteps; this hypersensitivity wrecks the prisoner's nerves and yet there is nothing he can do about it. The inmate is unable to escape the noise and feels psychologically trapped. After an extended period of time, the torture of incessant noise is transformed from, "I can't stand the noise" to, "I can't stand the quiet." Chaos takes control and eventually the prisoners mental state becomes permanently imbalanced.

I have witnessed prison guards from 2002 to 2004, while I was in Angola's even more restrictive punishment unit, who have thrown buckets of ice water (in winter) on men who were in 4- point restraints, wearing only paper gowns. I've seen guards snatch food trays out of prisoner's cellbars and throw the tray against the wall, then call SWAT teams to gas and beat the prisoner for throwing his food. After the SWAT team is done with the prisoner, they take him to the infirmary and then the prisoner goes to court, is found guilty, sentenced to begin the punitive program from the beginning all over again, as well as pay for his medical treatment and restitution for damaging the paint on the wall.

Women guards are forced to lie by claiming that inmates have exposed themselves and masturbated in front of them. This is not to say that some prisoners don't do this, but it is because of this small group that security uses this to frame other prisoners who would never even think in terms of behaving in such a disrespectful way. There have been some female guards who refused to comply with the psychological games and they usually are framed themselves and eventually fired.

I honestly don't think I could have survived this many years in solitary had it not been for the structure of the Black Panther Party's Ten Point Program. You have to have a belief structure to survive and the strength and truth of the Ten Point Program has kept Albert and myself strong enough to withstand the unremitting torture of 32 years in solitary for a crime we did not commit.

The system in this prison and to the best of my knowledge, most other prisons, is designed to destroy any thoughts of freedom or independence. It is the direct response of a fascist government that fears the demands of poor people and people of color seeking freedom and the right to determine their own destiny. A reactionary response to the platform to possess full employment, reparations, decent housing, education, health care, an end to police brutality and the murder of poor and oppressed people worldwide.

We want freedom for all poor and oppressed people held in prisons, we want land and more than anything we want justice and peace. This is the belief system I cling to, it is my survival. Everything that is done to me makes me conscious of the fact that it is being done to undermine my thinking in the same manner that this government is presently undermining the Muslim world by attacking and occupying Afghanistan and Iraq, and by ending two centuries of struggle for independence in Haiti.

White supremacy is the problem and I fight that problem wherever it raises its ugly head and fight it with every breath in my body. Prisoners who live under these conditions fall under the scope of the 8th Amendment. Behind these walls of shame, we are not simply experiencing punishment as ordered by the court, via contemporary standards, we are experiencing punishment of a criminal nature that is shielded by the Prisoner's Litigation Reform Act (PLRA). Either the Congress is simply unaware of what is going on or it is in their political interest to turn a blind eye. The courts can only interpret what Congress and State legislative bodies enact into law.

In order to maintain one's sanity while trapped in Administrative Segregation, Administrative Lockdown or Solitary Confinement, prisoners must never allow themselves to adopt habits. If you smoke -- quit! If you drink coffee, tea or have an eating disorder -- challenge yourself. Beware of prison privileges which are designed to manipulate and control your lives. Watching television or listening to radio is acceptable only if it doesn't preoccupy your mind or prevent mental growth. As soon as you begin to think you need anything, the prison authorities will use this need against you. Give them nothing to use against you that you are unable to mentally control and you can survive. A high level of self-discipline, self-denial and self-pride are the key to surviving solitary.

Keep in mind, placement in solitary does not in itself trigger an 8th Amendment violation. The courts' position is that if the prison furnishes inmates with reasonable food, clothing, shelter, sanitation, medical care and personal safety, there is no violation of the ban on cruel and unusual punishment. In my opinion, punishment that endangers one's sanity is unconstitutional. For the past 32 years, I've experienced and witnessed both physical and mental punishment that seeks to destroy sanity which is far more harmful than physical abuse.
