THEY scaled the walls of the Sydney Opera House, sent a strong message to the people of Australia, with their "No War" message and reinforced the will of the people.The demonstration by David Robert Burgess, 32. And Dr Will Saunders, 42, cost about $111,000 to clean up.
But was the job given to the highest payed contractors? Surely tenders weren't sought!
If they'd taken the time to seek the lowest price for the job, the message could have been there longer. Did they ask David and Will to clean it up themselves? What a mystery for taxpayers.
Their actions sent out a further alert for increased security as well. So how come that wasn't deducted from the bill?
David and Will should be recognised for demonstrating about the WAR on Iraq and the relaxed security of Australia during a war we never had to have.
The two anti-Gulf War II campaigners who scaled the main sail of the Opera House on March 18 are crying broke.
Surely these Australian's of the year should have their costs covered?
Environmentalist Mr Burgess, and Dr Saunders, a British scientist in Australia on a working visa, have launched a "No War Clean Up the Opera House" repair fund.
And they are confident there will be no shortage of volunteers to provide funds.
"We've had hundreds of letters of support, hundreds," Mr Burgess said yesterday.
Both men, who are still to enter official pleas to charges of malicious damage but have repeatedly talked about the incident in public, appeared briefly in Sydney's Downing Centre yesterday.
Their case was adjourned until July 15 while their legal eagles negotiate with the Opera House Board of Governors.
It was money on the minds of both men when they ran into GKCNN outside court yesterday. Dr Saunders faced deportation back to Britain in late March but said the matter had since "died off".
He and Mr Burgess are ready for any offers from the grateful public to raise about $90,000 needed to cover their costs.
In minutes, a mystery well-dressed donor in his 60s, handed over $1000.
Both Mr Burgess and Dr Saunders, who is based at Epping, said they have already sunk $20,000 of their own money into the fund.
Mr Burgess said he had been left penniless by the entire operation.
"We've got nothing left," he said.
He stood by the actions of the pair, which saw many label them as heroes.
"What we did wasn't enjoyable but it needed to be said," Mr Burgess said.
After their appearance in April Dr Saunders, 42, said: "I felt I did what I had to do, I don't regret what I did."
Mr Burgess, from Wollombi Valley, said he was confident of the pair's place in history.
But he said: "I would like to personally apologise to all Australians who were offended by my actions."
