30A.org AT THE OPERA: An eyewitness account

Well I rode into town on my pushbike and went straight down to the Quay to the protest location, got to about Surry Hills and could smell horse shit thinking the cops aren't far off. Sure enough I went around the corner and there were four cops on horseback and they were in riot gear so I avoided them.

I cut across Hyde Park but couldn't avoid the cops on every street corner. Must be hundreds! On my own quite early so I thought I better scan the area to see what the fuss was all about and the chopper was overhead loud as hell hovering above the skyscrapers.

Trying to warn off the protests is not a bad trick from the police gang but there is strength in numbers I thought, touch-wood! So it was quite early about 4pm and I wandered down the mall to get a drink to throw off any suspicion and to see what prevents the protesters getting to the Opera House.

But as I went closer it just got worse. A big cruiser in the harbour and cops walking all around not your average cops either they got the big ones out!

Just then I went over to the water to look into the sea and this bunch of cops comes past in this rubber dingy like the avengers of the neo-cons. Shit I thought, I'd better wait till the tribe gets here before I go any further. And to add to that feeling the atmosphere was bent just like a war zone and now I know what that feels like, cold and uncertain about your presence and future.

I knew I should have been a reporter!

Guerrillas everywhere, so I go over to a table just for fun and ask these tourists, "is this what normally happens around here?" Thinking if I had company it wouldn't feel so bad. Well they looked at me startled and said, "We can't believe it either". Just then they got up and left. I shouted 'be alert and don't be alarmed' they took no notice and I didn't blame them as I was definitely thinking the same thing myself.

Oh well, I thought I've come this far I guess I should have a look at the end. And when I got there it was a dead-end, a trap and I seen about 10 people and a girl with a sign that said 'No to corporate Greed' and a 100 police so I thought no, now is definitely not the time.

Like cold steel I slowly pushed my bike out of there away from the 'rocky web' for fear of prosecution for minding my own business and as I got closer to the Quay I felt relieved.

Then the tribe arrived from the Town Hall and what a relief to be with some real people at last. Then a short time later lots of people several hundred and if I can just say that the atmosphere was back to normal and not like a war zone.

That point I would like to express to everyone of you for this is precious and something we must never take for granted or for that matter ever let john hoWARd forget, amongst other things!

Even with hundreds of people at the Quay the police gang surrounded the people bridging up on three sides and most likely although I did not notice in the building as well and that would have fenced everyone in. The chopper noise drowned out the speakers until it was almost time to march to the dead-end! Coppers on horses, in the harbour, on foot and in the air for what? Forbes!

The police gang like to fence the protesters in and surround them grunting and staring is the tactic and if taxpayers are prepared to be pushed to that level then it is time to stand up for your rights to protest as well. Don't let them stand over your youth and fellow citizens who should be allowed to protest and demonstrate without feeling sick in the stomach with fear and worried about being there.

Or even to walk onto the forecourt of their Opera House and not be stood over by a bunch of cops and goons hell bent on foxing, intimidating and victimising the community so they will either get out of the trap and not protest or get caught in it.

Do we employ our police to intimidate?

You can just go down to Circular Quay sometime in the next three days and stand by your fellow citizens just as observers.

LAPD Accused of Unprovoked Attack at Vigil

NATION OF ISLAM minister Tony Muhammad, standing in front of Muhammad Mosque

US: LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa promised an investigation last Friday into claims that a Nation of Islam minister was beaten by Los Angeles police during a vigil for a shooting victim.

Supporters of Tony Muhammad, western regional director of the Nation of Islam, are calling for tougher scrutiny of a police department that has repeatedly faced allegations of using excessive force.

Police said Muhammad was "very belligerent and uncooperative'' when officers asked that two vehicles to be moved on the Thursday night during the vigil. They said two of Muhammad's bodyguards also began fighting with officers, who called for backup.

Muhammad was arrested on suspicion of committing battery against a police officer.

In a series of news conferences last Friday, the mayor, police officials and religious leaders called for calm, and Villaraigosa and Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell promised an investigation.

"We will hold anyone accountable for breaking the law,'' Villaraigosa said.

Community activist Danny Bakewell, president of the Brotherhood Crusade, said he believes Muhammad was "battered brutally in an unprovoked attack by the Los Angeles Police Department.''

Unless the department is reformed, "We all walk in danger,'' he said.

Muhammad, his lip appearing badly swollen, told a group of supporters earlier Friday: "Nothing's changed in 40 years. We are at the bottom and we might as well stand the hell up today.''

The vigil Thursday night was for Nahun Beaird, 21, who was fatally shot the night before. Some area residents didn't believe paramedics did enough to try to save him and had accused them of covering his body with a sheet while the victim appeared to still be alive.

When members of the crowd demanded paramedics remove the sheet and attempt to revive him, the paramedics, who had been loading a second victim into an ambulance, complied but were unable to resuscitate him.

Fire officials said Beaird was dead when paramedics covered him. Doctors at California Hospital Medical Center said Beaird had died at the scene.

McDonnell said Beaird was another needless victims of violence that grips the South Los Angeles neighborhood where he died. The area, just 8 percent of the city, has had 42 percent of its homicides this year, McDonnell said.

He implored residents not to let differences with the Police Department divide a mutual effort to reduce crime.

WA/ Satellite Surveillance

Dear Friends and fellow stakeholders,

Re : Satellite Tracking of offenders of serious crime released to community supervision.

AUSTRALIA: WA: It is understandable that the Minister for Justice is looking towards a surveillance program. His department have failed him and need to be constantly under his watchful eye and surveillance of their own key performance indicators.

However, his proposal for using high tech satellite tracking of specific types of offenders in WA could be seen as just another attempt to produce a 'tough on crime' vote winner. Such new technologies always look good on paper. Then comes the serious questions. How does one effectively police it, and will it really act as a deterrent?

Then there is the cost of establishing and maintaining such an operation over one of the largest single jurisdictions in the world. We also need to ask if this plan has been discussed among other government departments such as Police, Family and Childrens' Services, the Aboriginal Policy Unit - and the independent judiciary? Should not the offender be presenting as a low risk to the community when they leave the prison and under the eye of community corrections officers?

Knowing that resistance is strong among perpetrators of Domestic Violence, the further knowledge that someone is looking from far off may not lessen their motivation to be in close proximity to the focus of their attention. And how will police be able to respond? For example, what is going to happen to a person who is living out at Marble Bar or the back of Bruce Rock who is placed on a domestic violence order? By the time that the police get to the scene, the offender may have produced a further victim. Offenders and Victims need real support following the aftermath of crime not pie in the sky Robocop. Surveillance from the sky fails to address violence in the family home.

What we need is a balance here. More surveillance through the support and concerns of Community Corrections officers who need to do more than invite an offender into their office once a week. It takes time and energy, including government resources to challenge offending behaviours, and this and previous governments have failed victims of crime and the community by showing disregard for effective community based and prison programs.

The 'What works' principles have been continually watered down or even neglected in WA, leaving offenders, victims and the community with an Offender management which is itself under review by Justice Mahoney and the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services, and a justice system that seeks the headlines such as this to distract public attention from grass roots failings, high prisoner numbers and a constant stream of dissatisfied victims of crime. The satellite needs to look into the justice department to see what is working and what is not.

We do need to find more support and attention to Strong women's groups and Men's groups, and effective rehabilitation programs that see offenders treated as social beings and not individuals and outcasts from social structures of support. Quality research into this area is essential.

Surveillance techniques will not prevent crime, and will only remove the public gaze from the immediate concerns of a justice system itself requiring constant surveillance.

Brian Steels

A pensioner support group has called upon the state government to provide all other people with the same satellite surveillance programs as the Minister of Justice is supplying to ex-prisoners and serious and career criminals.

Spokeswoman for the group, Ms Killjoy, said that the program will be able to be purchased similarly to the new rent-a-cop.

Ms Killjoy say that 'Under the new surveillance scheme, any housebound partner will be able to keep track via satellite of their errant loved one who may have a desire to call in at a house of ill repute or a local casino". 'It will also assist grandparents who wish to keep an eye on the shortcomings of grandchildren as they wander through shopping centre' Malls say Ms Killjoy, 'and of course, it could help parents who may wish to know just where in the neighbourhood, their prized genetic seeds are being sown at any time of the day or night'.

Under the tag-a-mate scheme, any community minded group can purchase hours of tagging and satellite surveillance time and rumour has it that channel 10 is wishing to purchase the rights to screen some footage live to air.

Spokesman for Road-Toll Express says that it will be able to give truck operators and shipping companies a better idea of where the goods are disappearing to, adding "we have wanted to track our truckies who like to stop in the bush for a long pee for some time. Now we can tell just how long some of those stops are, we can't wait for the day when we can get prints to go with it'.

A corporate sponsor for the Minister, says that his company's chocolate product 'time-out' will seek further sponsors in this innovative program that began life as a prisoner watch-dog. 'The possibilities are endless, you can't believe just how far we can ruin someone's fun and impose havoc on civil liberties - this is just the start'. He went on to say that 'Our next big step is to use surveillance link-ups with home surveillance kits, and a state of the art IT package called bedroom peeps - of course this can't be used by ex prisoners, but everyone else will really get a turn-on!

He did concede to the author that this could go against the kind of thing that some prisoners programs had tried to put a stop to.

Brian Steels with some WA humour on the tag-a-mate@ program.

Fishing expedition pays off

Arrest after ASIO fishing expedition

A man whose home was targeted by ASIO in fishing raids this year is facing fraud charges along with a co-accused who is linked to firearms offences.

Seems if ASIO pilfer through people's affairs they do come up with some material that they can use against the victimised in a court of law. Then they can go on to exploit the very condition they sought.

This material is intended to verify the claims made by ASIO and the propaganda is used to raises their stakes, that those who were victimized were terrorists.

At least one of those charged is an associate of Abdul Nacer Benbrika, a Muslim fundamentalist preacher. Mr Benbrika was criticised recently when he defended Osama bin Laden as a "great man". His Melbourne home was also raided, in June, by ASIO and police.

But what he actually implied was that there is no proof that Bin Laden was the culprit in his mind. Fair enough because that is what a lot of people actually think too. So what is the difference between us and him? He was raided and a fishing expedition took place in his home giving the authorities material that was otherwise private and confidential.

Fadal Sayadi, 25, and Aiman Joud, 20, both of Melbourne, are accused of obtaining property by deception, a charge believed to relate to the use of an allegedly stolen credit card, and of an attempt to commit an indictable offence.

A spokesman for the pair said they would plead not guilty.

But out comes the dirt before the trial from SMH

Joud is also charged with breaching a suspended jail sentence. He was sentenced to one month's jail in January after pleading guilty to car stealing. He was also convicted of receiving and handling stolen goods.

The cases against Sayadi and Joud are set for mention on September 6 and are expected to be heard at a later date.

Then why has his alleged priors been publicised in the Sydney Morning Herald this morning?

2nd Renaissance -10 The War on Witches [150]
In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII issued a Papal Bull that became the rationale for establishing the Inquisition in Germany. The following excerpt from the Bull sets out the official view of the danger of witches to the community. The Bull and this this passage provided the sole excuse for the torture and cruel executions that were, ultimately, to be the fate of up to fifty percent of the population of some villages.

Don't) mention the word J**

Mention the word Jew in anything except reverential tones and it's like calling the Pope a paedophile. Talk about walking on soft-boiled eggs as Muddy Waters used to sing.

Such is the lock the Zionist propaganda machine has on the way anything to do with Israel is reported that even 'Jews' are not exempt from the wrath of the Zionist disinfo blitz as the various vicious campaigns being conducted on university campuses amply demonstrate against so-called self-hating Jews who don't fall into line behind the mythology of the Zionist state testifies to.

Now many in the West excuse this craven obeisance by putting it down to some kind of collective guilt about the 'Holocaust', oh that such guilt should extend to my Roma brethren, who were also exterminated in their millions and to this day, remain the 'niggers' of Europe, excluded, ghettoized and victimised.

Where are the endless stream of documentaries and rending of garments concerning our treatment of the Roma people? Where are the daily news stories about the continued treatment of the Roma right across Europe, let alone what the Nazis did to them sixty years ago?

However, talk of Jews as a 'race' controlling the media, banks etc, is not only incorrect, it entirely misses the point about the role Zionism plays in the imperialist project and indeed the key role that Zionism has played throughout the 20th century as a weapon of imperialism.

Worse still, Zionism has virtually nothing to do with being Jewish, it's yet another sleight of hand pulled by imperialism. Being Jewish, which aside from its religious connection is very much a state of mind, which just goes to show how successful the propaganda has been in creating an illusion about the Jewish 'race'.

We declare openly that the Arabs have no right to settle on even one centimeter of Eretz Israel ... Force is all they do or ever will understand. We shall use the ultimate force until the Palestinians come crawling to us on all fours. - Rafael Eitan, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, quoted in Yediot Ahronot, April 13, 1983, and The New York Times, April 14, 1983

Can you imagine what the reaction of the Western media would have been if the statement above had been made a Palestinian, or indeed anyone who is not Jewish? So how is it that Israeli Zionists can get away with such obviously racist statements?

Central to the issue of Israel and 'Jews' is the ideology of racism as an essential element in the class war being waged against all who oppose the imperium. An ideology used to divide and rule, an ideology so pervasive that it completely determines any and all debate about Israel, whether it be the 'right' that Jews allegedly have to 'return' through to the way the West regards Palestinians and its brazen acceptance of being 'Jewish' as a justification for theft, murder and oppression.

Israel may have the right to put others on trial, but certainly no one has the right to put the Jewish people and the State of Israel on trial. - Ariel Sharon

For anyone has been following the massive propaganda campaign that has been conducted over the 'evacuation' of settlers in Gaza, one thing is clear; Palestinians are obviously non-people for how else can one explain the gulf between press coverage of the relocation of the settlers with the following statistics

1,719 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip from the end of September 2000 until today; and according to various estimates, some two-thirds of them were unarmed and were not killed in battles or during the course of attempts to attack a military position or a settlement.

Based on figures from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, of those killed, 379 were children under the age of 18; 236 were younger than 16; 96 were women; and 102 were the objectives of targeted liquidations during the course of which the Israel Defense Forces also killed another 95 individuals who, according to the military too, were "innocent" bystanders.

Some 9,000 Gaza residents were injured; 2,704 homes to some 20,000 people were razed by the IDF's bulldozers and assault helicopters; 2,187 were partially destroyed. Some 31,650 dunams of agricultural land were left scorched.

'The remaining 99.5 percent' Amira Hass

Were such statistics to be about Israelis, again, imagine the clamour in the Western media! There is only one explanation for the existence of such a vast chasm between press coverage of Israel and that of the Palestinians and that is the role racism plays in reducing Palestinians to that of sub-humans, but don't take my word for it, let the Zionists own words speak for them

[The Palestinians] are beasts walking on two legs - Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, speech to the Knesset - New Statesman, June 25, 1982.

And these words are by no means the exception, they underpin the central thrust of the Israeli state's propaganda war which is to project 'Jews' as the eternal victim, and of course, the epithet 'anti-semite' is synonymous with any criticism made of the Israeli state's colonial/imperialist objectives.

May the Holy Name visit retribution on the Arab heads, and cause their seed to be lost, and annihilate them.

It is forbidden to have pity on them. We must give them missiles with relish, annihilate them. Evil ones, damnable ones - Israeli Rabbi Ovadia Yosef , Ha'aretz April 12, 2001

Is this Osama bin Laden speaking or the so-called pinnacle of Western civilisation, our 'Judeo-Christian' culture? And the propaganda campaign is endless without a day passing when there isn't some reference to the 'plight' of the Jews in the Western media. Interminable documentaries on the suffering of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis but rarely a mention of the many millions of others who were exterminated using the same methodical and ruthless system. So complete is the appropriation of the Holocaust by the Zionists I am surprised the word hasn't been trademarked.

And the following statement sums up the policy of the state of Israel and points to how fundamental the role of racism is in relegating first and foremost Palestinians and then the Arabs to that of a sub-human species from the very beginning of the founding of Israel, hence betraying the notion that the current response is to Palestinian 'terrorists'.

The state... must see the sword as the main if not the only, instrument with which to keep its morale high and to retain its moral tension. Toward this end it may know it MUST invent dangers, and to do this it must adopt the method of provocation and revenge... And above all, let us hope for a new war with the Arab countries so that we may finally get rid of our troubles and acquire our space - Diary of Moshe Sharett, Israeli's first Foreign Minister from 1948-1956, and Prime Minister from 1954-1956.

The parallels with the Nazi concept of 'lebensraum' or loving space is not lost on me even if it is ignored by the Western media.

Instead, Western media coverage continues to misrepresent the reality of the illegal Israeli occupation, so we read in an article titled 'Israeli PM faces West Bank gamble' on the BBC News Website today, 25/8/05

Even as Israeli forces moved in to clear four West Bank settlements, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon reaffirmed his commitment to settlement construction.

Mr Sharon was referring to the large blocs of Ariel and Maale Adumim, and controversial plans for new suburbs linking the latter to Jerusalem.

He has made no secret of his intention to hold on the major West Bank blocs.

No mention of the fact that all the settlements on the West Bank are illegal, instead they are presented to us "controversial". The piece ends once again by placing the responsibility on the Palestinians

Much now depends upon what happens in Gaza.

Will the Palestinians focus on peaceful reconstruction or will radical groups seek to use the abandoned settlements as launch-pads for attacks into Israel?

Will violence simply move from Gaza to the West Bank, where the Israeli Army will still patrol the area of the evacuated settlements?

Israeli PM faces West Bank gamble

Thus the issue of the vast bulk of the illegal settlements on the West Bank is neatly sidestepped as the BBC's report is already setting the stage for the next series of hoops that the Palestinians will have to jump through.

Through continually misrepresenting the reality of continued land grabs, not to mention the genocidal policies of Sharon's government in carving up what's left of any putative 'Palestinian state', as being dependent on the actions of Palestinian "radicals", the media avoid the issue of Israel's illegal policies. And in fact, the BBC article, quoted from above, doesn't once mention that the actions of Israel are in fact illegal under international law as well as innumerable UN resolutions going back for thirty years.

What has to be emphasised is the fact that I picked the BBC article pretty well at random, it could have been one of literally dozens of articles from a wide range of 'news' sources, all of whom ignore the fundamental reality of Israel's policies toward the Palestinians and focus instead on how 'unreasonable' the Palestinians are, or how they had to 'curb' the actions of 'radicals' before Israel even conceded to rehousing a mere 2% or so of the 450,000 illegal settlers on what's left of any future Palestine. And note here that unlike the 2700 Palestinian homes destroyed by the Israelis since September 2000, with armoured bulldozers and helicopter gunships, sometimes with the inhabitants still inside, the Israeli settlers will be rehoused (at US taxpayers expense), many on the continually expanding settlements on the West Bank. The same cannot be said of the Palestinians whose lives and livelihoods have been destroyed.

As some reportage has made plain, Gaza is now one big prison instead of four, yet what this means, what it says about Israeli policies toward the Palestinians is still ignored by the mainstream press, even as the words are uttered.

There can only be one explanation for such a deliberate myopia and that is a racism so entrenched in Western news coverage that it can blatantly ignore the awful injustice of Israeli actions and policies. It points once more to something I will continue express 'til I die, that the ideology of racism is a major stumbling block to opening peoples' eyes to what is going on in the world and that until we face this reality, we cannot begin to deal with our rulers actions, let alone our own role in allowing the continuance of such an unjust world.

JUDAISM AND ZIONISM Part 1 of 5

Rabbi Goldstein gives a historic overview of zionism and the creation of the zionist state, explaining its incompatibility with Judaism. Neturei Karta (Jews against zionism) 23 December 2001. Rabbi Goldstein explained to his Muslim audience that whilst for Mr. Arafat and the Palestinian Authority its a political struggle and they may compromise with the zionist state and settle for 50%, 25% or whatever they can get, he cannot do that. Ideologically religious Jews cannot recognise any part of the zionist state. "...The Muslims people basically got involved in the fight against zionism when it started effecting them on a political basis which is 1917 for the Palestinians or afterwards for some of the other Arab countries, We [religious Jews] were in this fight from the 1890's roughly... As soon as it was founded [zionism], it was condemned - Jews came out and said this is atheistic, this is idol worship..." Say no to Indonesia as a tourist destination

No holiday and not cheap!

Random drug tests for Aussie tourists in Bali? Then why would you go?

Australian tourists visiting Bali's nightspots will face random urine tests under an escalating anti-drugs crackdown on the Indonesian holiday island.

But this is just nonsense and could only bee seen as propaganda by the Australian and Indonesian Authorities. In short by the powers that be dictating to all Australians!

The hype!

Bali police drug squad chief Bambang Sugiarto told said he would adopt the hardline tactic, controversially trialled in recent raids on Jakarta clubs, to stamp out the drug trade.

"We tried to use educative and preventive efforts," he said. "So, after doing that, and the people still use drugs, since we have laws to uphold then we have to take action like launching raids, arrests."

His men would now force clubbers to undergo urine tests, Colonel Sugiarto said. "We cannot go to every party but we go in at random and based on priorities."

Previously, only patrons apprehended carrying drugs were forced to provide urine samples.

But perhaps people want to take drugs when they go out and just because it is not a 'legal drug' doesn't mean it's not useful or even more useful. So I guess now the Australian authorities will insist that this is what can happen in Australia somewhere down the track and more likely to be being promoted for that very reason by propagandists here?

Sydney model Michelle Leslie, 24, faces up to 15 years in jail after being caught with two ecstasy tablets in her bag as she entered a party at Kuta's GWK Park last weekend.

After visiting her in prison yesterday, her new lawyer, Basuki Prawirodipuro, was confident but had not studied the case in detail.

He is one of a team of five Indonesian lawyers who specialise in drug cases. He was hired by Leslie's family following Friday's sacking or resignation of her former lawyer, Muhammad Rifan.

At the Denpasar police cells, where Leslie is still being questioned, a friend yesterday said she was in good spirits.

Leslie would be fully prosecuted, Colonel Sugiarto said. "It is again a lesson for our tourists .... she regrets it, but it is too late, it happened already."

Australia's ambassador to Indonesia, David Ritchie refused to comment on the urine test plans, but emphasised that no Australian should take drugs in Indonesia.

Although Australians were not being specifically targeted, they risked being arrested and could face the death penalty for the possession of small amounts of recreational drugs, he said.

Great holiday destination?

Oh, we certainly know that by now and I doubt whether Australian's will be planing to go partying or for that matter anything else in Indonesia unless they just want the death penalty or to get locked up for 15 years?

Turn your back on Indonesia as a tourist destination that will teach them a lesson! Or else give them a mechanism to criminalise anyone they want and that's certainly no holiday!

Die for Us': ADF SMS recruitment

Defiance Force may start recruiting young people through SMS.

Young people could soon receive direct SMS messages from the Australian Defiance Force (ADF) encouraging them to die for their country. But they won't tell them they'll be participating in illegal and degrading wars.

The employment tactic is being considered as part of a fascist federal government review of Defiance Force recruitment and retention.

The government says young people's contact details can easily be bought from marketing organisations and the ploy is a common practice used by employers.

But that doesn't make it right!

Civil Liberties Australia spokesman Anthony Williamson says the move raises privacy concerns.

"We have concerns about how those companies get people's details in the first place," he said.

"It's often by way of signing on the dotting line with a lot of small print involved."

Mr Williamson says the proposal seems "very intrusive".

"We understand that the military has trouble meeting its targets but we don't think this is the appropriate way to go about doing it," he said.
