Galloway breaks consensus over London bombings

Parties show support, but Galloway breaks ranks.

Tony Blair wound up the G8 summit earlier than planned yesterday so he could concentrate on being briefed on the latest developments in the investigation to find who was responsible for the [false flag operation] terrorist bombings in the capital.

He was expected to return to London to start discussions on what extra measures might be required to tighten up security.

Before he left, Mr Blair compared the G8's attempts to save and improve lives with the terrorists who struck London.

He said: "The purpose of terrorism is not only to kill and maim the innocent. It is to put despair and anger and hatred in people's hearts. [Also as a call to arms for the British people to try to legitimise the occupation's of Iraq and Afghanistan and to continue with their resource wars in the Middle East.]

Blair: "It is by its savagery designed to cover all conventional politics in darkness, to overwhelm the dignity of democracy and proper process with the impact of bloodshed and of terror. There is no hope from terrorism nor any future in it worth living, and it is hope that is the alternative to this hatred."

Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, said yesterday that the attacks had "come out of the blue" and the intelligence community had had no advance warning.

The home secretary, Charles Clarke, will make a fresh statement to parliament on Monday, when he is expected to outline the latest findings from the investigation and whether new security measures are needed. He said yesterday he would have to consider whether to "intensify our action" against people thought to pose a threat.

He said: "Nothing has been ruled out, nothing has been ruled in as to the likely identity or the nature of the perpetrators of these crimes."

Speaking to journalists later after a meeting with faith leaders, Mr Clarke was asked whether, if failings by the security services emerged, there would be an open inquiry.

He said: "We have to look at the situation. Obviously we need to learn the lessons of what has happened, both the events themselves but also the way that all the agencies have responded.

"There is certain information that will come from forensics, when finally we have established how the bombs were detonated and what happened. That will lead to conclusions of the modus operandi of the organisation and therefore what type of organisation it is."

The Tories and Liberal Democrats said they would continue to offer full support to the government in the aftermath of the attacks.

A spokesman for the Conservative party said: "There are questions to be asked but not for now."

However, George Galloway, the Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, broke the all-party consensus by calling for Mr Blair and George Bush to resign.

Speaking at a news conference near the London bus explosion, Mr Galloway said the anti-war movement had a duty to speak out against the policies he said were to blame for the spiral of violence.

"We have to put into reverse the policies which have led us to this."

Mr Galloway said the safety of the British public would continue to be threatened unless the government changed course over its policies in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"If we start to change political course we will start to be more safe. It is the politicians who are to blame for this, not the police, not the intelligence services, because they warned us about this."

He described Osama bin Laden as a "medieval savage" and said he would only be isolated if there was no "swamp of grievance".

Statement by George Galloway British MP for the Respect party

The loss of innocent lives, whether in this country or Iraq, is precisely the result of a world that has become a less safe and peaceful place in recent years.

We have worked without rest to remove the causes of such violence from our world. We argued, as did the Security Services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain. Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the government ignoring such warnings.

We urge the government to remove people in this country from harms way, as the Spanish government acted to remove its people from harm, by ending the occupation of Iraq and by turning its full attention to the development of a real solution to the wider conflicts in the Middle East.

Only then will the innocents here and abroad be able to enjoy a life free of the threat of needless violence.
