Former ALP official found guilty of child prostitution offences

A Sydney District Court jury has found a former ALP official guilty of child prostitution offences.

Neville Francis Hilton faced court on 19 charges that he provided a premises for and obtained benefits from child prostitution.

The District Court was told two 13 and 14-year-old girls worked at a brothel Hilton part-owned near Wollongong in August of last year.

Hilton had told the trial he did not know the girls were underage because he did not think it was his role to ask for identification and he had been told they "checked out".

But after two hours of deliberations, the jury of five men and seven women have rejected the 64-year-old's claim and found him guilty of all 19 charges.

Hilton will face a sentencing hearing in November. His bail was continued.

The High Court today ruled in favour of a Queensland law student who handed out pamphlets at his local shopping mall declaring local police were corrupt and slimy lying bastards.

While the High Court found in favour of Patrick John Coleman by overturning a charge of insulting police, it found against him for charges of violence involved in resisting arrest.

He locked his arms around a power pole and struck and kicked police officers during the struggle to put him in a police van.

Mr Coleman was convicted in the Townsville Magistrates Court of two counts of serious assault, two of obstructing police, one count of insulting words and one count of publishing insulting words.

The Queensland District Court dismissed an appeal and the Queensland Court of Appeal allowed an appeal only against conviction for publishing insulting words.

Mr Coleman appealed to the High Court which focused on construction of a section of the now repealed Queensland's Vagrants, Gaming and Other Offences Act.

Mr Coleman argued that his implied constitutional freedom of communication concerning political or government matters was being infringed.

The court heard he was arrested in Townsville Mall where he was distributing pamphlets alleging four police officers were corrupt and referring to local police officers in Townsville as "slimy, lying bastards".

He stood in front of a placard which read, "Get to know your local corrupt type coppers, please take one." When Constable Brendan Power - one of those named in his pamphlet - approached, Mr Coleman loudly accused him of being corrupt.

He then resisted arrest, locking his arms around a power pole and striking and kicking at the officers as they attempted to put him in a police van.

By a 4-3 majority, the High Court allowed the appeal in relation to the conviction for using insulting words.

Six judges held that the relevant section of the Vagrants Act was not invalid. But three members of the majority held that its operation was limited to situations which could lead to violence.

Justices William Gummow and Ken Hayne said the legislation created an offence which restricted freedom of speech, but in the legitimate public end of keeping public places free from violence.

They said police by training and temperament should be expected to resist the sting of insults directed to them.

"The use of such words would constitute no offence unless others who hear what is said are reasonably likely to be provoked to physical retaliation," they said.

A majority of the Court dismissed appeals against convictions for obstructing police and assaulting police but not resisting arrest.

Ed: Seems clear that why a person resists arrest is because they don't think that they did anything wrong, yet police can still say that that person resisted arrest, even if that person has beat the base charge. Not fair!!

At all material times people cannot win against bullying police, in their institutions with their rule of law. Seems the police Trifecta card always wins, resisting arrest, offensive language and assault police. If you beat one of those charges they just hit you with the other two. Not fair at all!!!

Just remember that there are more ways to skin a cat. Don't let them cheat you. If first you don't succeed that way then try another way to prove your point. For instance: by posting your material where they can't get to you directly. On the street people are reasonably fair game.

Why is it an offence to convey the message that police are corrupt? Because the government is the problem!

The one that suppose to be autonomous according to Lord Denning. Where the Parliamentary Secretary can ask the commissioner of police to 'report' then sack him if he is not satisfied with such report.

Truth
Who is telling the truth? Well I guess Dr. Ed. Chadbourne or Mr. Peter Ryan may have the answer to that. Dr. Chadbourne sacked by Peter Ryan and more specifically in my view because he elected deputy commissioners Dave Madden and Andrew Scipione as the best men in the service in relation to his qualifications to make a recommendation in his capacity as human resources.That is if you believe that a Dr. can be corrupted.

Honesty
What is happening between the Police Service and politics is quite extraordinary at the moment. If stand over tactics don't work tell half the truth honestly and follow the example of sheep. Another word for it is sleaze, yeah. Another word for it is workplace harassment. Another word for it is bribing a Police Officer. Another word for it is misleading Parliament.

Interesting how a member of the Police Board Mr. Tim Priest would hold grave fears for his safety from dangerous senior police but fails to name them or have them sacked. Rather Priest resigns as if he had no powers. Could that mean what he was saying is that the Governments are also corrupt?

UN warns of worsening conditions in Darfur

The United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) says conditions are worsening in Sudan's western Darfur region.

The WFP says disease and hunger are threatening lives. It is trying to deliver food to some of the more than 1 million people who have been displaced by fighting but officials say disease and heavy rains are adding to the difficulties. The number of hepatitis cases has doubled in the past month.

United Nations special representative Jan Pronk is expected to report to the UN Security Council tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Sudan has accused rebels of kidnapping more than 20 aid workers in the troubled region. United Nations officials are investigating the incident.

The Sudanese Government says 22 health workers were abducted near the town of Nyala in southern Darfur. The staff were part of a vaccination program. The Government says they were kidnapped by rebels, but there has been no official confirmation.

In a separate incident eight Sudanese workers from the World Food Program and the Red Crescent organisation went missing on Sunday.

Rebels have denied that the staff members were abducted.

Rebel leaders and government officials are taking part in peace talks in the Nigerian capital Abuja. Both sides have accused each other of breaking a ceasefire agreement.
