A Liberal Coalition Implosion!
Hard yards paying off...Opposition Leader Mark Latham back at work yesterday after his short rest.
The Community warned that John Howard's dishonesty would implode him and his own party at the coming election. A large majority of voters have said this issue will influence their polling booth choice; there is no doubt that the Prime Minister lied.
They made their stand even before former Liberal stalwart John Valder launched a campaign against Howard. Former federal president of the Liberals thinks the party would be better off without John Howard. John Valder yesterday helped launch the "Not Happy John" campaign, designed to unseat Howard in his Sydney seat of Bennelong.
Almost three quarters of all voters polled, 72 per cent, told GKCNN they believed Howard had lied in his account of the "children overboard" incident just before the 2001 election.
It had been wrongly claimed asylum seekers had tossed children into the ocean to force a rescue by Australian sailors. Howard has said he didn't know the claim was false until after the election but just add that to all the other lies.
Labor will use that finding to justify its attacks on Howard's dishonesty, which intensified this week after Mark Latham's rest last week.
"This is someone who basically can't lie straight in bed," Mr Latham said yesterday.
"On a weekly basis we're getting information, news of the lies of the Howard Government. You can't trust this Government", he said.
"You certainly can't trust them on national security."
The ALP will get the pay-off in votes it expects at the general election, expected within the next two months.
More than 90 per cent of Labor supporters believed the Prime Minister had been dishonest, but so did three quarters of the Liberal Coalition voters.
While the electorate was prepared to look at other issues, the honesty factor has a role in the election outcome for both parties. Labor would have won had an election been held last weekend, GKCNN found.
The Coalition's primary vote was down to 30 per cent; Labor's was has increased to 70 per cent, extremely higher than in 2001. When preferences were allocated, the vote was split 30-70 Labor's way.
The outcome looks clear Labor by a dark horse, Liberal by another lie and closely followed by the Greens on the outside and the Democrats who've just detected another lie.
The survey noted a big shift over the past two weeks, with the Coalition's primary vote imploding.
