Iraqis to vote on neo-colonial constitution

The referendum today in Iraq on the draft constitution is a cynical and, for the Iraqi people, humiliating event. Far from an exercise in self--determination, it is the next stage in a US--crafted, but increasingly crisis--ridden process aimed at turning Iraq into an American client state in the Middle East.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others among the clique responsible for the illegal 2003 invasion will use today's vote to justify their crimes with the claim that "democracy" is being realised in Iraq. In reality, even the date of the referendum was determined according to a schedule determined in Washington. For its own political purposes, the Bush administration insisted that a constitution be adopted this month so elections can be held in December and a government formed that advances US objectives.

The new regime in Baghdad will be bound to privatise Iraq's oil industry and sign off on a status--of--forces agreement sanctioning long--term US military bases in the country. What is now Article 109 of the document declares that the oil and gas wealth of Iraq must be developed on the basis of "market principles" and in a manner that "encourages investment". Article 24 dictates "the reform of the Iraqi economy in accordance with modern economic principles", which encourage the "development of the private sector".

The remainder of the constitution is riddled with absurdities and inconsistencies. Various clauses assert the rights of women and non--Muslim minorities, but Islam has the status of "official religion of the state" and no law can contradict the "established provisions of Islam". Freedom of speech, of the press and of assembly, is given constitutional protection, but only in a "way that does not violate public order and morality". The document prohibits arbitrary arrest, coerced confessions and imprisonment by foreign entities, yet the US--led occupation forces have thousands of Iraqis imprisoned without charges and will continue to do so, constitutional guarantees or not.

The mass of the Iraqi people has had no say in the document's formulation. It was drawn up in sordid negotiations between the US ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, the Kurdish nationalist parties that preside over an autonomous region in the north, and the Shiite fundamentalist parties that dominate the oil--rich southern provinces of Iraq. Large portions of the document were most likely written in the US embassy.

In return for their collaboration with its plans, the US has paid off the Kurdish and Shiite parties with a constitution that sanctions the establishment of federal "regions" in the areas they control. These regions will have considerable powers over oil revenues and the right to maintain their own "internal security forces". The constitution establishes the mechanisms for the Kurdish region to be expanded to include the main oil--producing area in the north around the city of Kirkuk.

The result is a document that overturns the secular traditions of Iraq, while marginalising the Sunni Muslim ruling class that held the main levers of power for most of the twentieth century. It threatens to leave the predominantly Sunni population of central and western Iraq living in a resource--poor region, but ruled over by a central government and security forces under the control of Shiite and Kurdish sectarian parties. The sentiment among Sunnis, who have the suffered the brunt of US repression over the past two--and--a--half years, is that they have been reduced from Iraqi citizens to a persecuted minority in their own country.

Such is the degree of sectarian heat surrounding the referendum, that it is expected most people will vote according to the edicts of their religious, tribal or ethnic leaders. The pro--occupation official media has predictably given prominence to the calls for a yes vote, particularly those made in the name of the leading Shiite cleric, Ali al--Sistani.

While the expectation is that the constitution will be endorsed, there is nevertheless nervousness among US officials and representatives of the Baghdad government over the prospect of an overwhelming no vote in the predominantly Sunni--populated provinces of Anbar, Ninawa, Diyala and Salah al Din. Under the terms of the interim constitution imposed on Iraq by the US in March 2004, a two--thirds no vote in just three provinces is enough to reject the draft.

In one indication of the depth of opposition, Associated Press reported Friday that in the Sunni suburb of Baghdad of Azamiyah "not a single referendum poster was visible". Over the past several months, hundreds of thousands of Sunnis, who boycotted the national elections in January, have registered to vote with the intention of repudiating the constitution.

Desperate to prevent any possibility of the constitution being defeated, the US and its Iraqi allies engaged in last--minute attempts this week to convince at least some Sunni leaders to call for a yes vote. As he did in Afghanistan, US ambassador Khalilzad played the key role in cajoling, bribing and bullying the various factions of the Iraqi elite, all of which, including the Sunnis, are willing to accommodate to the occupation in return for petty concessions and privileges.

A farcical amendment to the constitution was introduced that allows it to be completely rewritten by a simple majority vote in the next parliament within four months of the December elections. This concession was enough for the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party to withdraw its opposition and declare the constitution was one that any Sunni could support. As a result of the drawn out haggling, many Iraqis have not even received a copy of the document they are meant to vote on today.

Washington Post correspondents in Baghdad dryly noted on October 14: "Excitement over the charter seems low, and officials' ongoing deal--making--long after the August 15 deadline for a draft and weeks after the transitional parliament approved a supposedly final version for a national vote--has fostered a perception among many that the constitution will mean whatever politicians want it to mean."

To reach voting stations, Iraqis will have to navigate their way through an intimidating security lockdown, particularly in Sunni areas. Tens of thousands of troops and police are manning checkpoints and roadblocks. Since Thursday, all businesses have been ordered to close and a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is in force. All private vehicles were banned from the roads as of Friday night. The borders have been closed.

In parts of the western province of Anbar, however, there may be no voting at all. For the past two months, the Euphrates Valley--a focus of the insurgency--has been subjected to a massive US military offensive. Polling stations are unlikely to open.

Two years ago, there was no shortage of US officials and media commentators declaring the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime would trigger the flowering of democracy throughout the Middle East. Now, there is a general acceptance in Washington that Iraq is heading towards a sectarian civil war and that the most brutal methods will be required to secure US interests.

Regardless of the referendum's outcome, the stage has been set for an escalation in the scale and desperation of the insurgency in Sunni areas, where large numbers of people are likely to conclude they have nothing to lose from supporting the armed resistance to the occupation. The inevitable response of the US military and its puppet government will be stepped--up repression.

The US--created Iraqi security forces, which have been primarily recruited from Shiite and Kurdish supporters of the governing parties, are being ideologically prepared for atrocities that overshadow those committed in cities like Fallujah and Tal Afar.

Statements by members of the First Brigade of the Iraqi Army this week provided a chilling indication. Shiite Sergeant--Major Asad al--Zubaidi told a Knight Ridder correspondent: "When we [the Iraqi military] are in charge of security the people will follow a law that says you will be sentenced to prison if you speak against the government, and for people like Saleh Mutlak [a leading Sunni politician] there will be execution."

Standing within view of the main Sunni Umm al Qura mosque in Baghdad, Shiite Sergeant Ahmed Sabri declared: "Every man we've had killed or wounded is because of that mosque... Just let us have our constitution and our elections in December and then we will do what Saddam did--start with five people from each neighbourhood and kill them in the streets and then go from there."

The fundamental truth about today's referendum is that Iraqis have been set against one another on a reactionary sectarian basis so that the American ruling class can bring into existence a pro--US dictatorship and plunder the country's oil and gas.

'Why I just had to resign from the Labor Party' ex MP, not Latham!

A modern parable methinks in the Age 4th October via Crikey.com.au. I know I know, a bad case of co dependence. And notice the postscript too. All good grist as Green Mayors in Waverley and Marrickville step up, and Lab Libs install a Lib in Leichhardt and Randwick too.

Why I just had to resign from the Labor Party October 4, 2005

The ALP has become a branch office of the Liberals. It's sickening, writes Denise Allen.

Last Tuesday I resigned as a member of the Labor Party. I could no longer sit by and watch as the party I have loved since a child becomes a faction of the Howard Government.

My grandfather started the first local Alexandra branch of the Labor Party in my home town more than 80 years ago. From the age of five, I was allowed to sit on a chair in the kitchen and listen (as long as I was quiet) to the many Labor Party meetings that were held at our house because my father was secretary of the local branch for many years. I listened and learned. I grew up to be as passionate about the Labor Party as my grandfather, father, uncles and myriad relatives.

We were dedicated to social issues and a fair go for everyone. During the 1983 election, as I handed out how-to-vote cards, I wore a white T-shirt on which I had written on the front "J. C. for Victoria!" and on the back "God for Canberra!" (Referring to John Cain and Bob Hawke, of course.) Gosh, those were the passionate days when Labor was at its best.

I was a Labor devotee, a true believer, and anyone who knew me knew that politics was my subject of the day, every day.

In May 2000, I became the first Labor person and the first woman to win the state seat of Benalla after 97 years of conservative rule. It was the proudest moment of my life.

For the 21/2 years I was an MP it was the greatest honour as well as the greatest roller coaster ride of my life. It was exciting, rewarding, frustrating, depressing. I was heartbroken when, in 2002, the Nationals won the seat back. After working my butt off for two-and-a-half years and delivering more than $50 million in projects to the electorate, the majority of the voters went back to the party they said had deserted them. Go figure.

But over the past few years, I have sat back and watched the party I grew up passionate about, that was so much a part of our everyday thinking, move progressively further and further to the right and simply become another faction of the Howard Government with its me-too, me-too attitude.

In the past week, I have heard Kim Beazley talk about counter-terrorism laws that not only mirror, but seem to go further than, John Howard's. I have seen all the Labor premiers sign up to more of Howard's draconian anti-terrorism laws.

OK, you may say, it has to be done. We now live in dangerous times as we are constantly reminded every day with brainwashing anti-terror television and radio ads and silly fridge magnets.

But it is only so because the Howard Government's fear agenda has been allowed to flourish as the Labor Party has sat back like the little kid at school who gets sand kicked in his face and who is too frightened to upset the big boys.

The Labor Party I know would have fought tooth and nail against Australians' involvement in Iraq without UN sanctions. They would have protected Australia from terrorism by simply not being party to an illegal war. Their voices would have been loud and would have clearly defined what they stood for. The Labor Party I know would have countered Howard's fear agenda with one of peace.

This climate of fear is Howard's creation and instead of counteracting it with an alternative, forceful, intelligent debate, the Labor Party blindly accepts it and helps promote it.

Then there are the domestic issues on which Labor is so quiet.

Over the past week we have seen the plight of citrus growers across Australia. Not once have I heard anyone from the Labor Party calling on Mark Vaile, Minister for Trade, leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister, to explain where the Nationals are on this issue.

After all, aren't the Nationals the farmers' party? Why isn't the Labor Party making a mockery of the Nationals?

We are consistently losing Australian industry to cheap overseas suppliers, but where is Labor on this and every other contentious issue?

I'll tell you - in the shadows of the conservatives saying me-too, me-too.

Now we have Bob Hawke calling on Australia to be the garbage tip for nuclear waste. Money, money, money - that's what it is all about. Great idea Bob, not! Someone who was once part of my Labor Party dreamscape is now a bloody nightmare and just another apologist for conservative politics. The Silver Bodgie should go back to his million-dollar home in Vaucluse.

It frustrates the hell out of me - I can't stand it any more and I bet I'm not the only one.

Until more of the original Labor Party devotees stand up to be counted and go as far as resigning from the party, the party hacks and faceless factional men will continue to drag our party into the cesspool of conservative right-wing politics that is so alien to the traditional Labor Party true believers.

There are many good people in the Labor Party - where is their voice, why don't they stand up for their beliefs?

I want to scream it from the rooftops: "Where is my beloved Labor Party?" .. the one that was powerful and forthright, the one that took the fight up to the conservatives and gave them a run for their money.

For crying out loud .. this country desperately wants an effective Labor Party that will stand up for the rights of its people instead of being party to the denigration of our freedoms.

Where the hell are you? Why aren't you answering us? Why aren't you there for us?

This is not the Labor Party I grew up with, nor is it the Labor Party I want to be part of and, I have to tell you, it breaks my heart.

My father died last year - buried with his Labor Party life membership badge pinned to the lapel of his suit next to his war medals that he won fighting for the freedom of this country.

Now there was a proud Labor man and a true battler - a man who passionately stood up for everything he believed in.

I am sure he would turn in his grave if he knew his beloved Labor Party members are now simply sycophants of the Howard Government.

Denise Allen is a former state Labor member for Benalla.

Iraq's constitutional referendum makes a mockery of democracy

Iraq's referendum on the draft constitution to be held on October 15 has turned into a farce. Last Sunday, the US-backed ruling coalition of Kurdish and Shiite fundamentalist parties amended the country's electoral laws to virtually guarantee a positive result.

Under the transitional law drawn up by US officials in 2003, originally to guarantee the support of Kurdish parties, the referendum would be lost if a two-thirds majority in three provinces voted no. Sunni organisations and parties have been encouraging their supporters to register and to vote against the draft constitution, making it quite possible that the document will be rejected.

Such a result would be a disaster not just for the regime in Baghdad, but for the Bush administration which has sought to legitimise its occupation through the referendum and national elections planned for mid-December. In the event of a defeat, and if the transitional law were followed, it would mean going back to square one: fresh elections, a new government, a rewritten constitution and another referendum, with no guarantee this one would be accepted either.

Martin Navaias, a defence analyst at King's College London, commented to Reuters: "The fact is the consequences of this referendum being rejected are massive; they're just too ghastly to contemplate. If this referendum is rejected, it's an explicit rejection of the whole political process... It cannot be allowed to fail."

It was no surprise therefore that the Iraqi National Assembly voted to blatantly rig the referendum in favour of a yes vote. Under the amended rules, a two-thirds majority of registered voters in three provinces would be required to reject the referendum. In other words, if the turnout did not reach two-thirds or 67 percent, it would be impossible for the draft constitution to be defeated. Interestingly, the same definition was not applied to acceptance of the constitution, which still only required a simple majority of those who vote.

Despite the government's attempts to push the changes through quietly, Sunni leaders reacted angrily and called for a boycott unless the amendments were reversed. Fearful that a low Sunni turnout would further undermine the legitimacy of the vote, UN and US officials criticised the new rules. As a result, the National Assembly voted yesterday to overturn the amendments.

The furore threatened to derail behind-the-scenes efforts by US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad to engineer a deal to split the Sunni vote. Sunni organisations oppose the federal structure contained in the draft constitution, which would pave the way for the establishment of regional governments in the oil-rich Kurdish north and the Shiite south with extensive powers, including over oil revenues and security forces. The predominantly Sunni central and western provinces would lack resources and influence.

According to an article in the Washington Post, Khalilzad has been attempting to convince Shiite and Kurdish leaders to accept Sunni demands for changes to the constitution. To date, negotiations have stalled, after the ruling coalition refused to discuss any changes to the planned federal structure. "We have no objection to changes that help us to achieve mutual understanding but there is no way that we would agree to change the basic principles of the constitution," Shiite negotiator Ali Debagh declared.

The various sordid manoeuvres make a mockery of the Bush administration's claim that the referendum is another step towards democracy in Iraq. The presence of more than 140,000 US troops and ongoing operations against those opposed to the US occupation makes any democratic vote impossible.

The US military has been carrying out major offensives in the western Anbar province, where the population is overwhelmingly hostile to the American occupation. Around 2,500 American troops, along with Iraqi forces, stormed into the towns of Haditha, Haqlaniya and Barwana on Monday as part of Operation River Gate.

Helicopter gunships and US warplanes conducted pre-dawn strikes on the towns destroying bridges over the Euphrates River and cutting off electricity. US snipers took up positions on rooftops and loudspeakers blared out warnings to residents to stay indoors, as teams of soldiers kicked in doors and arbitrarily detained "terrorist suspects".

A similar offensive codenamed "Operation Iron Fist" began on Saturday in the towns of Sadah, Karabilah and Rumana near the Syrian border. A San Francisco Chronicle article described a pitched battle in Karabilah in which children as young as 11 helped resistance fighters by pointing out US positions. At least five civilians were killed when a US tank fired on a building allegedly containing insurgents.

A New York Times report on Monday, detailing US attempts to control the town of Rawa, pointed to the widespread hostility to the US occupation. Describing the town of 20,000 as a "Baathist stronghold", US officers candidly admitted they had received "little cooperation" from the residents. Since late July, US forces have been hit by two dozen roadside bombs and eight suicide car bombs and have responded with air strikes, random checkpoints and house-to-house searches.

After the latest sweep through the town, US Colonel Stephen Davis and his Iraqi counterpart Colonel Yasser addressed a crowd of 300, angry at the searches and arbitrary detentions. Yasser urged them to vote in the referendum. Davis bluntly warned the residents to expect more reprisals if attacks on US troops continued. "Some of you are concerned about the attack helicopters and mortar fire from the [US] base. I will tell you this: those are the sounds of peace," he declared.

Political uncertainty

Far from being aimed at freeing locals from "foreign terrorists", the object of these US operations is to terrorise and intimidate a population that is opposed to the American presence.

Sunni leaders, who are seeking to exploit popular sentiment to bolster their own position under the occupation, have threatened a boycott if the US offensives are not ended. "If US forces keep attacking Sunni cities, then in three or four day's time we will announce a boycott of the referendum," Saleh al-Mutlak of the Sunni National Dialogue Council stated yesterday.

Despite the US diplomatic and military efforts to ensure a yes vote, the outcome of the referendum is by no means certain. After boycotting national elections in January, Sunni organisations have campaigned extensively for supporters to register and vote against the constitution. According to the New York Times, US officials and private organisations say that registration now exceeds 80 percent in some Sunni areas. "Nobody will be surprised to lose Anbar, and maybe one other province," one Pentagon official told the newspaper, adding: "[But] we're not going to lose three."

Even if the constitution is adopted, the entire process will be widely seen as illegitimate. Senior US commander in Iraq, General George Casey, told the US Congress last week that he believed the referendum would pass. However, when asked if the political situation could worsen after the poll, he declared: "I think that's entirely possible. I mean, as we've looked at this, we've looked for the constitution to be a national compact, and the perception is that it's not, particularly among Sunnis."

Head of US Central Command, General John Abizaid, who also appeared before Congress, declared: "A vote for the constitution doesn't mean we're headed for peace and prosperity. Iraq is going to be a pretty difficult security environment for a while."

Both generals indicated obliquely that the military confronts a Catch-22 dilemma. In his testimony, General Casey said that US troop reductions were needed "to take away one of the elements that fuels the insurgency, that of coalition forces as an occupying force". But he played down his predictions in March and July of this year that there would be "fairly substantial" cuts in troop numbers by the middle of next year, saying that in a period of heightened uncertainty it was "too soon to tell".

Casey admitted that efforts to train Iraqi troops and police to replace US soldiers were running into problems. The size of Iraqi security forces is substantial-about 192,000-but few of them have, as Casey put it, "an independence capability". Only one of the 120 US-trained Iraqi army and police battalions was capable of operating without US forces, down from three in July.

The reason is not hard to fathom. The majority of recruits have joined because the security forces are one of the few available employment options. Many are sympathetic to the armed resistance to the US occupation, if not actual members, and do not want to fight other Iraqis. At the same time, they are widely viewed as US stooges and are regularly the target of insurgent attacks. It is not surprising that most are unwilling to fight unless pushed into battle by their US military "advisers".

The US-led invasion has created a nightmare for the Iraqi people and a quagmire for American troops. Its aim was never to bring peace and democracy to the Iraqi people, but to subjugate the country and its vast oil reserves as part of broader US economic and strategic ambitions in the Middle East. The sham referendum on October 15 cannot disguise the fact that, in pursuit of its goal, Washington is employing the most ruthless methods of repression.

Jordan's king doubts Iraqi elections possible
Iraq is far too unsafe to hold elections as scheduled in January and extremists would do well in the poll if Baghdad tried to hold it, Jordan's King Abdullah said in an interview. Excluding troubled areas from the nationwide poll would only isolate Iraq's Sunnis and create deeper divisions in the country, he said.

Then add some "cleansing" like she's just doing the dishes and then some "reconciliation" by slaying Hussein during a US election. Now you can go and tell everyone you're reversing the trauma but really you're killing two birds with one Saddam.

Politicians Grab for More Power

It's extraordinary that just a week after Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum agreed to strip away rights and privileges that Australians have enjoyed for generations to protect us from a terrorist threat their policies have helped to create, they have now agreed they want 4 year Federal parliamentary terms.

This push to extend the time, by which they can legally hold office while ignoring the calls for the inclusion of a Bill of Rights in the Australian Constitution, is symptomatic of the intellectual, moral and ethical vacuum in political life in this country.

Every 3 years Australians on the electoral roll are forced by law to give a signed blank cheque to a bunch of politicians who can promise them one thing while campaigning and do exactly the opposite while in office.

It's bad enough that electors can't do anything about it till the next Federal election when they have the opportunity of going through the electoral charade once again putting their faith in another bunch of politicians hoping that the next group will honour their electoral promises.

What is worse is that the Australian people are hamstrung by a Constitution where change can only be initiated by their parliamentary representatives. No wonder we see politicians from the major political parties calling for Australians to vote on referendums that increase the powers they can exercise, but ignore calls to hold referendums that protect and extend the rights that ordinary citizens can exercise.

Disillusionment with representative democracy is not just an Australian phenomenon. Around the world, fewer and fewer people are putting their faith in a system that in many people's eyes is democratic in name only. The situation is becoming more critical in those societies like Australia that do not have processes that allow people to directly pursue political reform through citizen initiated referendums and that allow them to recall representatives who do not fulfill their promises.

Political elites that stymie and ignore calls for reform and allow their people to impotently flail about in the political, ethical and moral quagmire they have created, do so (as the miners involved in the Eureka rebellion in 1854 demonstrated) at their own peril because ultimate political authority in a democratic society rests in the hands of the people, not their rulers or their parliamentary representatives.

'TERROR'

Terror is an everyday feature of our lives. The terror of losing your livelihood because of the government's new Industrial Relations laws far outweighs the terror that is created by the indiscriminate murder of people in Bali.

The daily terror experienced by the people of Iraq as a direct consequence of the invasion by the 'coalition of the willing' (an invasion that had the second largest reserve of oil on the planet for Western interests than the creation of a democratic State) is something that Australian's are now beginning to understand.

The terror of having to live with laws, that allow the State and its security agencies to detain and interrogate people without charge because they may inadvertently have information that may assist the authorities in their investigations. The terror of finding out that if you don't cooperate, you can be jailed for up to 5 years, are terrors that Australians who protest against their government's policies are beginning to experience. The terror of being an asylum seeker in this country, of being legally held in detention indefinitely because nobody believes you or wants you, is a terror that's experienced daily by the refugees on the Tampa who are still being held on Nauru.

The terror of having to live on an old age pension, after a lifetime of work, knowing that your contribution to society has not been acknowledged let alone valued, knowing that you will have to sell your home to get access to a nursing home bed, is a terror experienced by many elderly Australians every day of their retirement. The terror of knowing that you have to wait for a public hospital bed in an understaffed and under-funded public hospital sector is a terror experienced by many Australians who don't have the disposable income to buy private health insurance.

The terror of being a Muslim in Howard's Australia, knowing that you will be personally blamed every time a bomb goes off in the world, by a population that's conveniently forgotten that the presence of Australian troops in invading armies in Afghanistan and Iraq may have something to do with the current spate of suicide murders. The terror of being an indigenous Australian living as an outcast on the margins of a land your people have continuously occupied for over 40,000 years, waiting for Australians to start the reconciliation process by entering into a meaningful treaty with this land's original owners, is a terror indigenous Australians have experienced for 217 years.

These are just a few of the terrors we face as individuals and as a community in Australia today. Terror is directly linked to the level of insecurity people experience and feel in their day to day life, it is not just caused by indiscriminate explosions.

Same old left-wing propaganda drive. The only people buying that shit are the 10% who vote for the Greens and other fringe parties. As far as the vast majority of Australians are concerned, it's just a load of irrelevant, untrue whingeing crap.

They hate democracy
By Little Johnny Hitler Thursday October 06, 2005 at 12:40 AM

No surprise that Chris Parsons, MIM's perennial right wing troll, should turn up to cheerlead for the destruction of democratic institutions. I thought you were a fan of democracy Chris, why are you so keen to make sure that political puppets of corporate hegemony undermine what is left of our democratic institutions? Please tell us how democracy will be helped and strengthened by:

* electronic voting (used by Bush to steal the last US election through vote rigging)
* voluntary voting
* flexible four-year terms
* removing the seven-day grace period for new enrolments after an election is called
* limiting the amount of time electors have to notify authorities of a change of address to three days
* banning prisoners from voting
* threshold for disclosure of political donations to increase from $1,000 to $10,000 or even be completely removed (yet at the same time the HoWARd Government plans to force unions and other interest groups to reveal their campaign spending outside election periods)

All these measures have been proposed by the coalition. If we want to talk about "strengthening" and "improving" democratic processes let's get fair dinkum about it:

* Develop a foolproof electronic voting system then introduce electronic referenda for every bill before the parliament. To weed out party hacks and morons we could test for understanding and comprehension of the implications of the proposed bill before allowing voters to participate. Such a system would prevent us from getting involved in criminally stupid enterprises like the illegal invasion of Iraq - for instance.

* Introduce proportional representation (MMP) to break the stranglehold of the two party charade

But they're not going to be doing anything of the sort are they? They hate our freedoms. They hate democracy. We should deal with them the way they dealt with Saddam.

No News (Ltd) is good news?
By Arselicker Parsons Friday October 07, 2005 at 10:42 AM

We could assume that many Australians are stupid, apathetic, greedy, self-absorbed, uninterested, uneducated, ignoring us etc. etc. but is there more to it that that? I would suggest there is more to the story. What role does the media have in informing the public of issues and leading us to better understanding through in-depth analysis? As opposed to exploitative sensationalism designed to move "units". Can we blame the public if media owners use their interests to pursue their own agenda? Here's a little example. The ABC and The Age have both rightly dedicated prominent space to exposing the incompetence and corruption of Amanda Vanstone.

"A DEFIANT Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone has absolved herself of responsibility after her department's handling of the Vivian Alvarez Solon case was branded "catastrophic" in a damning independent report."

"Senator Vanstone and Immigration Department secretary Andrew Metcalfe yesterday publicly apologised to Ms Alvarez Solon. But when asked about her ministerial responsibility, Senator Vanstone said: "The Prime Minister has made his views clear on this ... he doesn't believe ministers should be held responsible for things they clearly have no knowledge of.""

'It is a shameful episode'

Obviously ministerial accountability is a figment of the publics imagination. If you wish to avoid accountability for your departments mistakes you simply say "I didn't know" just as Bart Simpson would say "I didn't do it" and the world is your oyster. So what does a so-called democracy really represent when there is no accountability by ministers to the people they are supposed to represent?

Getting back to my main point, where was Australia's largest media organisation (News Ltd) when it came to reporting this incompetence/corruption/gross dereliction of duty? Well they didn't even consider it newsworthy. And why should they when their CEO Rupert Murdoch is trying to wrangle even greater domination of media ownership opportunities in this country? Is he going to bite the hand that feeds him? Is that how he became the most powerful media owner on the planet? Did someone mention conflict of interest? Given this is but one example of many is it any wonder the Australian public behave like mushrooms. What would you expect when you are kept in the dark and fed bullshit? If we had half decent reporting on politics in this country there is a fair chance Howard would never have been elected. Lets hear no more of this bullshit about democracy and the opinions of "the majority" from the minority of arselicking morons like Chris Parsons.

Media Terror
By Bill Posters Friday October 07, 2005 at 11:59 AM

Very nicely put, Arselicker, the mainscream media certainly have a lot to answer for when you look at it that way. I'd even go as far as to ask who are the real terrorists, or at least have "links to Al-Quaeda" or something worse. It's not one Journo or particular show, but the whole corporate news experiment - its not working, or it is working depending on what kind of world you want. Anyhow, what's on page three?
