Cop Watch - police distribute corpse photos

Police distribute corpse photos on work time.

The November 3 ABC Newsonline reports that no police officers will be sacked, as requested by families members, for the distribution of a photo of two corpses.

The Western Australian Police Service says that 600 police officers received an email of a photo of the two corpses of men who died in Western Australia's north-west in April.

Of the 6oo coppers who received the photo, presumably on worktime paid for by the taxpayer, 183 officers forwarded the email, including 50 outside the police force.

Open Letter to Australian Senate

Every West Australian needs to take note of the proposed terror legislation that will be debated in the Senate next Tuesday. Our own Premier has sold us out, and the time has come for some serious and organised protest in WA to protect our democracy and civil liberties. Write to the Senate, to the papers, and to every political party. This is a fundamental issue that affects the future of our society.

Australian Democracy Outlawed by Terrorism

Dear Senator,

Next week the Prime Minister will ask you to outlaw democracy with legislation that removes our basic democratic rights conferred under the Constitution. Media coverage and public protests have indicated that Australians are prepared to draw a line in the sand, and to follow common sense rather than laws that confer ultimate power on a Prime Minister who seems determined to undermine Australian values and security.

The time has come for every Senator to vote according to his or her conscience, and with a full understanding of the future implications of passing the "Terror Laws" in their current form. The so-called "counter" terrorism legislation [scapegoat legislation to bolster support and quell dissent for the Coalition of the Killings illegal and degrading resource wars in the Middle East] will enable police persecution of the Muslim community and threaten dissidents with imprisonment. In a country without an Act of Rights, the prospect of more draconian Terror Laws delivers ultimate control through fear. Australia, with its history of penal colonies, racism and detention centers, is now set to become a police state.

If you agree to pass these laws, you will be supporting the terrorists and giving them the victory of defeating Australian democracy. You will also be handing ASIO and state police draconian powers to covertly search, detain without charge, and shoot to kill on the basis of simple "suspicion".

Ask yourself "why are these laws needed?" Prior to our unpopular and unnecessary involvement in an illegal war, Australia was a peaceful multi-cultural society with opportunity for every Australian to work for a fair wage and to be educated. Today we have become a society where profit is more valued than family or environment.

The Howard Government rules through fear and abuses its power in the Senate. The Australian people and the international community have condemned the Howard Government for a growing list of travesties. Amnesty International has brought international attention to our shameful treatment of refugees.

Workers, the ACTU, and the unions have angrily protested the unjust IR legislation that dismantles hard-earned workers' rights. The numbers of anti-war protestors have swelled as the invasion and occupation of Iraq threatens global peace and has killed more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians. The American-led occupation of that country has delivered a more chaotic and dangerous society than the Iraqis purportedly suffered under Saddam Hussein.

Now John Howard is asking you to sacrifice our basic democratic rights because he and a handful of cronies have "information" about "threats to our security". Are you prepared to believe the man who lied to Parliament and the people of Australia about the "children overboard affair'? Are you prepared to continue to support the only leader who has closed Parliament to the people so that he could "welcome" President Bush? Are you prepared to trust that the intelligence he secretly guards is accurate, given the deceit about non-existing weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?

The Australian people no longer trust this man. We do not believe that he is safeguarding our security and safety. We believe that he ignores our protests, and instead takes his advice from a President whose cowboy antics have led this world to the brink of a religious global war. We suspect that his sole purpose is to create more wealth for the wealthy and to sell out Australia to the highest bidder. In short, we no longer respect or believe John Howard.

However, we do respect our country, our peace and our basic democratic and familial rights. As citizens, we realize that we still have the power to choose to obey laws that are just and create an orderly and fair society. We can also choose to disobey laws that threaten our personal security and safety and future democratic rights of our children.

The Terror Laws are an abomination of justice. They mock the right of parents to discuss the welfare of their children. They threaten freedom of speech and protest. They abuse the basis of our judicial system. They place every Australian who publicly protests at risk. They encourage further profiling of the already besieged Muslim community. These are not laws that Australians support or respect.

You are the last peaceful hope we have of protecting our basic democratic rights. Consider this carefully when you cast your vote on legislation that makes the Government "the terrorist to fear". Show us that Australian democracy still works.

Yours sincerely,
Wanda Fish

First and foremost, the legislation provides for extensive detention without charge or trial, on the flimsiest of pretexts. With no notice or legal hearing, any person can be thrown into secret "preventative detention" or placed, by a "control order," in isolation under house arrest.

Shoot to kill on the belief of reasonable grounds is a problem
Provisions in relation to use of force in s105.23 raise serious concerns. In particular subsection 105.23(2) specifically contemplates the use of lethal force against a detainee where an AFP member believes on reasonable grounds that this is necessary to protect life or to prevent serious injury to another person.

Sedition Laws Target Peaceful Civil Disobedience

Stanhope flags doubts on 'hasty' terrorism bill

Spots and Stripes
It is well known that John Howard, infamous lackey and liar, is devoid of anything that could be remotely regarded as masculine or manly; the draconian measures he has implemented to 'secure' Australia against the terrorist bogeyman are astounding.

They know where you live
Twenty-four hours after the country's leaders agreed to draconian counter-terrorism laws this week, the Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, was playing down media claims that ASIO believed there were 800 would-be suicide bombers living in Australia.

When Terrorism Outlaws Democracy
On September 27, 2005, Australian democracy surrendered to terrorism. On that day, a coalition of willing federal and state leaders agreed to anti-terrorism legislation that will enable police persecution of the Muslim community and threaten dissidents with imprisonment. In a country without a Bill of Rights, the prospect of more draconian Terror Laws delivers ultimate control through fear. Australia, with its history of penal colonies, racism and detention centers, is now set to become a police state.

800 people deemed a potential security risk?
As reported in the Australian today, ASIO has apparently identified up to 800 people deemed a potential security risk. Ruddock says the draconian COAG measures "deal with people who pose a risk to the safety and security of the Australian community." Hmmm, like detained and deported US peace activist Scott Parkin perhaps? What is this broad definition of a "Terrorist"?

Democrat Will Oppose Anti-Terrorism Laws
NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has accused the Premier, Mr Morris Iemma, of selling out to John Howard after agreeing to new 'Anti-Terrorism' laws yesterday. Dr Chesterfield-Evans said the proposed laws agreed to by Morris Iemma will not work.

ONE OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S MOST SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS, Deputy Commissioner Tim Atherton, has resigned after sending sexually explicit emails to two junior female officers, said Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan and reported in the Northern Territory News 26 September 2005.

The reason for the resignation had been withheld from the public for over a week. The details of the payout that Mr Atherton received has not been disclosed to the public. The matter is going to be examined by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

In yet another case of coppers appearing to have too much time on their hands, a senior police office in Victoria has sent what was described as an offensive email with an attached photo to a victim's advocate and a councillor, according to the Sept 28 Herald-Sun.

The photo was of a very muscular 'scantily clad' woman. The email was titled 'Scary women .... BIG CANNONS.'

The police officer concerned had previously worked in the equity and diversity unit.

The matter is being investigated by the Police Integrity Commission.

A FORMER HEAD OF ASIO and a royal commissioner has said that police corruption in Victoria is at its highest level ever, according to the October 4 Australian.

Sir Edward Woodward, a veteran of 17 Royal Commissions and Inquiries, has said in a recent book that when he was involved in a Royal Commission into off-course betting in 1958, he was convinced that 60 per cent of the police force were being bribed by bookmakers or they ignored illegal gaming.

Woodward said that "Unfortunately, now, I think that corruption is worse than ever, particularly because it is allied to the drug trade with great potential for large sums of money to change hands and police turning a blind eye or even becoming directly involved in activities in the drug trade."

He calls for the establishment of both a Victorian and national permanent police integrity commission to combat police corruption.

The book, One Brief Interval, has been published by Melbourne University Publishing.

INTERNAL NSW POLICE DOCUMENTS obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald reveal that NSW police lie about police car chases, ignored commands to stop and switched radio frequencies to dodge official supervision while taking part in chases, according to Oct 5 Sydney Morning Herald.

Truth is I'm concerned that as an Anti-War demonstrator, Peace Activist and general dissident of Howard, that I am a "Terrorist" - who somehow poses a threat to National Security? Am I? Are you?

"I can not guarantee that Australia will not be the subject of a terrorist attack. No law can guarantee that." - John Howard 27th September 2005.

The preventative detention powers agreed to by our beloved WA leader yesterday, will allow suspect persons to be held for up to two weeks by state police and 48 hours by federal police. That's without charge or trial.

For my mind, I'm very concerned that these laws will restrict my personal right to free speech; suppress my voice as a dissident of government policy and put me, my family and friends at risk.

If Scott Parkin was labeled a threat to national security [ie a potential "terrorist"] then I too should have something to fear from ASIO and the Prime Minister.

Surely in our reasonably open and transparent democracy we have the right to Protest and speak out! Who are the terrorists, when totalitarian laws are put in place to scare us into silence?

Keep an eye open because in the wake of these new laws, police can hold terror "suspects" for up to 14 days without charge, use tracking devices to monitor their movements, and seek penalties for people who "incite" terrorism.

What constitutes a "suspect"?

The new counter-terrorism laws have been described as, totalitarian, retrograde, draconian, path to a police state, a fascist regime, an absolute disgrace, a dereliction of duty - the list goes on. In a race for seeing to be doing something, the State Premiers and Prime Minister of Australia have all failed to protect our very own human rights and safeguard our way of life. As Australians, we will regret it for years to come.

Patrick Emerton, the co-author of a report by legal academics and community lawyers opposing the Commonwealth's anti-terrorism proposals, said the agreement on preventive detention and control orders was very disappointing.

"We still haven't seen any detailed evidence put forward as to why we need these measures, which undermine Australia's tradition of liberal democracy," he said.

He said the proposed laws were un-Australian measures that would sit more comfortably in totalitarian countries where people could be locked up without proper safeguards.

The Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, warned that the new laws represented a severe erosion of individual freedoms and would create fear and division in society. He said Australians should be worried at the possibility that they could be detained for questioning for up to 14 days, on the basis of nothing more than "intelligence". "It's very frightening to think of the future," he said.

The government = PARANOIA...

But its not just the Muslim community who need to be alarmed. Its activists and demonstrators too. Its the average commuter at threat of Eight shots to the head for catching a train. Its every Australian with a bone to pick with Howard. LOOK OUT!

I wonder just how long its going to be before ASIO come barging through my front door, take me away to an undisclosed location, keep me for an indefinite period - simply because I may be a "threat to the safety and security of the Australian community," - simply because I disagree loudly with Howards ludicrous totalitarian measures.

When will it end?
