The Un-Australian: Bullshitting is worse than lying?

Australia: The Un-Australian Newspaper: "AS well as all the bullshit in politics, there's even more in our metaphoric and colloquial language. Bullshit is the subject of serious philosophical inquiry in a little book called On Bullshit, published by the 'highly respected' Princeton University Press. To the surprise and delight of the author, it's stampeding out of bookshops all over the world."

And I can't wait to bowl someone over to get a copy myself, can you? Plenty of interest by the Un-Australian as well considering all the bullshit that comes out of the Murdoch press these days.

The Un-Australian: "The words of 'wisdom' on this improbable subject come from a 76-year-old moral philosopher, Harry G. Frankfurt. Professor Emeritus in Philosophy at Princeton University in the US, he has been studying bullshit for more than 20 years and has come to the conclusion that bullshitting is at least as bad, and probably worse, than lying."

So now I suppose that takes liars off the hook. Or does it? I wonder how he managed to separate the two? Did he get a knife and cut a turd in half? Then paint one half a different colour and call it something else? Oh! He's not bullshitting he's just lying. Thank God for that!

Will liars now think that it's okay to lie and they can get off lightly - just like they have a new moral code but still lie and normalise the whole process so they don't feel guilty about lying to you? At least not morally because they were not bullshitting they were only lying, right? Wrong!

This laugh of the century could only come out of the Murdoch press because of the daily lies they seek to purport. They'd have you believe they were lying for a noble cause and certainly not as bad as bullshitting in anycase.

Just telling a few lies for the HoWARd Government in return for some advertising revenue but nowhere near the very same thing as bullshitting to everyone especially when it's bullshitting we should be more worried about? Right? Wrong!

Makes me want give up my day job and study moral philosophy!

Of course you could understand why liars require an ambiguous meaning to the world lying when that's what they do, because being a liar is okay now or at least not as bad as bullshitting. So I suppose if you follow this wise man's argument that bullshitting is actually worse than lying then if you have to lie at least you were not bullshitting right? Wrong again!

The Un-Australian: "When the Professor Emeritus in Philosophy at Princeton University chewed the cud about it, Frankfurt pointed out that a liar has some respect for the truth. Otherwise he wouldn't feel the need to lie about it. Whereas a bullshit artist doesn't care about the truth. What he cares about is what you think about him."

Well I'm not a rocket scientist but generally I cannot separate the two, can you? If you follow this new moral code – when John HoWARd lies he has some respect for the truth? - Opposed to bullshitting according to the professor - that is not linked------- at all------ with the----- truth and therefore------- much worse than------ lying generally?

The Un-Australian: "To demonstrate, Frankfurt cited the example of a humbugging politician giving a Fourth of July address. (You may like to transpose what follows to Australia Day, Anzac Day or any other national celebration.) He drones on about "our great and blessed country" and how the founding fathers enjoyed God's guidance in providing the world with "a new beginning for mankind". But he doesn't really care what the audience feels about founding fatherhood or God or manifest destiny. First and foremost, he wants to make the right impression, to be seen as a patriot."

The plot thickens

The Un-Australian: "Frankfurt agreed that echoes of such humbuggery could be found in almost every speech given by an incumbent or would-be president. It's only when the humbugger starts making claims for, say, WMDs that we move from bullshit into lying."

In other words they weren't bullshitting, which is a capital offence they were just lying so that's okay?

But I'd love to be one of the judges at the Hague War Crimes Tribunal they'd never get out of jail for having no remorse for their illegal and degrading war on Iraq.

How do you plead for the killing, maiming, and torturing of over 100,000 innocent men, women and children and for failing to count the dead?

Can you imagine the Coalition of the Killing telling the judge's that they just lied about WMD's, but at least they weren't bullshitting?

They'd have to give them life for being a smart arse let alone committing the crime itself! At least that is the way a court of law would treat anyone else!

The Un-Australian: "But bullshit is bad enough.

I wish I was born yesterday then I could cop that? But if the honest man lied about his killing and really knew the truth that he did kill then clearly he was having no insight into his offending behaviour and further from the ---- truth of the--bullshitter who didn't know the truth or at least ignored it which in my opinion is the very same thing!

So how is lying more linked to the truth than that of the brain dead idiot who was bullshitting? Don't you just love it when liars don't bullshit they just lie knowing the real truth? Ha, ha, ha, that's got to be a joke son?

The Un-Australian: "Yet while the liar is disapproved of, even despised, the bullshitter is effectively forgiven. He gets away with it. And profits from it. The professor agrees that it's because the bullshitted are often complicit. Though people insist they can pick it a mile off, they hunger for it. Can't stop it they mean! But I must admit I actually wake up every morning myself and the very first thing that enters my mind is where is the lies in the corporate media today and I don't discriminate between lies and bullshit either because I wouldn't wast my time. In my respectful view even though I'm not a Professor Emeritus in Philosophy I cannot be bought or sold by this bullshit here!

The Un-Australian: "We probably take it lightly because we know the bullshitter knows he's talking bullshit and he probably knows we think it's bullshit. So what's the harm?

Trouble is, says Frankfurt, that it gets harder and harder to "know how things truly are". Matters of substance become impoverished and tawdry. At least lying has its standards".

Right! What fu__ing standards are those?

The Un-Australian: "So Frankfurt believes that the bullshit artist can be, already is, a threat to democracy."

But certainly not the liars right? Wrong again!

The Un-Australian: "We talked of pre-war speeches by Bush and Blair, how bullshit crossed the line into lies but was bad enough without them. Frankfurt factors in contemporary views - postmodernism comes to mind - where truth and falsity dissolve, where nothing can be claimed as a certainty. Is this an environment that encourages, or at least tolerates, bullshit? What was it that Marx said about everything solid melting into air?"

The Un-Australian: "On one level, Frankfurt's book is a great entertainment. But that doesn't entirely explain the way it's selling. Readers, it seems, share the good professor's anxieties about the problem."

Sure they do the reader who wants to get away with lying and who's up someone's arse no doubt!

The Un-Australian: "Writing without resorting to jargon, Frankfurt has a reputation for trying to get "to the bottom of things" and has struck a chord by examining something that we've taken for granted, something short of a sin and outside the Commandments, that nonetheless undermines our public lives. Yeah... how could we have taken for granted the difference between bullshitting and lying? Was it because we just imagined that bullshitting is slang for lying? And this Professor is up George W Bushit's arse no doubt about that. But we all know George W Bushit and the Coalition of the Killing don't bullshit they just lie so how could everyone be so wrong by not asking whether bullshitting and not lying is a sin outside the 10 Commandments?

The Un-Australian: "He's right. And bullshit is getting thicker and thicker in our public and political lives. Before we get bogged in it, let's fight fire with fire. There's only one antidote. Whenever and wherever you hear it, call out . . . "BULLSHIT!" -"

But I would argue that BULLSHIT COMES OUT OF A BULLS ARSE AND LIES COME OUT OF A HUMAN BEING'S MOUTH. SO I GUESS WE CAN ALL SEE THE FUNNY SIDE TO THAT IF WE NOW HAVE TO REFER TO JOHN HOWARDS MOUTH AS A BULLS ARSE!

CALL OUT LIAR! AND TELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME THE DEVIL. YOU LIAR HOWARD YOU'RE A WAR CRIMINAL NOW OFF TO THE HAGUE WITH YOU!

Two Australian academics...? Have argued that torture should be legal even if it causes the death of innocent people.

But how wrong is that? And I suppose even if the information gleaned from that torture is wrong?

Are these Australians academics? That's the next question. And what has academic got to do with common sense and social skills? Obviously Zip!

Maybe more to do with prestige rather than skill!

John HoWARd and Peter Costello;'The Mean Men in Black'?

I take it, that this outcome could be so, because for far too long the Australian curriculum has not been balance between academic skills and social skills and this sort of misinformation from so called academics falls very short of human rights and standards.

Of course academic standards can also be bought and sold for prestige. So have they been encouraged by the 'Men in Black'?

The later rather than the former in my opinion is more likely than not to ring true.

If you were an academic in Humanities for instance, how could you go past the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners? Or Standard guidelines for corrections in Australia?

Furthermore, how could they not consider themselves as someone who could be tortured? Is it okay for them? Did they undertake any experiments on themselves to see if it was okay for them? Is it in their paper?

The fish always rots at the head

The head of Deakin University's Law School, Professor Mirko Bagaric, and fellow Deakin lecturer Julie Clarke have written an article supporting their view.

In the article, they argue that when many lives are in danger, "all forms of harm" may be inflicted on the suspect, even if this resulted in "annihilation".

And like I said above, even if the result is that only false and misleading information will be gleaned under duress.

In other words worthless?

This is the Mean in Black folks!

Not merely two academics because these two, wouldn't make an academics arsehole because they're not only embarrassing themselves, they have just critically damaged this countries reputation again, if in fact the other academics are going to even consider taking these stooges for real! And as head of a University I guess they will at least try to take them seriously.

The sinister motive of course is that the Australian Government has been caught with its pants down over many human rights abuses including torture and now seeks to justify the official truth!

Shame HoWARd Shame! What a shame!

The article - Not Enough Official Torture in the World? The Circumstances in which Torture is Morally Justifiable - is soon to be published in the University of San Francisco Law Review.

Understatement

Professor Bagaric has said he expects to be criticised for his views, especially on torturing innocent people.

"Of course, it is far more repugnant to inflict harm on an innocent person than a wrongdoer," he said.

"But in some extreme cases, where it is almost certain someone has information that could prevent many lives being lost and there is no other way to obtain that information, the mere fact that they're not directly involved in creating that threat doesn't mean they can wash their hands of responsibility."

These fools should go into the Guinness Book of Records for the most academic fools in Australia's history besides John HoWARd and his cronies...The Mean Men in Black.

Like other control unit prisons across the country, the SHU are prisons within a prison. They are solitary confinement cells where prisoners are locked up 23 hours a day for years at a time. The one hour a day these prisoner sometimes get outside of their cell is spent alone in an exercise pen not much larger than their cell, with no direct sunlight.

NSW Police seizing assets to bolster budgets?

Seized assets to bolster police budgets is going to place crime solving into the corporate arena. Why should they go after a common criminal who is poor? Instead they'll be searching for assets and then solving crime. After all, police budgets will depend on it.

Perhaps making sure people are criminal just to seize assets? Not possible? Think again! If the police have an obligation to solve crime and a priority to seize assets as being essential to running the Force then they will have an obligation to seize assets and not solve crime and to make crime happen. After all the budget depends on it. Police will be rewarded by the Minister for a particular high profile event that has incorporated lots of assets for police to exploit.

The Police Minister John Watkins needs and education in prestige and corruption or does he? Not that stupid? You bet. The fact is this minister can work it out, no doubt, so why the flawed policy? Ignorance? Or greed? Or Both?

The budget of New South Wales police will be boosted by the use of money seized from criminals. This is a bad policy! If assets are seized they definitely should not be used to bolster police budgets but instead be handed out to the victims of crime and aiding in the prevention of more crime.

Police Minister John Watkins has announced $2 million from the State Crime Commission's recovered assets pool will be available each year to police.

Watkins says police officers, specialist commands and local area commands will be able to apply for up to $100,000.

Watkins says the money comes from seized bank accounts, cars, boats, real estate and jewelery from criminals and their associates.

"We'll be using some of that money to fund other activities against criminals such as controlled undercover operations to buy drugs and guns and other contraband or to pay informants to hire goods, covert cars or premises, or to meet personnel or overtime costs," he said.

NSW Police Minister John Watkins has avoided answering more than half the questions put to him in this parliamentary session, says Liberal counterpart Peter Debnam.

Gang activity in Sydney's south-west, fire arms theft, police administration, domestic violence and assaults on police officers were topics that he refused to discuss at all, Mr Debnam said.

Mr Watkins said, "As for Mr Debnam's claim that he and Premier Bob Carr had been *establishing a secret police force*, he said,

"We have a *smart one*. That's why Peter Debnam *doesn't fit in*."

Following allegations that officers from the Wood Royal Commission had been involved in supplying heroine and cocaine, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon put 18 questions on the matter to Mr Carr late last year.

Carr replied, " I am advised that the matters referred to in the questions have referred to the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

THE DOG: Toothless terrier's, instead of watchdogs and yesterday the SMH signalled changes to the ICAC, by the Carr Labor Government. What next?

And how smart is this Labor Government? Perhaps too smart to answer questions? Just how smart is this police minister Watkins? Watkins wants to solve crime by asking question does he?

Good example for the wider community, by not answering questions himself? Police will be using seized assets to profile people from all walks of life and especially people who have money. People who have struggled to survive to gain and retain assets.

Police will be alleging you're a criminal, regardless of whether you are or not. And guess what? It takes 'assets' to defend against the allegations, to pay for a private lawyer. Police prosecutors would much prefer you had Legal Aid to defend you, I am sure. That's if you're granted Legal Aid to defend your appeal, after you've been convicted, because that's how good Legal Aid is at defending you.

This policy opens the door very wide indeed for police corruption and noble cause corruption, in the highest order, at the cost of solving crime. The seizure of assets is a front for bad policy by the Carr Labor Government. Don't give police 'criminals assets' because that's all they'll be looking for, besides lining their own pockets while the boss is not looking. In this case Bob Carr and his cronies especially the dunce Watkins, Minister for Police, a smart arse who doesn't know how to answer questions Mr Speaker!

How to become corruption resistant in NSW

I am disturbed by Governments 'actions' in relation to shuffling the police service. Clive Small seconded into Parliament like a cocky in a perch. A breach of the fundamental Separation of Powers Doctrine does not in my view allow the thought of intervening, planning, or shuffling to stack the deck of our police service. The one that suppose to be autonomous according to Lord Denning. Where the Parliamentary Secretary can ask the commissioner of police to 'report' then sack him if he is not satisfied with such report.

Australia's Political Underworld...& their enforcers
The promotion of law and order means money to big business. Profits from insurance, security fixtures, patrol services and the like can only continue to grow if the perceived threat of uncontrollable crime wave escalates. In the past few months there have been many examples of the true nature of our blood thirsty politicians and their sinister attempts to spoon-feed a not so gullible public with their repetitious rhetoric.

Truth
Who is telling the truth? Well I guess Dr. Ed. Chadbourne or Mr. Peter Ryan may have the answer to that. Dr. Chadbourne sacked by Peter Ryan and more specifically in my view because he elected deputy commissioners Dave Madden and Andrew Scipione as the best men in the service in relation to his qualifications to make a recommendation in his capacity as human resources.That is if you believe that a Dr. can be corrupted.

Honesty
What is happening between the Police Service and politics is quite extraordinary at the moment. If stand over tactics don't work tell half the truth honestly and follow the example of sheep. Another word for it is sleaze, yeah. Another word for it is workplace harassment. Another word for it is bribing a Police Officer. Another word for it is misleading Parliament.

Lord Denning
Interesting how a member of the Police Board Mr. Tim Priest would hold grave fears for his safety from dangerous senior police but fails to name them or have them sacked. Rather Priest resigns as if he had no powers. Could that mean what he was saying is that the Governments are also corrupt?

Clive Small is Bob Carr's choice for the new Police Commissioner. It could only be the case considering his, Small's special appointment into Parliament House. Small who suffers from the little person syndrome is the ideal bend over boy who gets shuffled through his corrupt actions. Rolling the legal system for him after the fact, just like his predecessor Roger the dodger Rogerson.

The Premier, Bob Carr, relies on a militia. A gang of bikies and our Police Service, to show all of us he is no murderer. He should be taken to the task along with his partners in crime like Clive Small to account for those people who like my self have been maliciously assaulted and who have complained, without any service and those who cannot speak for themselves who were murdered, like Terry Falconer. Terry murdered in custody.
