Doomadgee's body released for burial

The body of a man who died in custody on Palm Island last month has been released for burial.

The state coroner says Cameron Doomadgee's body is in the Townsville mortuary.

A notice posted on Palm Island today says the funeral service will be held at 11am tomorrow.

Meantime Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says police and the family have come to an agreement for the funeral where one plain-clothed officer, who is well known to the family, will attend.

Mr Doomadgee was found dead in the Palm Island police watch house on November 19.

Thousands of people marched in Townsville yesterday in protest against the death in custody.

A community justice group fears the men granted bail over the Palm Island riots in north Queensland have been set up to fail. Chief Magistrate Marshall Irwin imposed strict conditions in granting bail to those accused of rioting and other offences on November 26.

Cedric Barry, 20, was jailed yesterday for breaching his bail conditions on Tuesday.

The Justice Group's chairman Graham Pattell says Barry's arrest is not a good sign for the others on bail.

"This is their writing in the sand really isn't it?" he said.

"I think it is just the start of a political war by the police force. They've declared they are going to ensure that all 19 apparently are going to breach their bail conditions, that's what it seems to me and I'm not really surprised."

More than 1,000 people have marched in Townsville in north Queensland to protest against the death in custody of Palm Island man Cameron Doomadgee. The crowd cheered and applauded loudly as they walked past the Townsville police station.

Lex Wotton, the man the police allege led the Palm Island riot chose the time to report to police as part of his bail conditions. Wotton raised his arms in acknowledgment of the crowd but remained silent. Cameron Doomadgee's sister Elizabeth ran from the crowd and embraced Wotton calling him her warrior. The march continued down to Central Park to a rally where elders and Indigenous community leaders addressed the crowd.

Clark crashes Indigenous affairs ministers' meeting

Aboriginal leader Geoff Clark says he gatecrashed a meeting of federal and state Aboriginal affairs ministers today to highlight the plight of Aboriginal people.

The Federal Government is trying to abolish ATSIC and previously suspended Mr Clark from his position as chairman.

Mr Clark had the decision overturned by the courts.

Mr Clark says his role at ATSIC gives him a standing invitation to today's meeting.

He was given a seat at the meeting table and shook hands with the Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister, Amanda Vanstone.

Mr Clark says events such as the riots at Palm Island last week show the Government is not representing Aboriginal people.

"The fact is that ATSIC at its national level has severely been interrupted," he said.

"[It] shows that there is no Aboriginal structure in place to give that support to Aboriginal people which they're due and they're entitled."

A spokesman for the Palm Island community in north Queensland says the funeral for a man who died in police custody may be another two weeks away.

Cameron Doomadgee died in the police watch-house on Palm Island two weeks ago.

The results of a post mortem examination led to riots on the island.

Community spokesman Brad Foster says lawyers for Mr Doomadgee's family are still waiting for the results of a second autopsy.

"They received a letter from the coroner saying that the pathologist is actually going through all the information making sure it's all tested properly," he said.

"It's looking at probably taking four or five days to a week before they come to a conclusion and then they release the report.

"It's actually looking more like two weeks away at this stage."

Meanwhile, a Cape York Aboriginal leader says the recent violent clashes between police and Palm Islanders should not spoil Indigenous relations with police in other communities.

Mapoon Aboriginal Community chairman Peter Guivarra says police work is appreciated and supported in most communities.

He is calling on those communities to resist violence.

"I know all Aboriginal people and all Palm Island people would not condone that and they would probably be led by a few," he said.

"It'd be just totally disastrous if that sort of thing happened again."

I am disturbed by Governments 'actions' in relation to shuffling the police service. Clive Small seconded into Parliament like a cocky in a perch. A breach of the fundamental Separation of Powers Doctrine does not in my view allow the thought of intervening, planning, or shuffling to stack the deck of our police service. The one that suppose to be autonomous according to Lord Denning. Where the Parliamentary Secretary can ask the commissioner of police to 'report' then sack him if he is not satisfied with such report.

Truth
Who is telling the truth? Well I guess Dr. Ed. Chadbourne or Mr. Peter Ryan may have the answer to that. Dr. Chadbourne sacked by Peter Ryan and more specifically in my view because he elected deputy commissioners Dave Madden and Andrew Scipione as the best men in the service in relation to his qualifications to make a recommendation in his capacity as human resources.That is if you believe that a Dr. can be corrupted.

Honesty
What is happening between the Police Service and politics is quite extraordinary at the moment. If stand over tactics don't work tell half the truth honestly and follow the example of sheep. Another word for it is sleaze, yeah. Another word for it is workplace harassment. Another word for it is bribing a Police Officer. Another word for it is misleading Parliament.

Interesting how a member of the Police Board Mr. Tim Priest would hold grave fears for his safety from dangerous senior police but fails to name them or have them sacked. Rather Priest resigns as if he had no powers. Could that mean what he was saying is that the Governments are also corrupt?

Clive Small is Bob Carr's choice for the new Police Commissioner. It could only be the case considering his, Small's special appointment into Parliament House. Small who suffers from the little person syndrome is the ideal bend over boy who gets shuffled through his corrupt actions. Rolling the legal system for him after the fact, just like his predecessor Roger the dodger Rogerson.

The Separation of Powers Doctrine is nowcontaminated witharangeofcolours, now leaving us with a black shirt on a once blue bridge that crossed that thin blue line. The 'Amery and Woodham show'.

The Premier, Bob Carr, relies on a militia. A gang of bikies and our Police Service, to show all of us he is no murderer. He should be taken to the task along with his partners in crime like Clive Small to account for those people who like my self have been maliciously assaulted and who have complained, without any service and those who cannot speak for themselves who were murdered, like Terry Falconer. Riot not planned: Palm Is leaders

Community leaders on Palm Island off north Queensland have rejected suggestions that Friday's riot was premeditated.

The community remains calm but tense, with police reinforcements sent to the island today.

The police station and courthouse were destroyed when residents went on a rampage, angered over the death of 36-year-old Cameron Doomadgee in police custody.

Nine people have now been charged with various offences in relation to the riot.

Police say he died after a scuffle, during which he and an officer fell onto concrete steps. [?]

Palm Island community councillor, Rosina Norman, says the riot was not planned.

"If it were, it would have happened from Monday because this started Monday," she said.

"We had a community meeting then the people went up to the police station and asked for the police to come out."

Premier Peter Beattie says the Crime and Misconduct Commission is investigating Mr Doomadgee's death.

North Queensland police say the crisis on Palm Island has now eased in the aftermath of yesterday's riot.

Indigenous community residents took to the streets after the release of an autopsy conducted on a man who died in police custody.

The autopsy showed that Cameron Doomadgee had broken ribs and died from a punctured lung in the watch-house last Friday.

Up to 300 islanders stormed the police station, setting fire to it with a petrol bomb. They also destroyed the police residence.

Fire officials trying to control the blaze were reportedly threatened by locals, some of whom were carrying knives and other weapons.

A fire truck was also destroyed.

Mr Doomadgee's cousin, Murrandoo Doomadgee, says he understands the anger in the local community.

"What we look upon with shame is the continued violence of police against young Aboriginal men and women," he said.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has sought to reassure Palm Islanders the death will be properly investigated and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson, who has flown to Townsville, says his officers will fully co-operate.

It is believed 60 police officers are on Palm Island trying to restore law and order.

Meanwhile, Queensland's coroner released a statement last night, promising an "open and thorough" inquest into Mr Doomadgee's death.

Michael Barnes says an initial report indicates there is no evidence to suggest that his injuries were caused by the "direct use of force." [?]

He says the pathologist believes they were consistent with Mr Doomadgee and another person falling onto a hard surface - such as the watch-house steps - during a struggle. [?]

Up to 50 armed police reinforcements were today being flown to the Aboriginal settlement after hundreds of angry residents stormed the police station and adjoining courthouse early this afternoon, setting fire to the buildings with a petrol bomb.

Residents "were believed" to have blocked the airstrip with cars to stop police reinforcements being flown from nearby Townsville.

Palm Island resident Nicky Bull said the situation was worse than during this year's Redfern riots in Sydney.

"There's smoke everywhere, the police station's just about burnt to the ground as it is, as well as the residence where the police live," she said.

The riot follows the release of a post-mortem examination of Cameron Doomadgee, 36, who died in custody last Friday.

The autopsy found the man had four broken ribs and died from a punctured lung.

Another resident, Nicky Willis, said, "The atmosphere over here at the moment is one that's full of anger because of what's come out of the coroner's report .

"It's one that's full of fear as well because there are a lot of good people that live on this land.

"There's a lot of elders that live here . . . and they are living in fear."

The Palm Island hospital has been locked down.
