The New South Wales Police Minister, John Watkins, says an independent investigation will be held into a fatal shooting by police in south-western Sydney last night. [?]

Police say they shot a man after he lunged at them with a knife at Greenacre.

Police were called to the scene of a fire in a unit on Waterloo Rd at around 7:20pm AEDT yesterday.

On arrival they found a 38-year-old man threatening fire officers with a 15-centimetre long knife.

Police say several witnesses saw them ask the man to drop the knife several times before using capsicum spray on him.

When he moved towards them they shot him several times in the torso.

But an independent witness claimed on CH/7 this morning, "They shot him twice in the legs. Then they shot him twice in the chest".

He later died in Bankstown Hospital.

The officers involved were taken to Bankstown police station for drug and alcohol testing.

Speaking at the scene last night, Superintendent Mick Plotecki called on any further witnesses to help with the investigation.

"We're doing a canvas of the area as we speak and we're looking on all the people in the area that have witnessed this to come forward so we can get what information they can provide," he said.

A critical incident team is now conducting an independent investigation?

Mr Watkins says a full police investigation has begun into the shooting and he will receive a briefing from police on the incident later today.

The internal investigation will be conducted by police from adjoining commands and the findings sent to the coroner?

Trust us we know best?

Mr Watkins has urged the public not to prejudge the outcome?

"The standard practice in these serious incidents is for officers from adjoining commands to come in and carry out that investigation to ensure that all proper procedures were followed," he said.

So much for independents!

The one that suppose to be autonomous according to Lord Denning. Where the Parliamentary Secretary can ask the commissioner of police to 'report' then sack him if he is not satisfied with such report.

Truth
Who is telling the truth? Well I guess Dr. Ed. Chadbourne or Mr. Peter Ryan may have the answer to that. Dr. Chadbourne sacked by Peter Ryan and more specifically in my view because he elected deputy commissioners Dave Madden and Andrew Scipione as the best men in the service in relation to his qualifications to make a recommendation in his capacity as human resources.That is if you believe that a Dr. can be corrupted.

Honesty
What is happening between the Police Service and politics is quite extraordinary at the moment. If stand over tactics don't work tell half the truth honestly and follow the example of sheep. Another word for it is sleaze, yeah. Another word for it is workplace harassment. Another word for it is bribing a Police Officer. Another word for it is misleading Parliament.

Israel admits UN ambulance claims propaganda...

The Israeli Army has admitted it was wrong to accuse the United Nations of letting its ambulances be used by Palestinian freedom fighters to transport Qassam rockets in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the Army admitted it was not certain that the object placed in the back of a UN-marked ambulance in the northern Gaza Strip was a rocket, as it had previously insisted and said its accusations were "made in haste".

"After a thorough review of the material, the nature of the object loaded on the vehicle cannot be determined with certainty. Thus, the determination that the object loaded was a Qassam rocket was too unequivocal and made in haste," the statement said.

Commenting on its rapid widespread distribution of the grainy footage shot from an Israeli drone, the Army said, "lessons learned will be implemented to prevent a recurrence of such an incident in the future".

A diplomatic storm broke out between Israel and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) earlier this month after the army released grainy footage of what it said was Palestinian freedom fighters loading a Qassam rocket into a vehicle with a UN logo clearly marked on the roof.

After studying the pictures, UNRWA chief Peter Hansen said the pictures showed nothing more than paramedics throwing a folded portable stretcher into the vehicle.

Speaking to the parliament's foreign affairs and defence committee early on Tuesday, the army's official spokeswoman Ruth Yaron also admitted, in slightly clearer language, that the assessment had been wrong.

"It is obvious today, after all the inquiries made into the question, that it wasn't a Qassam rocket," the web site of Israeli daily Haaretz quoted her as telling the committee.

In the affair's wake, Israel immediately lodged a strongly worded protest with the United Nations.

Several days later, a UN team arrived in Israel to investigate the allegations, which sparked a furious war of words that culminated in Israeli demands for Mr Hansen's dismissal on the grounds that he "hates Israel".

Mr Hansen lashed out at Israel in a letter sent to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, labelling the Israeli accusations as "malicious propaganda" that endangered the lives of UN staff in the Gaza Strip working under deadly conditions during an ongoing army raid into the area.

"It is appalling that, with the serious conflict now raging in the northern Gaza Strip, where UNRWA ambulances are operating in constant danger alongside those of other humanitarian agencies to try and save and transport scores of wounded Palestinians to hospital, the Government of Israel would put out such deliberately inciteful, false and malicious propaganda," Mr Hansen wrote.

Mr Hansen requested an immediate public retraction and apology from the Israeli Government.

But, after nearly a week of insisting the footage showed a militant rocket being loaded into the UN vehicle, Israeli officials last week acknowledged they might have been wrong and withdrew the clip from the official army web site.

GKCNN was unable to reach any UNRWA officials for comment on the public retraction of the allegations.

Dr Catherine Robinson

Catherine Robinson's research has sought an understanding of how homeless people manage the trauma of displacement and the ongoing struggle to connect body, place, self and community through the construction of home.

In the past she has worked with young homeless people in inner Sydney and conducted a major Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute research project on the dual contexts of homelessness and mental disorders. Currently her projects include research on the shortage of women's emergency accommodation in Western Sydney and a book exploring displacement in the context of homelessness.

As part of Vikings, more than 400 extra 10-hour flights for police helicopters, acting in support of ground forces, would be funded and the number of firearm and explosives detection dogs would be increased from 26 to 46.

The announcement follows the Opposition's pledge on Sunday to introduce laws aimed at catching the "Mr Bigs" of the underworld and stripping them of their illegally gained assets.

"We've got separate operations to catch the Mr Bigs, and that's based on police intelligence," he said. "This is about catching the Mr Big-enoughs. "And they're the people who are a danger to any of us catching a train, on a railway station."

The Opposition police spokesman, Andrew Tink, has repeatedly said a Coalition government would get rid of Vikings, which he describes as an inefficient and unproductive media stunt.

"The public has a clear choice between the Coalition's locally led and locally based beat police policy and the Carr Government's Operation Vikings, which is public relations driven."

Last week, the Police Association called on the Government to make a long-term commitment to fund Vikings - "the successful high-visibility policing strategy introduced by Commissioner [Ken] Moroney".

The association's president, Ian Ball, was concerned funding for Vikings had been guaranteed only until June, and estimated it would cost $20million over four years. "To maintain the great results achieved in reducing crime rates we need both the Government and the Opposition to state their support for Commissioner Moroney's strategy of high-visibility policing by committing to additional funding beyond June 2003," Mr Ball had said.

The Police Minister, Michael Costa, said: "For the Opposition to make NSW Police withdraw Operation Vikings would be sheer madness."

Most people I know don't buy the Daily Telegraph. Why? Because of the lies and propaganda purported by them.

The story goes that they bend over and Cop-it off the Police Service. If they don't they don't get all the stories first hand. Nor do they get work (advertising) off the Government unless they produce lies and propaganda as well.

So bend over, and cop this. I sent your paper articles in relation to the Loser Gang (bikies) in particular Rebells, Polair and off duty police working together.

I picked up your Saturday edition 6 April 2002 while sitting on a park bench.There it was a racist article in relation to a list of so called ethnic (labels) gangs in our schools. But I didn't see the Loser Gang the agents who sell heroin and guns and employ youths and children in our schools. I did not see anything in relation to the fact that the Police Service Green light these bikies and in fact work with them off duty.

Perhaps if you want to give out Blue Ribbons to police who die in the line of duty then tell us why the constable was driving in an unmarked Police vehicle. Then you can go on and hand out Red Ribbons to the fireman who died in the line of duty. Then you can hand out Crimson Ribbons to all the Children who died because the Police Service sold them heroin in the line of their Survival.

What about Purple Ribbons to all the Garbage collectors who are nocked down and killed by motorists in the line of their work. What about Green Ribbons to all those Prisoners set up incarcerated and killed in the line of their Survival.You can go on to hand out Black Ribbons to all those people Murdered by Police and Civilians alike.

Only then can you tie a Yellow Ribbon around the Old Oak Tree.

Then we wont end up with another hit squad purported to be required because of the so-called alarming guns culture.

Police who will spend there time stalking innocent citizens instead of policing. I might add what about real police work. Perhaps they could take over and thoroughly investigate unsolved murders.
