Redfern drug dealers: Who is Mr Big?

Police officer blames Redfern riot on heroin instead of a police pursuit? And who's the Koori junkie living on the hill with all the cash?

A senior Redfern police officer says a flourishing illegal drug trade is the main cause of problems in Redfern's Aboriginal community, known as The Block.

But just like Kings Cross it doesn't get cleaned up and the Mr Bigs are living like pigs. Ha ha. That's right someone supplies and someone accumulates large sums of money and someone has targeted Redfern and allows it to flourish there.

As Michael Jackson would say "don't blame it on sunshine, don't blame it on moonlight, don't blame it on good times. Blame it on the boogie."

In a submission to the Redfern riot parliamentary inquiry, Sergeant Paul Huxtable estimates there is an annual $50 million heroin trade in the inner-Sydney suburb.

But he doesn't know where the money is? Hey Paul? No idea at all! Paul. Someone gives the green light and that's why the shit never gets cleaned up.

Sergeant Huxtable says the growth in the heroin trade is behind ongoing conflict between police and Aboriginal residents. "I'll admit there are other issues involved but I think the overriding issue is the antagonism held towards police in order to protect that heroin trade," he said.

"That is fuelled by certain people making big money and when instances like the tragic death of TJ Hickey arise, it's just a great opportunity for them to use fuel for the fire."

Well it still doesn't mean children should be pursued to death does it?

And who would or could arrange for the growth in the heroin trade to cause a conflict between the police and Aboriginal residence? I know! The Koori on the Hill with all the cash $$$$$ they're probably living in a mansion? A couple of high rollers perhaps. Maybe the police could catch them down the Casino in the high rollers room with $20,000 dollar chips?

Police Minister John Watkins says while he has not read the submission, it is clear there have been social, criminal and drug problems in The Block. "Police have been working in that very difficult environment for a long period of time and we need to do it better," he said.

"It's quite clear we need to do it better, that's why I'm hopeful the Upper House inquiry will point to some new solutions that will lift the burden on New South Wales police."

But NSW police are not giving the green light as they did in Kings Cross, Cabramatta, Greenacre, Punchbowl, Campsie and Lakemba to make sure that the drugs flourish?

Premier Bob Carr says he agrees with Sergeant Huxtable's basic proposition.

"I think he's right, I substantially agree with him," he said.

"I think the problem at Redfern is the corrosive, awful problem of heroin dependency rather than racism.

"That awful white powder heroin that produces dependency is undermining the Aboriginal community there, it's not racism."

Oh no, not the obvious racism and police pursuit and awful cops giving a green light? Cops don't do that do they Bob?

This is an Appalling statement by Carr. What about allowing cops intervention and criminalising the problem instead of community building and empowerment of elders in the community to resolve some of the issues and health problems.

Racism is a symptom no doubt because of the lack of respect and empathy for the community who reside at Redfern regardless of their creed or colour. In addition this type of PR stunt could also be seen as another example of lack of empathy and initiative by the Carr Labor Government and a direct attack to whitewash the parliamentary inquiry.

PR stunts by the Carr Labor Government to hide the real issues are not new. The problem is how this can influence the community that ends up with a bigger problem down the track because the real issues like the Mr Bigs of the drug trade and racism from bent cops who may be sick of dealing with fallout instead of dealing with the problems at Redfern. This was a blatant attack on more than one front with the Premier Carr, the Minister Watkins and the cop Paul Huxtable.

Huxtable is trying to get away with blaming the Redfern riot on a drug problem when indeed it had to do with the very death of a young Aboriginal boy being chased by police or at least thinking he was being chased by police. Hickey so terrified he'd get caught he was impaled on a fence.

A parliamentary inquiry will begin today into policing the inner-Sydney suburb of Redfern.

In February, 17-year-old Thomas Hickey died after coming off his bicycle and being impaled on a fence, sparking a riot in the area.

His family blamed police for his death, saying officers had been chasing him at the time.

Police have denied the allegation and alleged 40 police were hurt in the riot.

The Upper House inquiry will examine policing strategies and resources as well as the provision of services and programs in the Redfern community.

It will also examine proposals for the future of an area known as The Block.

More than 60 submissions have been received and an interim report is expected by the end of July.

By Junkie Bill 18 May 04

THE CHICKEN: It's one thing to attack corrosive dependency but another to find out who is getting the proceeds of the crime and making heroin available.

THE EGG: If heroin causes social problems then we need to prevent it from spreading. How do you stop it spreading? Supply not demand. I agree with Mr Watkins about the need to do it better. Perhaps under the heading of, " That's why you get paid". And example would be if people were running down pedestrians in their cars. I wonder if blaming people for crossing the road would solve the problem? Perhaps no matter how much care was taken to cross the road you'd still get run down.

THE HEN HOUSE: Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the Block? To get to the Penthouse? To get to Parliament House? Or to get away from the police!

Was Thomas Hickey payback?

Yesterday it was alleged police faced a potentially deadly confrontation with locals of a redfern housing block last week when a gun was grabbed from an officer's holster and held to his stomach.

[Was Thomas Hickey the payback? The answer my friends is blowing in the wind. This is exactly the type of motive that would lead police to kill.]

Police say they have firm leads about the identities of the ringleaders of the "mob", which rioted in Redfern.

As newly-formed strike force Time Piece [pay back?] is an attempt to single out dissenters and began reviewing video footage of Sunday night's riots, the damage bill allegedly was set to top $1 million (to the highest bidder).

The Redfern-based police task force is reviewing about 20 hours of footage from the riots, including footage shot by police, media crews and members of the public, plus closed circuit TV from Redfern railway station.

The video footage [allegedly] captures a group of about a dozen alleged ringleaders who [allegedly] spurred on the youths who were throwing molotov cocktails and hurling paving stones at police.

Some adults [allegedly] captured on the footage are [allegedly] known to police.

And, while an accurate calculation of the cost of the damage caused by the riot that was caused by the death in custody, is yet to be determined, early estimates have put the fire damage to the railway station alone at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Task force Time Piece [pay back?] commander, Detective Inspector Darren Bennett, said his team's first priority would be arresting and charging the adult ringleaders.

[Singling people out and attacking them separately.]

He said video surveillance alone was not enough to identity someone in court and police would use a variety of investigative procedures to confirm exactly who was involved.

[Like noble cause corruption and there is a pretty good example in this state.]

Bennett, "We're confident we're going to find the people responsible, but it's a long process."

Report: About 11am last Thursday a senior police officer had his gun pointed at him after being surrounded by a gang of 15 people.

The officer and his partner struggled at least three times to get a distress call out but their radios were not working properly.

The incident occurred when two officers went to Eveleigh Lane to arrest a man in his 50s who was wanted for breach of bail. The man ran when he saw the police, who pursued and arrested him without a struggle.

Then around 15 locals surrounded the officers and tried to pull the arrested man away from them. One officer was pushed to the ground and dragged by three men as onlookers shouted, "get their guns".

Members of the group made a grab for both officers' weapons. The constable managed to keep his firearm, but an unidentified man grabbed the sergeant's gun from his holster and pointed the muzzle into the officer's stomach. The sergeant hit the man and grabbed his weapon back. Police then called a "signal one" the most serious call for backup but it allegedly was not received by the radio room.

The officers, neither of who were injured, eventually dragged the suspect away from the mob and arrested him.

According to two residents, police pursuing criminals routinely seek them in the redfern housing block.

"Once they've come into the housing block it's like there is no law in this country," the residents said.

Rolling the legal system for him after the fact, just like his predecessor Roger the dodger Rogerson.

Terry murdered in custody.
