Latham calls on Anderson to resign

Federal Opposition Leader Mark Latham has called on Nationals leader John Anderson to resign after the defeat of Larry Anthony in his northern New South Wales electorate.

Mr Anthony yesterday conceded defeat to Labor in Richmond, but the party is confident of gaining two extra Senate seats.

Mr Latham says during the election campaign, Mr Anderson promised he would step down as leader if the Nationals lost any seats.

"In the campaign Mr Anderson had a lot of lectures for other people about values, he's now got to practice the most important value in public life, honesty with the Australian people and fulfil his promise to stand down," he said.

"How can he say in the campaign he'd stand down as National Party leader if they lose a seat, well they've now lost a seat, he's got to actually stand down and fulfil his promise, otherwise it's a broken promise to the Australian people."

That's because politicians especially the one's in power lie! As if Mark Latham didn't know that....

Minor party could decide two NSW seats

The preferences of the minor party, Liberals For Forests, could play a part in the Federal Government losing two seats in New South Wales that remain in doubt.

Liberals for Forests directed preferences away from the sitting Coalition members in the seats of Parramatta and Richmond.

The party has alleged that one of its helpers was bashed by supporters of Parramatta Liberal MP Ross Cameron at a polling booth on Saturday, although no formal complaint has been made to police.

On election night, the Liberal and National parties voiced concern over the Liberals for Forests how-to-vote card preferencing Labor.

But the Parramatta candidate for Liberals for Forests Mark Guest says few people would have followed his preference suggestions.

"I'm a bit sceptical that someone followed our how-to-vote without knowing what they were doing in sufficient numbers to actually change the candidate," he said.

"My own view is that a lot of Liberals may well have voted for us and didn't want to vote for Ross Cameron."

He spoke with a 90-year-old local resident before being interrupted during a press conference by a local worker who dropped a bag of cheese at the Prime Minister's feet.

"On behalf of the local working class people this country I'm going to present this cheese to you because you and your mates are past your use-by date and you'll be looking for jobs, go Labor," he said.

"Okay, I think we know who he's voting for," Howard replied.
