GREEN REVOLUTION, REVOLUTION THINK!

WITH SUSTAINABLE FOREST INDUSTRY$$$ MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES.

$800m forest policy SUSTAINABLE: ALP

Federal ALP''s Leader Mark Latham's forest policy with a promise to protect Tasmania's old growth forests and rainforest is a revolution. REVOLUTION THINK?

The package, announced by Mr Latham in Hobart, includes $800 million to increase new job opportunities and help put the forest industry on a more sustainable basis.

Who said money doesn't grow on trees as long as you cooperate with the planet many resources are still untapped and those who suffer from doing things the same old way have to move 'outside the lodge' and start using their 'log' in order to survive.

Mr Latham says if Labor is elected it will appoint a panel of experts to assess Tasmania's high conservation forests, including the Tarkine and the Styx to determine whether they need protecting

The panel will report by September next year and until then some relief, there will be an immediate end to clearing of native vegetation, and no extension of any existing logging operations.

In a meeting with timber workers and the industry, Mr Latham said he was committed to a sustainable forest industry, promising an $800 million fund to look at new job opportunities.

"We're serious about conservation and the protection intent of the policy, but we're also serious about the $800 million investment to preserve the jobs," he said.

Mr Latham promising his policy will have no net affect on employment in the industry.

"No, this is not buying out jobs to put people on long-term welfare," he said.

"This is upgrading of skills and technology, modernising an industry that obviously needs greater investment in technology and skills to survive."

Mr Latham says the policy unveiled yesterday will not affect the Regional Forest Agreements in the rest of Australia.
