Australian Greens leader Bob Brown says the party's star candidate in Tasmania, Christine Milne may miss out on a seat in the Senate.
Senator Brown says that while the winner of the sixth Tasmanian Senate seat will not be known for another 12 days, preference flows are not favourable to the Greens.
On election night, Ms Milne had 13.4 per cent of the primary vote, less than a percentage point needed to secure the seat.
But her share of the vote has since fallen to 12.7 per cent.
Senator Brown says Family First's candidate Jacquie Petrusma is the beneficiary of preferences from Labor, the Liberal Party and three others.
"The position as it stands is totally line ball, it could go either way," he said.
"The reality is that Christine could lose, she also could win.
"We are not going to know until Wednesday week."
Senator Brown says many Labor and Democrats voters have unwittingly supported Family First by voting above-the-line on the Senate ballot ticket.
"You get machinations going on there whereby people don't preference in order of like-minded parties but instead preference according to what they think is going to give them political advantage," he said.
"On this occasion the Democrats and the Labor Party broke with a more honourable tradition in Tasmania and said we're going to preference this right-wing party before the Greens."
