Would CCTV be more effective in a war-zone?

Prime loser john hoWARd says he is impressed with how effective closed circuit television cameras have been in identifying suspects in the London bombings.

Even though one of the causes of the London bombings has to be the illegal and degrading war on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Real television was effective in identifying hoWARd as one of the war criminals but it wasn't as effective in prosecuting him, nor did it stop the bombings in London and Madrid?

hoWARd says he will consider introducing a similar system on Australia's transport networks.

But it seems no matter what hoWARd does that is wrong he's not going to take any responsibility for it, no matter how wrong it is? He thinks he can mistreat the International community and just back up those misgivings with tighter security and over your dead body.

So do we need to install CCTV in the war-zone next time there is an illegal and degrading war on a sovereign nation state? Will that be more effective in not only identifying the offenders but also prosecuting them as well? Could that also prevent others who have been offended by these illegal and degrading war crimes against humanity from blowing us up on the bus and train at home?

Well prevention is better than cure and if john hoWARd's proposition for one of those security measures is taking a photo with CCTV, after the terrorist has blown people up, most people would say that measure really wasn't very effective at all, especially if their own life depended on it!

But don't worry he may get a photo of the offender so your relatives, friends and colleagues may some day find out who it was that blew you up.

The prime loser's trip to the British capital has been dominated by the bomb attacks.

He says one of the things he has learnt during his visit is how useful modern technology has been in tracking down suspects in this weeks bungled attacks.

"I have been impressed with the apparent value of surveillance cameras, this is something that has hit me very hard is just how effective these cameras have been and how valuable they might be, and they should certainly be considered in the Australian context," he said.

Well those surveillance cameras have spelt it out for the community as well. The community should know how effective they are at taking pictures of bombers before they blow themselves and other innocent people to bits, and how ineffective they can be at prosecuting the real war criminals. Especially if the bombers are dead and the war criminals remain in power and continue to occupy sovereign nations.

So if CCTV or for that matter any TV only 'identifies' and not 'prosecutes' those offenders, who have been identified, and are not dead and those who are war criminals and imperialists that remain in power? If that is case what is the good of it when it comes to preventing terrorism?

Better not to offend the International community or prosecute those identified offenders that are still alive to face the music in relation to their offending behavior.

hoWARd has held several meetings with the Australian team of police and transport officials sent to London after the July 7 attacks but the police he needs to talk are at the Hague.

Australian police should be assisting the International Community by arresting hoWARd and his cronies, charging them with war crimes against humanity and sending them off to the Hague to face the music before other people get blown up for calling for peace and being totally ignored!

A Sydney court is deciding whether some evidence in the committal hearing of an 'alleged' terrorism suspect should be heard in a 'closed court'. The Federal Government is concerned about breaches of 'reverse surveillance'.

Sydney Central Local Court yesterday began a committal hearing for 34-year-old architect Faheen Khalid Lodhi.

He is facing nine charges and is accused of planning a major terrorist attack on Sydney defence sites and the electricity grid using downloads off the internet and having 100 rolls of toilet paper to wipe his arse after low level bombs and farts.

Lodhi, one of Australia's most politicised prisoners, was driven to and from court in a purpose built toilet and watched over by perverts.

If the suppression order were enforced, it would be a landmark ruling and a travesty of justice at common law. Corruption of our central government in the context of the Federal Crimes Act being applied to an alleged terrorism 'suspect'.

Lodhi's legal team have opposed the application, saying it was unacceptable that they were not given notice that it would be made.

After reading a confidential document supporting the Government's application, lawyers for Lodhi said it was clear there was evidence they were yet to receive that they needed to cross-examine witnesses.

Two witnesses were also scheduled to give evidence via satellite from prison in the United States? But the prosecution said US prison authorities were not allowing the pair to appear until the conclusion of their own trial next year.

That prompted Lodhi's lawyer, Phillip Boulten SC, to claim the US Government was improperly influencing the proceedings.

"The American Government is deciding what witnesses will be called and when they will be called," he said.

Magistrate Michael Price will continue to hear the application today.

He is also expected to rule whether the media can reveal the general nature of the new evidence?

Earlier this year, Lieutenant Colonel Lance Collins claimed access to intelligence was deliberately blocked while he was on assignment in East Timor in 1999.

A report issued by the Inspector General of Intelligence and Security has backed Colonel Collins' allegations.

Inspector General Ian Carnell says access to vital intelligence databases had been turned off because of security concerns.

But the Federal Government says the shutdown was not an instruction of the director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO), Frank Lewincamp.

Senator Hill says the investigation found the flow of intelligence was limited, but on reasonable security grounds.

The Australian Defence Association has called for the Government to release an unclassified version of the report, while the Opposition has accused the Government of deliberately sitting on the report, releasing details after Parliament closed down for the year.

Senator Hill says while he intends, in due course, to release the unclassified version of the report, his hands are currently tied.

"The matter is not yet complete but I've released what I can so far," he said.

"I would want to, in due course, release an unclassified version of that. But as there are still legal and administrative processes taking place it would be premature and inappropriate to do it at the moment."

But Labor's spokesman for homeland security, Robert McClelland, says that does not cut it.

"It is a cover-up and it's just not good enough," he said.

Mr McClelland thinks there was a major blunder which could have cost Australian lives and he says heads should roll.

The Australian Defence Association (ADA) also wants more information to be made public.

"There may be legitimate security grounds not to release parts of the report, but certainly if they can't release the whole report, they should release certain aspects of it," ADA spokesman Neil James said.

* The police (and anyone else) can track your every movement while you have your phone switched on,

* But don't be concerned, "If you've nothing to hide, you've nothing to worry about."

This all seems reasonable to many citizens, who genuinely feel that they have nothing to hide. They consider that the surveillance is not directed at them, but only at the "bad guys" in society.

However, that's not true. Anyone who thinks it through soon realises that such surveillance is a significant intrusion on citizen's privacy."

Today's line from the war criminal and his cronies Mick Keelty: (AFP): "Police need greater powers to force terror suspects to say who they work with and what they know about planned attacks." "If society really expects law enforcement to prevent and disrupt terrorist activity, then we need to look at other models that are working or that are under development in other parts of the world," he said.

"The AFP's overseas counterparts have a greater ability to force suspects to provide information about planned attacks."

"These include questions such as the person's identity and movements, what the person knows about a recent explosion or another recent incident endangering life and what they know about a person killed or injured in a recent explosion or incident," he said.

Mr Lothar " But don't let officials and propagandists think for you. Think for yourself. Think for your family, think for their security, think for their future, think for their freedom."

Talk Straight About Surveillance

The prevailing debates about surveillance and individual privacy are unidirectional, they all lead towards citizens and away from governments. Nobody ever suggests surveillance of police by citizen groups. Nobody ever argues that, "Since the AFP works for the people, it can have nothing to hide from them. Therefore, let us see the files. Give us the computer passwords.

Let us into the AFP offices, we own them anyway. Don't we?" If Australia was a real democracy, none of these requests would seem strange. But, the fact is that Australia is only a pretend democracy, as are its allies; the US and Great Britain. So, requests of this nature can be expected to be described by authorities of these elected governments as, "outrageous", "impractical", "dangerous", and of course, "not in the national interest."

It is up to ordinary people to raise the level of debate about the undemocratic surveillance practices of the many faceless and unaccountable agents who make daily intrusions on individual privacy, and about the apologists and propagandists for the War on Terror who applaud every new attack on human rights and freedoms as "prudent" or "necessary". If there is no discussion of reverse surveillance in the national media, create it on the streets on a citizen to citizen basis.

If nobody is talking about the outrageous assaults on privacy and human rights embodied in the new anti terrorist acts forced through US, UK and Australian legislatures, start talking about it to your neighbours and friends. If you are apprehended for behaving in a suspicious manner, make sure that the subject of your "disloyal" dialogue comes out in court.

There is nothing inherently wrong with arguing for an overview process covering the files of covert agencies, or other government departments for that matter. Such reverse surveillance could be performed by randomly selected citizens audit teams. That idea won't be popular with the Feds, but discussion of the proposal can't easily be prevented in a society that is declared to be democratic. If such discussions are to be outlawed, secretive states can no longer pretend to be democratic, and they must show their true colours to their citizens, and the world."

Argue For Reverse Surveillance - It IS Democratic! Code breaking, and subsequent surveillance of military communications transmitted by the German and Japanese forces, played a major part in the victory of the British and US forces in World War II. As a consequence, the old allies continue to maintain major systems of surveillance, under the UKUSA agreement. To this day, the US National Security Agency (NSA) is the largest employer of mathematicians and cryptographers on the planet.

But their surveillance now intrudes on the private lives, commercial confidences, and intellectual property rights of all citizens.

Not only those people living within the territories of countries that are signatories to UKUSA are affected. The secret SIGINT community spies on all or humanity, on a 24/7 basis.

It is possible to argue that this constant, all pervading surveillance is in the "national interest" of the British or US governments and their "owners", (but not the interests of ordinary citizens). However, nobody can soundly argue that such spying is in the wider interests of humanity.

When the surveillance systems of UKUSA are used to steal knowledge, dominate trade, create artificial scarcity, and maintain poverty and economic control, they serve to refute the notion that the governments that deploy them are either free or democratic.

Reverse surveillance, on the other hand, is inherently democratic. The whole basis of democracy is that elected representatives act for their constituents, and that they run accountable and transparent administrations. There is nothing in the democratic contract that permits covert surveillance of citizens by government agencies, nor is there any understanding that it is acceptable for "our" governments to bug "their" technological developments and steal or suppress what they choose, to keep scarcity and poverty going in the world.

All such surveillance activities are out of step with democracy, and it is entirely legitimate for citizens of any nominally democratic state to insist of their right of inspection and elimination of surveillance systems. All agencies of government, both overt and covert, come under this remit of citizens in a free society. And I guess that includes Governments who want more, more, more and even more powers to screw citizens over for political purposes.
