US trade deficit hits record high

The United States has posted a record third quarter trade deficit of $US164.7 billion ($210 billion).

The increase in imports in the third quarter reflected strong demand for crude oil as well as industrial supplies, materials and capital goods.

The latest snapshot of the US trade situation, though, was actually better than economists had anticipated.

However, Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan has warned the bloated current account deficit could threaten the economy by killing off the foreign appetite for investment in the US.

Some private economists believe the falling value of the US dollar is already reflecting those investor fears.

US trade representative Clayton Yuetter says the trade deficit will continue to put downward pressure on the US dollar.

"We're still under some stress with a large current account deficit," he said.

Traders said there was a "relief rally" today for the US dollar after yesterday's sharp sell-off. Last month capital inflows into the US were well short of funding its current account deficit.

Economic Future Predicted 2003

Change Rapidly But Not Cataclysmically [288]

That the old economic order is destroying itself, and taking the whole world towards a replay of the Argentinean crisis on a global scale, is no secret in financial circles. It's just not featured on the 6 o'clock news or the pages of the mass-media newspapers. The following excerpt from the August 12, 2004, edition of the Dow Theory Letters, a financial newsletter by Richard Russell in the USA, captures what the people inside the economic and financial sectors know and accept. It's scary and it's true.

* "... In the end, the US is fated to drown in liabilities, and in the end the dollar will fall to the point where it will no longer be accepted as the world's reserve currency. But until then, the world, really the Asians, will "play the game" in which they will continue to accept and accumulate dollars.

Why are they doing this? they're continuing to accept dollars because this process allows them to continue to sell their products to the US. Yes, it's a game. Yes, it can't go on forever. Yes, the US and the dollar will finally drown in liabilities. Yes, this is ultimately what the bear market is all about. And yes, there really seems to be nothing that will reverse this process."

* "The whole system is obviously doomed, but the world's politicians don't think in terms of "doom." Doom is in the future, and politicians are concerned with "now," and the next election.

There is no need for anyone to overthrow the old order based on capitalism. The societal flaws and lethal memes that are associated with takerism and capitalism are already well on the way to destroying the empires of the industrial age, New knowledge, new technology, and new thinking are helping to accelerate the process. Time is running out for the old order.

Our concern, as leaver-givers, needs to be with the world beyond the demise of capitalism. We need to have a social and economic logic, and a system of transition, in place well before the looming meltdown. We must have the rudiments of a new civilization and a new society ready for people to join when their old world fails them.

This is the most important work and thinking that we can ever do on behalf of our fellow beings.

Go forward in peace. And always remember the line from Gravity's Rainbow:

"If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about the answers."

Lethal Notions of Capitalism [282]

Wealth creation and economic prosperity are, under capitalism, based on principles of competition and survival of the fittest. The phenomenon of capitalism, which is scarcely two hundred years old, it is grounded in these dominant ideas. The notions are not strictly memes, because they are not ingrained in all members of the society, but they are potentially lethal. Not only can corporations fail because they can't adapt to discontinuous change and economic abundance; whole nations can be impoverished unnecessarily and societies can wither and die of anger, recriminations and blame for corporate and other institutional misdeeds and collapses.

Australia: The gospel according to Farr

Malcolm Farr this morning in Sydney has written an article about the opening of the ALP national conference designed to showcase Mark Latham with a speech on values and opportunities.

This is not Farr fronting his first article on an ALP conference for the Daily Telegraph, Farr will no doubt use the next three days to outline his articles on what Mark Latham will do as a Prime Minister?

But beware Malcolm, Mark Latham's a bit smarter than that!

For starters they have a firm agreement with the government.

That the Liberal party own Federal Parliament and Labor own the States?

Those on the right stand to profit in the neo-liberal ideology. In fact they own the Australia party and this is what this is really all about Malcolm.

But you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

So how do they sell it? That's what this conference is all about Malcolm, for starters the $11,000 a table will draw in a short list of the rich right wing factions to help foster large bank accounts, just like joining the club before you actually get shares in Australia.

The Libs sell off the country to the US including US bases on Australian soil, under the guise of training camps, then they have back up for their plan.

In return they get a Free Trade Agreement that will boost their profit margins at the expense of the peasants.

The object is to line pockets and who cares what person or organisation is labelled as a terrorist. They're not getting thrown in the bin and stored when the shit hits the fan. It's the peasants who die from the struggle of life making sacrifices for their country.

In what will be seen as an echo of the Un-Australian Newspaper articles about, [war criminal], honest John Howard's Government's policies, Farr will probably say I will urge Australians to be more community minded and volunteer for more community activities.

Farr has most likely an expectation that Mark Latham will flesh out his concept of a "ladder of opportunity", beginning with his opening speech on "Enduring Labor Values" because he's heard it all before.

So why is Farr the Chief Political reporter at the Telegraph? Perhaps because he's read the Gospel according to Mark! One wonders?

Perhaps there is no one else at the Telegraph that likes the job as Chief political reporter for the lowest of the low corporate media?

According to the conference agenda sent to Farr, Labor will have a record 400 delegates attending but the conference has been trimmed back from five days. At least that's what they told Farr.

Labor thought that would wind him up to give them maximum coverage of the ALP conference.

How's that for values and opportunities! Latham's a man of his word. Not like that lying Howard.

Farr will be expecting Vigorous debates on policies for asylum seekers, industry and trade.

But Farr will report that, factional negotiations over the past week have eliminated contentious matters, which might have disrupted the process of selling Latham as the next national leader.

How else can you climb the ladder of success? If not in a positive way? I mean you don't hang out your dirty washing in public and expect to get opportunities do you?

Just like Bob Carr Mark Latham intends to publish his ideas as well, with books like,

"Values and opportunities" Climb the ladder of success.

"Enduring Labor Values" How to be more community minded and volunteer for more community activities"

You see Latham won't need Malcolm Farr's article. So get that into you Malcolm. He can do this himself and do a better job explaining!

Like this morning he will be introduced by party president Carmen Lawrence for what probably will be his third standing ovation in two days.

The first came yesterday when Latham spoke at the election launch of Queensland's Labor Premier Peter Beattie in Brisbane.

The second was last night at a central Sydney hotel, where guests paid up to $11,000 a table to help raise money for his election campaign.

And at the Queensland function, he gave a taste of his conference agenda by pledging to work with states on education and health.

By criticising Howard's attack on values taught in some public schools and by reminding everyone about Howard's lying and the fact that he does not lead by example.

Who's leading by example?

Latham gives you this guarantee, as prime minister, he won't be sitting on the sidelines, a negative, whingeing, carping commentator like the Daily Telegraph, The Un-Australian Newspaper and John Howard taking pot-shots at government schools.

He won't be starting wars and blowing people to bits for no good reason, like Howard.

In fact Latham intends to give all his preferences to the Greens, if they get up this time around, because of his colleague, Simon Crean's hopeless opposition to Howard this past year.

The Prime Minister yesterday maintained his criticism, accusing public schools of teaching arguments against the war in Iraq.

The tactic is "fear and terror" at all material times Howard wants Australian's to live in fear. How diabolical in terms of winning an election.

Doesn't he know that to 'live with fear is a life half lived'? Whoops, Latham shouldn't give you any more of his current ideas? That would make another good book?

Howard said, "The teacher unions a year ago encouraged teachers to discuss the war on Iraq in the classroom that was code for attacking the Government's position."

But Latham doesn't want to offend, [war criminal], George Bush. He just doesn't want to be put on the arse licker tag like Howard.

Sorry I withdraw that!

Actually George Bush is Latham's favourite Martian. Accept Latham just doesn't see eye to eye on some things like, "weapons of mass distraction" or "preventive strikes" against other nations etc. Or "axis of demons". People the neocons think may become a threat somewhere down the track, unless Bush wipes them out first?

Remember at all material times, Mark Latham is a man his word and he would never go back on anything he believed, unless of course his position as leader of the ALP meant he had to be seen to be trying to save this country from the wrath of Howard.

Only then could Labor create the illusion, in the grand scheme of things, that they don't really own Australia or have some conspiracy to sell it off and make huge profits, instead of nurturing nature and promoting community values.

Howard said, "I'm not saying they should have been promoting the Government's position. What I'm saying is they have a particular responsibility not to use the classroom for that kind of thing."

NSW Teacher's Federation Maree O'Halloran denied a political line had been pushed and said the curriculum for both public and private schools had included an examination of war.

Not a bad lesson? That this is the "Coalition of the Killing's resource war's in the Middle East" and the "War on Liberty."

A STRUGGLE ON TWO FRONTS: PRISONS & IMPERIALIST WAR

Should we examine "wars" at school?

Should we examine "wars if our leader promotes wars", at school?

Should we examine "preventive strikes on our neighbours", at school?

Should we examine "preventive strikes on our neighbours, if our Prime Minister promotes it", at school?

Should we examine "whether our Prime Minister should lie", at school?

Should we examine "whether our Prime Minister should lie, if that is what he does continually, at school?

Is that the Westminster System?

Re: Junee Correctional Centre

Dear Mr McDermott,

I contacted Junee Correctional Centre at 10:25 AM on 26 February 03.

I asked if Mr W P was in the Jail because I received a return to sender after I mailed our client. The person I spoke to said that Mr W P was in the Jail but would not give me his location ie wing.

I asked if Mr C K was in the Jail because I received a return to sender after I mailed our client. The same person said that Mr C K was in the jail but would not give me his location ie wing.

I asked for the identification of the person I was speaking to and was told that I was not entitled to that information. I needed to verify the call and asked for a name or number to register my call because I was asked to get those details by my coordinator.

The person refused to identify themselves either by name or number. I asked to be transferred to a senior person and was refused.

The person I spoke to then hung up the phone.

I contacted Liz from your office (Ombudsman) shortly thereafter and was told by her that firstly she was unsure if the person at Junee Correctional Centre had to give me any name or number so I could verify the call I had made to them. I am dissatisfied with the result of not being able to identify the person I spoke to in relation to being able to verify the call I made.

Liz asked me to write to you in relation to what I should expect when I contact a private prison in terms of verification and identity of the person I am speaking to. The person I spoke to insisted that she was not a public servant and did not have to comply with my request, as she is an employee of a private corporation.

I am dissatisfied with the result. Can you please confirm my expectations as soon as possible? Are there these obligations as public servants, and whether these are continued obligations for a private prison?

By Who Am I? 26 Feb 03
