'A Nice Day Out' From Risdon Prison

Arranged for maximum-security prisoner 43637 Trustrum, Thomas Edward, by Justice Pierre W Slicer, Tasmania's Supreme Court human-rights an social-justice crusader.

Prisoner Trustrum - age 73: At about 8am on my two nice days out arranged by former solicitor (now judge) Mr Pierre Slicer, on 4 May and 15 June this year, the yard-officer informed me that I was 'going to court'.

A 'yard' is a big wire cage containing about 40 cells and around 60-70 prisoners (half of the 3mtr-square cells are shared). There are six big wire cages altogether holding around 500 prisoners.

I was then marched form my cage by a guard, to what is called the 'reception centre', where prisoners ordinary cloths are stored in small' shoeboxes' for between 12-months and 30 years.

There is no similarity between Risdon prison's ugly little 'reception centre' and a real reception-centre on the outside.

Prisoners going on a nice day out to court or the Royal Hobart hospital can choose whether they wish to go in their prison track-suit and boots -- or in their crumpled suit and used shirt stored in their shoebox.

The big prison laundry is next to the ugly little 'reception centre' -- but prisoners are NOT ALLOWED to go on their nice days out in fresh, clean cloths.

Either way, you are then instructed to STRIP OFF and bend over, to allow your anus to be checked for concealed crowbars, cranes or helicopters. Your underpants and socks are 'shaken out' and your shoes or boots are peed in (correction -- peered in).

After you have dressed and stood upright again, you are handcuffed and bent over again to scramble and slither into the low prison van (without using your hands, because you are handcuffed) which takes you on your nice day out to court or hospital.

The inside of the small van is based on the design of a sardine-tin. The floor and two bench seats along each side are of shiny painted sheet-metal. There is nothing to 'hold onto' (even if you were not in handcuffs). This means prisoners are thrown around when the van is moving.

The sardine-tin usually carries three or four prisoners at a time on their nice days out to and from court -- but up to eight at a squeeze. The vehicle is also used for carrying sick or injured prisoners to and from the Royal Hobart hospital -- in handcuffs.

Once the guards have locked the bent-over, handcuffed prisoners in the sardine-tin, they get in the driver section; which is a separate compartment. This often causes prisoners anxiety as the guards cannot see or hear them -- and if the cheap old van were ever to collide and burst into flames, the prisoners would be BURNED ALIVE in handcuffs, as the fuel-tank is under their locked door!

(Prisoner Trustrum had noted on tv on several occasion after being jailed that prisoners and terrorists in Third World countries are often transported in small modern coachers. But in will obviously be many years before the Tasmanian government can afford the luxury Spirit of Tasmania Three ferry - which sails between Sydney and Tasmania mostly empty- and a small coach for Risdon's 500 prisoners.)

On arrival at court on your nice days out, you are marched to the cells below in your handcuffs and locked in, until your case is to be heard. Or you are marched through the Royal Hobart hospital (in handcuffs) if you are sick or injured. Or you are handcuffed to a stretcher or trolley.

After you nice day out in court or hospital, you are handcuffed and bent over again, to climb into the sardine-tin without using you hands (which are handcuffed) where you spend the next 20 minutes - or two hours if you are at Launceston - PRAYING that the old tin without springs will not collide with anything and burst into flames.

Eventually your nice day out in court or hospital in handcuffs, in a crumpled suit and dirty shirt, comes to an end as you arrive back at the ugly little 'reception centre' next to the big prison laundry.

Your crumpled suit and dirty shirt are thrown back in the shoebox again; ready for your next nice day out.

Prisoners at Hobart's Risdon prison say they have taken over the jail and are holding 10 guards hostage.

A prisoner, who says he is Conway Richardson, called the ABC claiming he was in the reception area with other prisoners after taking over the area this afternoon

The caller said most prisoners' were in the main yard of the jail and had taken about 10 screws hostage.

He said prisoners wanted Tasmanian Attorney-General Judy Jackson sacked and opposition justice spokesman Michael Hodgman to attend the prison.

"We want to get the point across - if they want to come in and gas us and all that, they're stupid to their own hostages - they've got their own kind in here," said, Mr Richardson.

Asked if the prisoners were armed, he said, "I don't have to tell you if I'm armed or not".

"We're here in prison because some of us have committed a crime but the Department of Corrective Services commits crimes against us everyday," prisoner Richardson said.

By the time the ombudsperson deals with your complaint you'll be defeated and War criminal's John Howard and Philip Ruddock will be on a pension at taxpayers expense.

That is unless they are taken to the Hague for their war crimes against humanity first.

What we really require is despot laws for Howard and his cronies. People in this country that are morally bankrupt should not be in a position of power. And people like McMillan who cover up for them are no better than they are.

There is a gap all right between the dog box...And the end of the leash...around the ombudsman's neck.

But the greatest gap is between the citizens, Ombudsman's powers, and the draconian legislation.

The only way to have accountable terrorism laws is to repeal them. Or defeat them on appeal to the High Court, which may strike out the legislation somewhere down the track.

Those people directly effected need to take out a civil damages claim against the government but you may need a 'lawyer with the will' and a heap of money for that.

Is the Ombudsman going to do that? I don't think so!

No-Smacking Day for Children in NSW

TASMANIA: The Child Friendly State, held the first Australian No Smacking Day on April 30, 2003.

Patmalar Ambikapathy the Children's Commissioner, HOBART Tasmania spoke to Gregory Kable a caseworker at Justice Action at the Controlling Crime Conference at Redfern in Sydney yesterday and we both realised how parallel our ideas about crime prevention were.

Justice Alistair Nicholson of the Family Court of Australia,

"Smacking a child ought to be seen as assault," he said.

So if it's a crime to punish children, or adults for that matter, then the punishment is the crime. Punishment, threats and smacking only get short-term results, if any result at all.

Long term results are gained by the following practice:

1) Inviting children or adults in the decision making process means you learn more about them.

2) Allowing children or adults to come up with an idea about how they can help you solve the problem they may be causing you or others.

a) will ensure they are not being judged by you or others
b) will ensure they are not wrongly blamed by you or others
c) If they think of a way they can help you they will also have an obligation to do what it was they suggested because it was their idea.

Simple as ABC!

Justice Action believes that we get more support preventing people going to jail than we do trying to get people out of jail. Prevention is better than cure.

You can help plant this seed so that 5 per cent of Australians don't go to jail and learn effective ways to solve a problem, they may be having with you or with other people.

Furthermore, we don't need jails, we need Universities. It's a child's right to be educated. The community will save lives and money by teaching people not to smack children or adult, in order to solve a problem, they may be having with children or adults.

The savings and benefits from this policy will provide free education, because we're not spending money on police (domestic violence) and prisons (violence). As well as keeping people out of hospitals. The potential results may be a long way off, but in the grand scheme of things, there will be a lot less violence in the community.

This day has been celebrated overseas and now it is New South Wales and it's the rest of Australia's turn to follow international best practice, and show our children and young people that we do value them.

We would like to invite all children, young people, families, members of the community and workers to celebrate this day Nationally, in whatever way they wish.

When launched, Justice Action will discuss "alternatives to physical punishment" and be available for interviews. For the first time NSW we will have a Statewide No Smacking Day on a date to be fixed? Working in cooperation with the NSW Childrens' Commissioner I hope?

Otherwise Justice Action will go it alone. After all life is community service!

Many parents worry about violence in our society. As parents, we may not realise that we are contributing to the problem of violence by our example of hitting children. Hitting children teaches them that violence wins! The more we hit children, the more likely they are to become bullies, to hit friends and family members, and to hit spouses and their children when they are adults.

This will be the first international No-Smacking Day in NSW. The observance seeks to bring a much-needed focus on ending corporal punishment of children and helping parents develop effective non-violent alternatives.

It's time for strongly promoting alternatives to physical punishment of children. On a date to be fixed Gregory Kable and Justice Action hopefully with the NSW Childrens Commissioner will call on all parents to consider breaking the habit of hitting children and seek out non-violent alternatives, through reading, talking with friends, children and partners, and participating in community parenting programs.

Hitting people is wrong, and children are people too. This is the day to begin to break the habit of hitting children.
