Blasts kill 83 in Egyptian resort

At least 83 people have been killed and 200 injured when car bombs ripped through markets and hotels in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the worst attack in Egypt since 1981.

Shaken European tourists spoke of mass panic and hysteria as people fled the carnage in the early hours, with bodies strewn across the roads, people screaming and sirens wailing.

The regional governor said two car bombs and possibly a suitcase bomb had rocked the resort, popular with divers and European holiday-makers, as well as diplomats who have convened summits of world leaders at Sharm el-Sheikh.

One blast tore the front off the Ghazala Gardens Hotel in Naama Bay, the site of most of the resort's luxury hotels. People were feared trapped in the rubble of the lobby. A car broke into the hotel compound and exploded in front of the building, South Sinai Governor Mustafa Afifi said.

A senior security source in Sharm el-Sheikh said 83 people were killed and 23 people were in critical condition, from among 35 casualties taken to Cairo for treatment. Most of the victims were Egyptians but the Tourism Ministry spokeswoman said seven non-Egyptians were dead, including a Czech and an Italian, and 20 were injured.

The injured foreigners were nine Italians, five Saudis, three Britons, a Russian, a Ukrainian and an Israeli Arab, spokesman Hala el-Khatib told reporters. But the British Foreign Office in London said that eight Britons were injured.

Egyptian Interior Minister Habib el-Adli said it was too early to say whether Al Qaeda or other Islamist groups had any connection with the bombings but there was probably a link with attacks further north last October.

In the October bombings, 34 people were killed, most of them at the Taba Hilton on the Israeli border.

Egyptian authorities blamed them on a Palestinian leading an unaffiliated group. Last month Israel stepped up warnings to its own citizens, saying the risk of another such attack had risen. Security sources said at least one car that blew up on Saturday had special plates indicating it had come over the Israeli border at Taba on the Sinai peninsula.

Fireball

The attacks on Saturday were the worst in Egypt at least since militant Islamists stormed a security headquarters in the southern city of Assiut in 1981, killing scores of people.

Ahmed Mustafa, a waiter at a coffee shop near the first of the explosions, said a massive fireball tore through the car park outside a shopping mall in Sharm el-Sheikh town. It was about 1:15am local time.

The explosion turned cars into skeletons of twisted metal, blew down masonry on nearby buildings and shattered windows for hundreds of metres (yards) around.

Officials said a car had exploded there but an eyewitness said a man had walked into a crowd with a large travel bag and announced in Egyptian Arabic: "I have a bomb."

Some people moved away but others thought he was joking, said the witness, who asked not to be named. Two minutes later an explosion took place where he had put the bag, she added.

"I saw a car flying up in the air, people running," restaurant owner Yehya Mohammed said by telephone.

"I do not think I will ever forget this in my life. This is a horrible setback for tourism here."

An emergency services official said many wounded were Egyptian workers gathered at a cafe in the old market. Seventeen of the dead were burnt beyond recognition.

Sharm residents said they heard two more explosions coming from Naama Bay in quick succession, blasts that could be felt 10 kilometres away. Witnesses said the first of these hit the hotel and the second a taxi rank. The blasts came at a time when many tourists were still out in bars and markets in the popular and hitherto safe resort.

Confusion

Tourist Fabio Basone said: "People were trying to run in any direction to get away but were not clear where to go."

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak cut short a holiday on the Mediterranean coast and flew to Sharm el-Sheikh, officials said.

Tourism Minister Ahmed el-Maghrabi said: "These incidents will have an effect in the short term (on tourism)."

Foreigners have been targeted in Egypt in earlier attacks.

Tourism is a major source of revenues and employment in Egypt, which needs to create about 650,000 jobs a year for its youthful population. Some analysts say Egypt attracted extra visitors this year after many avoided tsunami-hit Asia.

CIA defends terror suspect transfers?

Suspected terrorists [scapegoats for the Coalition of the Killings's resource wars in the Middle East] in US custody have been transferred to third countries for the past 20 years, CIA director Porter Goss told the US Senate armed services committee.

Mr Goss also defended his spy agency's current interrogation practices but could not say all methods used as recently as last December conformed to US law?

Former Australian Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib, who was arrested in Pakistan several weeks after September 11 attacks [US false flags] and was then transferred to Egypt and Guantanamo Bay, says he was tortured while in custody by US, Egyptian and Pakistani authorities.

Mr Goss' defence of the policy of renditioning follows criticisms the US has faced for allegedly "outsourcing" torture to nations with questionable human rights records.

But not in Australia?

"I believe that if you go back and you take a look about transfers - helping other countries deal with terrorists [scapegoats, propaganda, fear-mongering] - you will find this is a process that's been going on for more than 20 years," Mr Goss said.

Mr Goss said that "serious allegations" of suspects being tortured abroad that have "been brought to the attention of the proper authorities have been referred properly for investigation"?

"I know of no instances where the intelligence community is outside the law on this," he said?

"I know for a fact that torture is not productive. That's not professional interrogation. We don't do torture," he said?

He acknowledged some CIA operatives may have been uncertain about approved interrogation techniques in the past?

"Professional interrogation has become a very useful and necessary way to obtain information to save innocent lives, to disrupt terrorist schemes and to protect our combat forces," Mr Goss told the committee?

Mr Goss, who took over the Central Intelligence Agency last September, assured the committee the CIA complied fully with a broad definition of torture contained in a Justice Department memo issued on December 30, 2004?

"At this time, there are no techniques, if I could say, that are being employed that are in any way against the law or would be considered torture," he said?

He could not offer assurances about CIA practices earlier last year, when the Government followed a narrower interrogation policy that critics say led to torture?

"Are you able to tell us today that there were no techniques being used by the intelligence community that were against the law ... up to the end of 2004?" asked Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, the committee's ranking Democrat.

"I am not able to tell you that," said Mr Goss, who offered to discuss the issue further at a later closed-door session.

On Wednesday, President George Dubya Bushit said that he does not support torture, and noted that he received assurances from countries where US officials send prisoners that they will not be tortured?

"This country does not believe in torture. We do believe in protecting ourselves; we don't believe in torture," Mr Bush said during a press conference when asked about the policy of rendition?

"The United States must make sure we protect our people and our friends from attack. That was the charge we have been given. And one way to do so is to arrest people and send them back to their country of origin with the promise that they won't be tortured. That's the promise we receive," he said.

Bushit did not directly address whether Washington extracted that same promise when it does not repatriate a suspected terrorists but sends that person to a third country?

"We seek assurances that nobody will be tortured when we render a person back to their home country," said the president?

The former Guantanamo Bay detainee says that when he was interrogated in Egypt, he was questioned about names and phone numbers that could only have been obtained from a mobile phone simcard he left at his Sydney home.

His house was raided by ASIO in 2001.

The Greens have moved a motion in the Senate to investigate the claims.

The Opposition had signalled it would support the inquiry but after internal discussions, Labor says it does not think a Senate probe is an appropriate forum to investigate the allegations.

Habib's call renews welfare concerns

Waiting: Maha Habib has spoken to her husband for the first time in two-and-a-half years.

Australian Guantanamo Bay detainee, [prisoner], Mamdouh Habib's first phone call to his family in two-and-a-half years has renewed concerns for his welfare.

Mr Habib has been allowed a monitored conversation with his wife, Maha, and has also been able to speak to his son, Ahmed.

Ahmed says he just wanted to know that his father is alive, and is thinking about the family.

"Now I spoke to him, I just feel like saying this: I just think we should do something right away before it is too late," he said.

"Because he told me that he has given up and that's not my dad. He doesn't give up."

During the call, Mr Habib told his wife that he has been treated poorly by Australian diplomatic officials and not to rely on Government authorities for help.

"And he also mentioned, actually, about how the Australian consulars, they treated him so bad," Mrs Habib said.

"They have been bad with him, they have treated him very badly.

"He said that ASIO also, they have given him a hard time."

The phone call from Guantanamo Bay was monitored and briefly stopped when Mr Habib compared his living conditions to a film called Lock Up, staring Sylvester Stallone.

The film features scenes of psychological torture.

"The conversation cut out - was cut off - and the gentleman asked me can I please speak to the attendance officer," Mrs Habib said.

"She came in and she explained to me: Do not speak in Arabic and do not talk about the security issues."

Mr Habib also told his wife not to send photographs.

"When we went to London they told me that they were cutting off the head of the photo of the children and putting it on top of the animal body and use it in the interrogation room," Mrs Habib said.

Lawyer Stephen Hopper says the information gleaned from the phone call backs up earlier claims that his client has been treated badly.

"It certainly is not inconsistent and corroborates earlier statements by other released detainees, [prisoners], and other information we've gathered about Mamdouh's initial detention, his rendering to Egypt to be tortured, the Australian Government's complicity in crimes against humanity and the continued slipshod treatment by the Australian Government of an Australian citizen," he said.

Wary beginning

At the start of the call, it took some time to convince Mr Habib he was speaking to his family.

"He said, 'Are you still in Australia?'" Mrs Habib said.

"And I said, 'Yes, we are still in Australia.'

"He said, 'Are you sure?'

"I said, 'Yes we are, we are still in the same house you left us in and I am not going to move until you come back and we will move together.'"
