FTA - Free Raid Agreement a millstone not a milestone: Community

Now a man can move much faster, without a millstone around his neck. So if you get the chance to lose it, you've gotta drop it and run like heck, hey...

The United States, [War criminal], President George W Bush has signed the free trade, [raid], agreement (FTA) between Australia and America, describing it as a milestone in the two countries' alliance. But most working class Australians see the same proposal as a millstone hanging around their necks! You don't believe George Dubya Bush do you? And that's just a coincidence isn't it? That Dubya signed the deal now!

While Bush hailed the agreement, it is, [allegedly], facing a deadlock in the Australian Senate, with Labor, [allegedly], seeking two key amendments. [?] It is not clear what effect the move will have on the Australian Government's ability to incorporate Labor's amendments into the agreement. [?] Are you sure? It wouldn't be US propaganda now would it?

War criminal Bush signed the agreement during a ceremony at the White House attended by Australian and US officials. He heaped praise on, [war criminal], Prime Minister John Howard, saying: "Prime Minister Howard's superb leadership has ensured the ties between the two countries remains strong". And we can smell it!

So if you do what Bush says and what Bush wants then you are a superb subordinate of the 51st state of the US and 'you stink'. Shame about the Australian working class interests.

He says Australia and America have never been closer and the FTA will benefit both countries. "It serves the interests of citizens with ambition and initiative," he said.

[Yeah but you can bet the FTA won't serve the 600,000 dead people in the pre-emptive strikes, occupation and genocide of Iraq. Nor the dead people killed in Afghanistan by the Coalition of the Killing.]

It will benefit both countries 'corporate interests' for what?

This means loss of jobs and financial difficulties for the consumers that include the working class, sick, frail, elderly and peasants here in Australia. People who can ill afford to lose their jobs or pay more money for goods.

Meanwhile, the Federal Opposition wants local content rules for television and radio enshrined in legislation. Not a bad idea unless you want to watch American sitcoms on Australian television all the time. It also wants protection for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in the form of laws to stop major drug companies delaying the introduction of cheaper generic medicines.

Opposition Leader Mark Latham says he will not be giving an inch and he is prepared to fight it until election day. [?] "The way in which Mr Howard can resolve that dispute is to adopt our amendments and if he can, have his FTA by the end of the week," he said.

So if Howard adopts the amendments does that save the jobs? Does that change the fact that the FTA encourages new drugs on our market that are the 'same' as what we already have but with a 'different names' time and time again? Not just that but the FTA prevents the information about the drugs being disseminated so people are able to tell if these new drugs are the same as what we have already.

That means they can flog a new drug every week even though it's not much different or better than what is on the market. You can bet you'll be paying more each time and the yuppies will buy the new products to be on top of what they think their health needs are because medical adds will be posted on the television to support the sale of these drugs.

The ABC's Four Corners [Walls] had the dossier for their story "A Bitter Pill" prior the Senate Committee and they could work out the pitfalls prior the Senate so how come the Senate decides that there needs to be amendments when they already must have had the same information as Four Corners [Walls] did perhaps even months ago?

Why did Latham wait to ask for changes when he must have already known what needed to be changed? It sounds like that this is a claytons inquiry about what was going to be stated as amendments and the Howard Government new about it and so did Latham.

So it should have come as no surprise to the government who have no doubt worked it out with LABOR so that LIB/LAB look like they oppose each other when they clearly don't. Why? Because it is in Australia's Corporate Interests......

Four Corners [Walls] is government propaganda and if they are the detectives here then all the fuss had already been decided so the question has to be asked doesn't it? Are the alleged amendments going to make the Free Raid Agreement any better than what it already is? And the answer to that question is? How come Four Corners, [Walls], started the debate and not the Senate Committee looking into the details of the FTA? Just stinks doesn't it?

Howard says the cost of prescription medicines will not increase because of the deal and the Government will only agree to the local content changes. "The other proposal is not one that we will support and that's our position and we can't support it," Howard said.

Labor's health spokeswoman Julia Gillard is, [allegedly], standing firm. [?]

"Why can't the Government do the simple thing and agree with Labor's amendment and bed in a protection for our PBS, which is very important to all Australians over the longer term," she said.

If the Government agrees does that fix the problem with the FTA and it's concession to corporations at the expense of all the working class Australians?

A Senate committee has, [allegedly], spent the past five months investigating the deal that was agreed upon by the US and Australian governments in February. The Labor senators said the agreement duded sugar farmers and had not delivered on the mutual recognition of academic qualifications.

They accused the Government of trying to rush the agreement through without proper scrutiny of the detail. "The Government has attempted to harass the Parliament and the Australian people into accepting an agreement that has enormous implications for our national interest. It seems there will be an overall economic benefit, [? to who?] but Australia's national interest must always be considered in more than just economic terms," they said.

The Labor senators recommended that before any more free trade agreements were entered into, the Government should table a document setting out its priorities and comprehensive information about the expected impact. The statement would then be referred to a parliamentary committee to report within 90 days and negotiations would not begin until Parliament had endorsed the committee's recommendations and agreed to go ahead within the deal.

Labor senators recommended the proposed review of listing drugs on the pharmaceutical benefits scheme (PBS) be subject to an inquiry after the first 12 months of operation and annually afterwards. There had been concern the FTA would push up the price of prescription drugs in Australia.

They said the Government should independently monitor the impact of the FTA on the entry of generic drugs on to the market and make it an offence to lodge a false patent claim to delay the sale of generic drugs. Labor senators said they accepted the FTA meant local content rules for television could not be increased and said they should be enshrined in law.

John Howard wants Latham to do what is right for US and Australian corporations not what is right for the working class and if you call that Australian you will be voting for Howard. But we tell you... there is No Hope With Howard for the working class people of this country. Debate on the FTA will resume in the Senate today.

PUT YOUR LEFT FOOT FORWARD THIS FEDERAL ELECTION "WITHOUT FEAR" AND VOTE 1 THE GREENS.
