US militants have launched a full-scale attack to occupy the Iraqi city of Fallujah.
Correspondents say radio traffic heard at a US militant's staging post just outside Fallujah indicates US/Iraqi militia have moved at least four blocks into Fallujah, and are still advancing.
A little earlier, the marines unleashed a barrage of tank and machine-gun fire on a nearby railway station, clearing the way for the ground assault.
An unknown number of Fallujah's 300,000 residents have fled the city.
The ground attack is expected to involve street fighting, which would extract heavy casualties from both civilians and resistance fighters.
A US militant unit seized the railway station and a separate unit is reported to have entered the Jolan district in the north-west of Fallujah.
Correspondents with the US militants reported planes dropping 2000-pound (907-kilogram) bombs on the city, and heavy engagement on the outskirts as the terrorists prepared to fight their way in through several main roads.

Some of the freedom fighters and residents who had been in the city had departed before the assault began.
