Sydney Social Forum Oct 24-26

The Sydney Social Forum is to take place om October 24-26. Some of you may see this an opportunity to hold a workshop on your area of concern. I encourage everyone to participate. This is a great opportunity to learn about, share, and discuss a broad spectrum of issues that directly or indirectly affect us.

As a contact for your local Peace Group, we hope that you are in a position to help publicise and contribute to the second Sydney Social Forum (SSF), which is being held on October 24-26 at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Taking its inspiration from the World Social Forum which took place this year in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the Sydney Social Forum is an open series of meetings, workshops and discussions promoting peace, social justice and environmental sustainability.

In September 2002 the first Sydney Social Forum (SSF) was held, attracting over 400 people, the support of 35 organisations and over 70 workshops covering a broad range of topics and issues. Since that time, a number of events have made the need for collaboration and discussion even more urgent.

The war on Iraq has signalled an intensifying permanent war on the world's poor, adding more open unilateral military aggression to existing neo-liberal offensives conducted through organisations like the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and World Trade Organisation.

In Australia, the Howard government's enthusiastic support for US foreign policy has been accompanied by increasing attacks on public health care and higher education, the continuation of a deplorable refugee policy, and a push for wider deregulation and privatisation as part of a Free Trade Agreement with the US.

On the other side, the worldwide movement against the war in Iraq and Sydney's largest ever political demonstration in February was also a spectacular expression of opposition to corporate greed and lack of democracy.

Within this context, the SSF aims generally to promote discussion of analyses of the state of the world, visions of an alternative world and strategies to get from one to the other.

We are hoping that you can publicise the forum through your networks and, even better, that you may decide to participate in discussion and perhaps even hold a workshop at the SSF it is an open forum accessible to all who wish to contribute.

LATE last year the NSW Force set up protesters by placing an ad on the mainstream media news network professing that there was going to be violence at the peaceful demonstrations against WTO and now the war on Iraq. See link below: NSW Police incite violent protests at WTO meeting.

The violent spectacle began at Town Hall and resulted in two police officers and a number of protesters being injured. At least 45 mostly teenage participants were arrested including a boy aged 10 after the rally erupted into violence about 12.30pm.

Assistant Police Commissioner Dick Adams said it was clear a large proportion of protesters had come to the rally "for the express purpose of fighting police."

"We had a group of people who went to Town Hall [for] nothing other than to incite trouble," he said.

But that is what Adams said the night before and now guess what his prediction come true but was it a prediction?

Not just that they should get a pat on the back and be proud of themselves for demonstrating for peace. Clutching placards condemning Prime Minister John Howard and US President George W. Bush, a 2000-strong group of students many wearing their school uniforms gathered for the protest at midday."No war, no war, no war, no war, no war, no war, no war no could be heard as it echoed along the street" said, GKCNN undercover reporter Don't Setmeup.

Setmeup said, "Students burnt an American flag before moving on to Hyde Park, where scores of protesters cavorted in the Archibald Fountain. Hundreds of police officers surrounded the exits to the park, ensuring the crowd was contained within its boundaries." After leaving the park, the marchers moved through the Pitt St Mall and Castlereagh St, before congregating outside Mr Howard's Phillip St offices where they were divided and locked into a space. Told not to move and jailed into position. There, the protesters hurled further insults while as least 50 police, including mounted officers, tried to contain them.

Australian Arabic community leaders condemned the violent clashes but rejected police claims the perpetrators were Middle Eastern men.

NSW Govt defends action over WTO protests?

New South Wales Police Minister Michael Costa and Greens MP Ian Cohen have clashed in the state's Parliament over the use of police horses in World Trade Organisation (WTO) protests in central Sydney.

Fifteen people were arrested as the demonstration brought the city to a standstill. Police estimate as many as 1,000 people set off from Martin Place this morning. The anti-globalisation protest began peacefully, but 45 minutes in it turned ugly.

Mr Cohen, who attended the protest march, has claimed in Parliament that police were using horses to clear a path in the crowd, when a reporter from The Un-Australian Newspaper was trampled by one of them. "Will the Minister give a directive to stop using police horses as weapons in peace protests?" he said.

The protesters have since rallied outside a number of major corporations, including McDonalds and City Bank.They have also set alight two American flags, vowing to cause as much disruption as possible.

The invitation has come from Australia's Trade Minister Mark Vaile and the groups to be represented include the Australian Council for Overseas Aid, World Vision and the ACTU.

World Vision's trade issues spokeswoman Kirsty Nowlan says the groups are seeking action from the WTO on access by poorer countries to life-saving drugs, market access, technical support and food security.

"But because we have such a limited time for negotiations, we are going to focus our attention on the Tripps agreement and access to affordable medicines for the world's poor, we are also going to be raising a couple of extra issues including agriculture, and the so-called Singapore issues, what we are asking the ministers to do is not extend negotiations in the WTO any further," she said. Operation commander Inspector Glen Harrison says while the majority of protesters were well behaved, police had to deal with a handful intent on violence and disruption.

A Spokesperson for Justice Action Gregory Kable said "This is one of the strategies used by police to counter what they consider are the ringleaders. The people arrested would have been profiled and previously chosen to be regarded as trouble makers. The police intend to make their life hell for a while by drip feeding them through the court system, by strip searching them and degrading them in police cells loaded with cold steel and concrete."

Around a dozen protesters were arrested and charged with a variety of offences including obstruction and assault and an offensive behaviour charge over the burning of an American flag.What? Offences? What? Offences? What???

Inspector Harrison says it is yet to be determined whether mounted police were involved in the injury of a newspaper journalist, who is now being treated in hospital.( Skoff) "[Police] were on Standby at that particular stage, just the same as all the other police there, they were there in case there was a violent protest," he said. "Now, unfortunately one of your journalists has been injured by something at that stage, we're still investigating that at the present moment." One of the protesters at today's rally says the action was a success but he has criticised police for heavy-handed tactics.

Damien Lawson from the refugee group "No one is Illegal" says officers used excessive force. "The police have a right to arrest people ... who are doing the wrong thing, they don't have a right to use excessive and unlawful force, such as police horses, to wade through a crowd of people to get to one individual," he said.

A spokesperson for Justice Action, Dalai Lama said, "Sack the Minister who spent the money to terrorise the community by employing terrorists to undermine civil and democratic rights. Or spend the money on a Bill of Rights so the Community are not legislated out of their rights to demonstrate their worth".

Traffic along George St in the city's central business district was brought to a standstill while the demonstrators marched from the town hall to the offices of the Immigration department.

They carried placards and banners reading "Welcome refugees, kick out the WTO". It is the first of many protests to be held in Sydney during an informal meeting of the World Trade Organisation later this week. Protest organisers say there is widespread opposition to globalisation.

Police have begun making a number of arrests as protests continue in Sydney's central business district against the World Trade Organisation (WTO) meeting. Among those arrested was a protester who jumped onto the roof of a Government bus. Earlier, demonstrators burnt an American flag outside the US consulate. Twenty-six-year-old Natasha Verco is one of the protesters taken into custody.

She spoke to the ABC from the back of a paddy wagon.

"I was standing behind the police lines, I was actually behind the horses," she said

"They were pushing somebody's head into the ground and there was about eight police on one male and I was saying there is no need to hurt anybody, there is no need to be violent and they said 'get her' and they just picked me up and bent my wrist back and threw me in the back of the van."

New South Wales Police and the police association are preparing for violent protests outside the World Trade Organisation meeting in Sydney later this week. A police spokesman says officers will not tolerate any unruly behaviour during the meeting of world leaders at the Homebush Olympic site.

The commander of the security operation, Dick Adams, is expected to discuss some of the details of the large police operation later today, including plans to set aside special areas for protesters outside the venue. Meanwhile, Sydney high school students are vowing to walk out of classes on Friday to protest against war and globalisation.
