Bali bomber? Azahari dead?

Allegedly the government responsible and or complicit in the Bali bombings and an attack on the Australian embassy in Jakarta cannot now be blamed because the Indonesian authorities claim to have blown up a man they blamed it on.

Azahari bin Husin, the man they claim was responsible but now cannot give any evidence contrary to what has been claimed by the authorities because they alleged to have witnessed that he was blown up.

Quite strange was the fact that the Un-Australian headlined it this morning before any alleged DNA result confirmed the death of the alleged person Azahari bin Husin. Did he even exist? Will you be satisfied with the alleged DNA testing by the Indonesian authorities? Was he the Bali bomber? Did he execute both explosions in the first Bali bombing?

Has he been dead for some time and his DNA stored?

Sorry to tell everyone out there in TV land but there is more to this than meets the air waves and because it is claimed Husin was cornered by police in East Java means you have to trust the Indonesian police?

Police said it 'appeared' Azahari, Indonesia's most wanted man, had died during a police raid in the city of Malang yesterday afternoon.

However, the officer said it would be some time before his death was confirmed because his body 'could have been blown to pieces'.

Allegedly two of his companions also appeared to have blown themselves up, possibly using backpack bombs similar to those used last month in the latest Bali attacks, which killed 23 people, including the three suicide bombers?

A journalist at the site told Indonesian television that he had seen the dismembered body of Azahari? Did he take a photo? "The body was in pieces but his face could still be recognised by two members of the anti-terrorist unit from Jakarta," he said. "He blew himself up together with the house."

Then we should be able to see it right? If he seen it then why don't the public see it. Will there be independent testing? And how are they going to prove whether he was the Bali mastermind?

Several other people were reportedly arrested so they know he was there? Are they going to be tortured into submission? Why didn't they confirm it was Azahari straight up?

Before any DNA testing and before identification by any independent body accept for the corrupt Indonesian police.

Azahari, who allegedly went to school and university in Adelaide, was wanted as an alleged suspect of a string of attacks on Western targets that killed hundreds of people [just another patsy for the Coalition of the Killing's resource wars in the Middle East.] These included the two Bali attacks, the bombing of the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003 and the bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta last year. Last night, local press reported that Indonesia's national police chief, General Sutanto, was on his way to Malang, along with the East Java military commander, Major-General Samsul Mappareppa?

Hundreds attempt self-harm in detention

More than half of the 900 self-harm incidents over three years occurred in the Baxter detention centre.

Nearly 900 immigration detainees have tried to harm themselves in the past three years, Immigration Department figures reveal.

The figures show there have been 878 attempts at self-harm and half of those attempts occurred at the Baxter detention centre in South Australia.

The details have been provided in response to a freedom of information request made by Sydney academic and author Denise Leith.

Dr Leith says the figures are appalling.

"These are people who have sought from us asylum," she said.

"These are people who probably are in pain or have been traumatized."

The head of Psychological Medicine at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital, Jon Jureidini, has assessed detainees at Baxter.

"After people have been in detention for extended periods of time, almost all people that I've come across have harmed themselves in some way."

Australian man denies owning drug stash

AN Adelaide man facing up to 10 years in a Bali prison for drug possession has denied owning a stash of hashish allegedly found at his rented bungalow.

John Julian Pyle, 42, is an internet businessman and frequent Bali visitor who is on the anti-drugs education committee of the Ubud Rotary Club.

He faces a maximum of 10 years' jail if found guilty of possessing a 1.8 grams of hashish.

Pyle, whose trial began today, has admitted owning 0.8 grams of the drug found at his bungalow in Gianyar, just outside the mountain tourist village of Ubud in early May, his lawyer Rifan Mohammad said.

But he denied owning the other 1.0 gram, saying it had belonged to an Indonesian woman he met at a bar in Ubud and took back to his bungalow, Mohammad said.

"He had some girl come to his house, and that girl brought that 1.0 gram of hash," Mohammad said after the charges against Pyle were read out in Gianyar District Court.

The woman's full identity and whereabouts are unknown.

Pyle claims he is not a resident of Bali but spends many months of each year on the island.

He appeared relaxed as prosecutor Dayu Surasmi told the court that police searched his bungalow on May 8 and found 1.8 grams of hashish allegedly bought in Kuta for 200,000 rupiah ($A27) per gram.

Pyle denied owning 1.0 gram found wrapped in plastic under a table cloth on a desk.

But he admitted owning 0.1 gram found inside a condom box and another 0.7 gram found inside bottles in a kitchen cupboard, Surasmi said.

His urine also tested positive for hash use, she added.

Surasmi said Pyle had admitted being addicted to the drug.

"He has been using this hashish for 25 years," she told the three judges.

"He uses it everyday."

Pyle faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison if found guilty of the primary charge of possessing a category-1 narcotic under article 78 of Indonesia's tough anti-drugs law.

He also faces up to four years' jail if found guilty of a secondary charge relating to illegal drug use.

Dressed in a green and gold shirt and black slacks, Pyle had earlier arrived at the court un-handcuffed and was seen talking and joking in Indonesian with his police guard in a small holding room.

He would not speak to journalists except to say he was being treated well at Gianyar police station, where he has been held since his arrest.

The trial was adjourned until July 12.

Psychiatrists treating mentally-ill Baxter detainees have rejected the Immigration Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone's call for them to restrict their role to the immediate care of patients.

Adelaide's Glenside Psychiatric Hospital is treating nine patients from the Baxter immigration detention centre, including Australia's longest serving detainee, Peter Qasim.

Some psychiatrists are worried the men may be sent back to the detention centre, but Senator Vanstone says that is not their concern.

"I would personally have some concern if I thought psychiatrists were doing anything other than treating their patients for the mental health condition they have," she said.

"Of course you'd take into account the advice of a psychiatrists in relation to someone's mental health.

"But once they're well, then the psychiatrist's role finishes."Jon Jureidini, the psychiatrist who admitted Peter Qasim to Glenside Hospital a week ago, rejects Senator Vanstone's comments.

"I think it's very much in a psychiatrist's role to express concerns about things that they think are damaging to their patient's health," he said. "It would be negligent of a psychiatrist not to speak out against things that drive people crazy. "I know that the patients I've seen were driven crazy by being in Baxter. "To send them back there, once they'd recovered, would be to expose them to the same kinds of risks that caused the problem in the first place."

CORNELIA Rau returned to psychiatric care in Adelaide, just days after being released into the community, appears to be very suspicious indeed!

After being wrongfully locked up in immigration detention last year, Ms Rau was released from the psychiatric ward at the Royal Adelaide Hospital - on strict conditions that included taking medication daily.

However, her guardian - The Office of the Public Advocate - Another arm of Government - The same government that illegally locked her up in detention said she had been returned to the Glenside Psychiatric Hospital.

But some, would say she was returned because she let the cat out of the bag and exposed the government lie that, perhaps 'she never had a mental illness' but instead was caused mental anguish by her treatment in custody.

Spokeswoman Margaret Farr said the public advocate believed things had got "out of hand" in terms of what information had been reported in the press.

"We would ask if the media could respect her privacy," Ms Farr said?

"So what we are saying is just that she has been returned to hospital for further assessment."

But it wasn't to shut her up?

Following her release, allegedly Ms Rau caused her carers some worry when she left her accommodation in the morning and did not return until late that night.

While she was essentially free to come and go as she pleased, her long absence raised concerns for her abductor's DIMIA, no doubt

Ms Rau, whose wrongful immigration detention is now the subject of an official inquiry, said she would pursue financial compensation in the courts.

Ms Rau was wrongly identified as an illegal immigrant last year and held in a Queensland prison and then in the Baxter Immigration Detention Centre in South Australia for a total of 10 months.

Ms Rau said she had been "locked up in a cage like a caged animal".

She also said that she didn't suffer from a mental illness, the reason given by the authorities to lock her up.

Her lawyer, Claire O'Connor, said Ms Rau was upset at being returned to Glenside and it was hoped another trial release could be arranged soon.

Preventing Prisoner Rape

Here in Adelaide we have recently formed an organisation called Preventing Prisoner Rape which is aiming to raise awareness about the issue of rape in prisons, to try to bring in appropriate law reform and changes to prison administration, and also to reach out and support prison rape survivors.

I'll just fill you in on a little of the history.

In the early 1990s I worked within welfare and education at Long Bay Prison and was horrified by some of the stories I heard from young guys there who had been subjected to assault.

The stories I heard facilitating groups with transgender inmates were also horrible. At the same time I was asked by Dulwich Centre, an independent counselling, community work and publishing house here in Adelaide (which had been involved in responding to the Deaths in Custody Royal Commission in partnership with Aboriginal Health) to put together a book about prisons - or more accurately alternatives to prisons.

This became the book 'Beyond the prison: Gathering dreams of freedom'. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I undertook research for this book and this took me to various places including New York City where I met Stephen Donaldson, one of the key early members of Stop Prisoner Rape in the US.

I have stayed in touch with the work of this grass roots organisation ever since and recently visited their headquarters in LA. Stop Prisoner Rape in the US has had amazing success in the last few years in making the issue of prison rape a national issue. So much so that a federal law has now been passed and every state government is required to take a 'zero tolerance policy' to rape in prison.

Stephen Donaldson (who has since died of AIDS -he acquired HIV through rape in prison) would be amazed at what has been achieved. There is now money and research and more importantly significant action being taken to address the issue of prisoner rape in the US.

I actually find it very inspiring what they have achieved. When I met Stephen the organisation was just operating from his apartment.

Anyway, there is a group of us here in Adelaide who are now determined to try to do something similar here in Australia. I want to let you know about what we are doing at present:

* We have developed a draft prisoner rape support package that we wish to make available to current prisoners or ex-prisoners who have experienced sexual violence in detention.

* We are seeking stories, documents, records, reports of prison rape from across Australia so that we can start to build a case that this is an issue that needs to be taken seriously and addressed in this country.

* We have approached a number of lawyers to see if they would be interested in investigating the possibility of introducing legislation inspired by that which has been and is being developed in the US.

* We are just beginning to make links with other groups committed to prison reform, prison action, prison abolition, prisoner support and so on.

* We have good links with the Stop Prisoner Rape people in the US who wish to support us in anyway that they can and we may arrange for one of their workers to visit and give a speaking tour in the future.

We would really value hearing from any of you about ideas, suggestions, stories, connections about this issue.

It was only yesterday that I heard of the work of Vickie Douglas from the Prison Reform Group in Tasmania and I had contact with Vickie I also hope to meet up with more of you in the future in person, or on the phone, or via email.

I know very little about the situation in Tasmania but look forward to learning more. I have considerable respect for all the work that you are involved in.

The Police attended and were to meet me 2 days after to take my statement. This second meeting never happened. The Optional Protocol requires 20 ratifications to enter into force. All States Parties to the UN Convention against Torture should seriously consider ratifying the OPCAT as soon as possible.
