Refugee advocacy group Rural Australians for Refugees will deliver gifts to every detainee at South Australia's Baxter detention centre this Christmas.

Sister Claudette Cusack from the Port Augusta group says members from across Australia have prepared about 230 gifts for the detainees, regardless of their faith or age.

She says the gifts are mainly practical items like stationery, towels and art and craft materials.

Sister Claudette says careful consideration has also been given to ensure the gifts will be allowed into the detention centre.

"We're going to wrap them in clear cellophane so that the ACM [Australasian Correctional Management] people can see exactly what's in them so that they don't need to be opened hopefully, so that they can come as gifts," she said.

The senate's ability to act as an important check on government is under threat.

[War criminal], Prime Minister and dictator John Howard wants to now stop the Senate from doing its job of holding the government to account and scrutinising its legislation.

He wants to change the Australian Constitution to effectively strip the Senate of its power to improve bills or oppose them?

The changes would turn the Senate into a replica of the House of Representatives a chamber that rubber stamps the Federal Governments legislation no matter how objectionable it is?

The Un-Austalian newspaper : "Mr Latham's personal support has grown rapidly since his election and he is now virtually equal to the best personal ratings Mr Crean had in two years."

"As well, Labor's primary vote, up six points to 41 per cent since the end of November, has jumped in Mr Crean's absence and the ALP is now back to the levels of support it had before the Tampa asylum-seeker controversy and September 11. Bad luck, NSW is in want of more need, otherwise there would be a real challenge for Howard the Dictator V's Carr the Dictator, just comes down to the best Dictator then, and that makes it simple.

The Un-Ausrtalian: "The real encouragement for Labor's new generation of leadership is Mr Latham's rapidly rising performance against John Howard as preferred prime minister. "
