The US should state its reasons?

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer is refusing to comment on whether he has been approached to replace Mohamed El Baradei as the head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog.

The Washington Post says the Bush administration wants the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed El Baradei, to step down.

They want to replace him with a US lapdog? Someone who would open the gate to pre-emptively attacking Iran or the "Axis of Evil" countries nominated by the Bush administration.

The article says Mr Downer is the top choice to take over the position but that the Foreign Minister has been unwilling to mount a challenge.

The US should state its reasons?

Defence Minister Robert Hill thinks that is the right decision?

"He's doing an excellent job as Foreign Minister so I'd like him to stay as Foreign Minister," Senator Hill said.

But he's also done an excellent job for the Bush administration in the illegal and degrading war on Iraq, something that the US relied on. No wonder they would like to extend the offer to Downer at the IAEA?

The recent US led attack on Koffi Annan leaves food for thought? That ought to be enough for people to see through this jobs "for the willing" type of nomination by the US.

The UN was convinced that Mr Annan was the most suitable person for the job and now just days later the US reaches out for Downer to take up leadership at the IAEA?

Labor's Kevin Rudd says he wants to know whether the Howard Government supports Dr El Baradei's leadership.

"I haven't heard anyone so far say that Mohamed El Baradei performed badly," Mr Rudd said.

"If the Howard Government has a view that the current head of the IAEA is not up to the job, then they have a responsibility to tell the Australian people why that is the case."

A spokesman for Mr Downer says the Minister will not comment on the report.

Is this an attack on world organizations by the US looking for more willing partners? Are they seeking to undermine organizations that would or could prevent war?

Not that the UN ever prevented an illegal and degrading war on Iraq but at least it was noted. Certain countries had exploited the majority and spat into the face of the world. A matter I'm sure will not be forgotten.

Perhaps another illegal and degrading war would be too embarrassing for the US?

Weapons inspectors missed WMD in Iraq

An Iraqi minister has said United Nations nuclear inspectors are welcome to return in response to concerns of an "apparent systematic dismantlement" of Saddam Hussein's once-vigorous nuclear program.

Missing missile

A missile apparently only 120cm long, has remained undiscovered by UN weapons inspectors because Saddam Hussein kept it in his own house.

The information comes from an unlikely source, however - five-year-old Daniel Crawford of Basildon, Essex said, " He had it in the cupboard under the stairs, where they never looked" Daniel explained, "and they wouldn't have seen it anyway, because it's behind the hoover".

Science and Technology Minister Rashad Omar was responding to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report that neither Baghdad nor Washington appeared to have noticed the disappearance of nuclear equipment and materials once closely monitored by the agency.

"The locations that belong to the Science and Technology ministry are secure and under our control," Mr Omar told Rooters.

He said nothing had gone missing since a looting spree after last year's US-led invasion, which the United States and Britain said was to rid Iraq of weapons of mass destruction?

Both countries now admit Saddam had no banned weapons.

But Master Crawford told reporters, "It is the most powerfullest nuclear bomb in the whole wide world," he said.

"And it can go for a million miles, so you could blow up the moon."

That's why we need weapons inspectors back in Iraq to have a look in the cupboard under the stairs, behind Saddam's Hoover.

But Mr Omar said Tuwaitha, a vast compound south of Baghdad that included Iraq's main nuclear facility, was being turned into a science park.

"The IAEA came back one month ago, they inspected the plant and others and didn't say anything.

"We are transparent. We are happy for the IAEA or any other organisation to come and inspect," he said, adding he had not seen the agency's report to the Security Council.

Daniel reportedly had good contact with Saddam Hussein, by means of a special crow that landed on the shed in the back garden.
