Giant steps are what you take! Walking with Kylie'Moon'

600 of Australia's bravest demonstrators led by Kylie Moon stood staunch against the rebel NSW police Force demanding their civil and democratic rights to protest about the innocent killing of Iraqi citizens.

The NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, Dick Adams, woke up to himself and praised protesters for being "well behaved" during a largely peaceful rally at Town Hall Square.

Police made 10 arrests by late afternoon, although none related to crowd behaviour at the gathering. One naked woman who was not a protester was charged with obscene exposure, and a 15-year-old youth who was identified from police video footage faces charges related to burning papers at last week's march.

Organisers of yesterday's protest against war in Iraq - an umbrella of left-wing groups calling themselves "Books Not Bombs" - began the day insisting that a march would proceed despite warnings that police would make mass arrests if it proceeded because no permit had been granted.

A chief organiser, Kylie Moon, said: "We've had lots of meeting about this and we're determined to go ahead with the march." But soon after midday when most protesters had assembled it became clear that the police presence was so strong - possibly outnumbering protesters - that an attempt to march would be futile and merely lead to violence. By 1.45pm organiser Simon Butler began asking the crowd to disperse and return for an approved march on Palm Sunday.

Adams yesterday confirmed that an undercover police officer who mingled in the crowd used capsicum spray against some protesters after he was pinned against a wall by a group of demonstrators. Claims by some protesters that he acted without provocation would be investigated.

The president of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties, Terry O'Gorman, said comments by the Premier, Bob Carr, discouraging schoolchildren from participating were "patronising" and anti-democratic.

The director of the Human Rights Council, Patrick Earle, said that authorities had been "very quick to ban a protest rather than seeing banning as a last resort".

I'm wishing my days away, no way.
And if it's the price I pay, some say,
Tomorrow's another day, you'll stay,
I may as well play...
