New South Wales Opposition leader John Brogden says he is disappointed a leading Muslim cleric has described the police action involving him yesterday as "un-Australian".
Sheik Taj el-din-Hillaly was pulled over by the highway patrol in Sydney's south-west because of a piece of metal protruding from his car. Sheik Hillaly says he was handled badly by police, who allegedly wanted to search his car and person.
Scapegoat for the Coalition of the Killing
A spokesman for Sydney's Muslim spiritual leader Sheik Taj el-Din Hilaly has rejected claims he carries a weapon after news reports police had information he may be armed.
Police stopped the mufti's car for a traffic offence on the 6 January in Sydney's south-west. As officers searched him there was a scuffle and Hilaly was summonsed to appear before court on charges of assaulting and resisting police.
Fear mongering propaganda
It has been reported the police had intelligence reports dating back to 1999 that allege Sheik Hilaly carried a gun, claims which the Lebanese Muslim Association's Kaysar Trad says are untrue.
"He does not carry a gun and to my knowledge he has never carried a gun, and from what I know of him he is a man of peace and he calls for peace."It would have been clearly visible from the outside if he was carrying any weapon - I mean, it would have made a bulge in the wrong place," he said.
Mr John Green a spokesperson from Justice Action said, "The police were overdoing their job and community leaders need to assert their personal views to the wider Australian community, by reporting such abuse as Sheik Hillarly has done.

Muslim leader considers action over the arrest. The lawyer representing the Sydney-based muslim spirtual leader Sheik Taj el-Din Hilaly says his client is considering taking legal action against the police.
Sheik Tajuddin el Hilaly's lawyer Stephen Hopper says the cleric is yet to receive a summons for allegedly assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and traffic offences including driving an unregistered, uninsured car.
Mr Hopper says his client maintains his innocence and has raised concerns about the way police handled the arrest. "We're looking at all avenues including a summons against the police for unlawful detention, but we haven't made any firm decision in that area yet," he said. Mr Hopper has conceded the sheik's car was not registered at the time of the arrest, but says that matter has now been rectified.

THE CHICKEN: Why should we respect police if they're going to just deliver NOBLE CAUSE CORRUPTION? They have to earn RESPECT and sadly in 2002 they have not!!!
