When the WorkChoices legislation was before Parliament, GetUp members sent emails to Senators Barnaby Joyce and Steven Fielding asking them to stay strong and independent. This was followed up with a national telephone campaign.
The Coalition Government wanted to create a harsh, winner-takes-all industrial relations system in Australia, with dramatic effects on our wages, working conditions and holidays.
Two Senators held the key to this legislation passing. John Howard needed the vote of either National Party Senator Barnaby Joyce or Family First Senator Steven Fielding to pass these laws. Both men had serious concerns about the government's legislation, but came under heavy pressure to support the laws.
At that critical moment GetUp members sent them a message, explaining their concerns about the Government's industrial relations agenda and encouraging them to stand up for all those Australians who felt the same way.
