JOHN HOWARD SUPPORTS CALL FOR CLEMENCY - BUT ALSO "RESPECTS" DEATH PENALTY:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard, said on Melbourne Radio 3AW, that he supports Australia's appeal to Singapore President for clemency in the case of Nguyen Tuong Van, 23, facing execution by hanging in Singapore for drug-trafficking.
"I will certainly support approaches to the Singaporean President for clemency and that process is already, I understand, underway," said Mr Howard.
Mr Howard said that although he does not support the re-introduction of capital punishment in Australia, other countries had the right to impose their own laws on punishment. Mr Howard (again) re-confirmed his support for the death penalty for the Bali bombers.
"Every country has the right to impose their own laws. I "respect" their right," said Mr Howard.

The John Howard Society of Ontario has long been an opponent of the death penalty. Over the years, both as an individual organization and as a member of a coalition, the Society has been heavily involved in activities geared to, first, abolishing the death penalty in Canada and, then, preventing its reinstatement. Canada did abolish the death penalty for offences under the Criminal Code in 1976.
Further, a government motion in 1987 to support the reinstatement of the death penalty in principle was defeated. And finally, the death penalty for military service offences under the National Defence Act was abolished in 1999. Proudly, Canada now joins the growing number of nations that have abolished the death penalty for any offence and, by doing so, has met important human rights standards established by the United Nations.

We must recognise that not only judges but the whole legal system will struggle more and more. In the end the whole system will become a farce. This is the way empires end.
