Detention centre maggots

COME FLY WITH ME?

A Greens' MP has slammed claims that South Australia's Baxter Detention Centre detainees are putting maggots into their own food.

Detainees say maggots have been found in at least two meals in the past month.

Actually I'd add maggots to my food for flavour wouldn't you?

Greens' MP Kris Hanna has taken a sample of one of the meals in question to the Health Department for analysis and expects the results to be released this week.

He hopes the analysis will disprove claims that the detainees have been putting the maggots in the food.

"I find it absolutely preposterous that the corporation managing the detention centre would suggest that the refugees themselves are putting maggots in their own food to cause problems," he said.

"I mean, there have been examples where virtually the entire meal has had to be thrown in the bin and that's, they say, because they've been putting maggots in their own food. It's preposterous."

But they might be breeding flies?

Meanwhile, Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says she has not received any complaints about lack of hygiene at the Baxter Detention Centre.

But she doesn't eat there!

Ms Vanstone believes the centre is the best in the world and she does not know how maggots got into food being served there.
