The Australian Democrats say detainees at the Baxter detention centre in South Australia are being given high levels of psychotropic medication without adequate monitoring. They say the medication, which includes anti-depressants and anti-psychotic drugs, is being prescribed by visiting doctors who never see the patient again.
The Australian Democrats' South Australian refugee spokeswoman, Kate Reynolds, has asked for an audit of all prescriptions issued at Baxter.
"The State Government has a role to play in the provision of healthcare of detainees and in particular the State Government has a role to play in relation to the physical and mental well-being of children," she said.
Health Minister Lea Stevens's office says state medical resources are only used at Baxter when requested.
A spokesman says the Government would take any reports of overuse or misuse of psychotropic drugs very seriously but none have been received as yet.

Ombudsman launches Port Hedland riot inquiry
