Community echoes Telstra sale 'regional fears'

"They need a world class telecommunications network to make sure they can do business online and actually keep up-to-date with new development.

The Queensland Farmers Federation (QFF) says legislation governing telecommunications needs to be strengthened to ensure that bush services are maintained if Telstra is sold.

Cabinet has paved the way for the full sale of Telstra by endorsing a $3 billion regional telecommunications package.

The federation's John Cherry says it is looking to Queensland's senators to ensure regional services are protected.

"We'd hope all Queensland senators would do their job in trying to make sure that Queensland gets the telecommunications system it needs to stay world best practice competitors," he said.

"They need a world class telecommunications network to make sure they can do business online and actually keep up-to-date with new development.

"That's all they're expecting from Telstra, nothing more than what's being delivered to our competitors in other countries."
