On Human Rights Day: 20,000 homeless

The Catholic Commission for Justice, Development and Peace says the human rights of the homeless are being abused.

Today is International Human Rights Day and the commission will this morning release a document highlighting 300 cases of human rights violations in Australia.

In addition to the homeless, The Australian Human Rights Register reports on the indigenous population, disabled people and refugees.

Executive officer Marc Purcell says poverty has far-reaching consequences.

"The fact that we've still got up to 20,000 people in any one year being homeless throughout Australia is an absolute outrage. We need to do better than that," he said.

"The Government needs to lift its game and can do that because human rights are being recognised as being important by everybody."
